WARNING - Hidden Cancellation Fees
This is a warning to anyone considering taking out a policy with this company. When your child passes their test you then get charged £40 for the privilege of the policy being cancelled. I paid up front for a policy and was under the impression it would cancel when my child passed as Collingwood were aware she had passed months ago and I hadn’t tried to claim any money back for the remaining time on the policy. When I phoned up and explained what had happened the person on the phone put me on hold and when she came back asked if I had any financial issues or disabilities I would like to disclose - before telling me about this hidden clause and that they wouldn’t refund me. She was obviously expecting an angry reaction and wanted to check I wasn’t likely to have a medical episode before she broke the news to me. She wasn’t bothered when I said I was going to warn others about this scam as she’s obviously heard it all before. My advice - read the small print or even better DONT use this company.

Paid a year up front, passed after months. No refund given for the remaining months and somehow we owe them money for an admin fee?
Shocking!! Its costs enough to learn to drive and tests etc without all these hidden admin fees.

Still Getting paid for a expired policy
Congratulations on passing your test , your policy is now cancelled please pay £40 cancellation fee plus the fees for any remaining months that you obviously won’t be using , how they get away with this is beyond me , should be investigated
In response to your request for more information to trust pilot , This was your normal learner driver policy and your standard practice that once passed you immediately cancel the policy then charge the £40 cancellation charge along with fees to be paid for time remaining on the policy even though you can’t actually use it because you have now passed your test , I have had conversations with you about this where you say it is all ok as you say you make it clear when taking out the policy , regardless of if that is the case it doesn’t make it morally right where you charge people for a policy even though they can no longer use it or need it then add insult to injury by throwing in a £40 cancellation charge on top , I have had your final response and am looking at the ombudsman’s thoughts on this practice

Excessive charges. Should be reviewed by the FCA
Agreeing with all of the recent reviews.
Excessive costs and broker fees that need to be robustly investigated.
Purchased a policy for my son for just under £200 to learn to drive. Passed within 6 months. The broker charges £65 to setup the policy and £40 to cancel the policy. The insurance provider retains a minimum of 75% off the policy. So we now somehow owe £11 to cancel a policy after 6 months despite paying for a year upfront.
When challenged on the phone the advisor was rude and condescending. I would advise anyone to shop around because I the figures above are completely disproportionate, and is backed by other reviewers

£279 annual policy — just £62 refunded after 10 weeks
I purchased an annual learner driver policy for my daughter for £279. Unfortunately, after around 10 weeks she was no longer able to drive the insured car, so we needed to cancel.
I knew there was a £40 cancellation fee. What I wasn't expecting was to receive just £62 back from the £279 paid.
After querying this, Collingwood explained that £75 of the original price was a non-refundable broker arrangement fee. The insurance premium itself was £204, and because we'd entered month three, the insurer retained 50% of that premium (£102). Collingwood then deducted the additional £40 cancellation processing fee.
So after approximately 10 weeks of a 12-month policy, £217 of my £279 — almost 78% — was retained.
This is particularly important with learner driver insurance because there is a very obvious reason why customers may need to cancel an annual policy early: the learner passes their test and no longer requires learner cover.
Customers should therefore look very carefully at Collingwood's cancellation scale before buying. As the policy progresses, an increasing percentage of the annual premium is retained. The £40 cancellation processing fee is separate from this calculation.
Collingwood says these charges are disclosed before purchase. I don't recall the £75 non-refundable fee or the cancellation percentage scale being sufficiently prominent when I purchased, so I have formally asked them to show me exactly how and where these were presented during the purchase journey.
If they demonstrate that the terms were prominently displayed and I simply overlooked them, I'm happy to acknowledge that and update this review.
My advice to other parents is simply to understand the cancellation costs before purchasing an annual learner policy. Don't assume that cancelling after only a couple of months means you'll receive most of the annual price back. In our case, 10 weeks of cover resulted in a refund of only £62 from £279.

Buried cancellation clause in learner policy
Today our son passed his driving test so we cancelled his learner policy with Collingwood, which had over 4 months to run, only to be told that we actually owe them money despite paying for the policy up front and in full! Search for other similar reviews on here and you will find that there appears to be a very aggressive cancellation clause buried in the terms and conditions. So beware if you are considering this company to insure your child. You will inevitably end up paying more than you expect when they pass their test. When my wife refused to pay and asked the contact centre agent to email us how they had arrived at the outstanding balance they threatened to recover the balance from my 17 year old son directly! Clearly Collingwood must be satisfied that people will only insure their eldest child, because once you’ve experienced their sleight of hand with the cancellation you won’t return for your other children.
Edited to say that 2 weeks later this review has still not been published despite me responding to Collingwoods request for policy details. Perhaps they are suppressing many of the negative reviews?
