Perfect vehicle for our holiday needs, and extremely reliable

Service at Adalaide Parafield Gardens was outstanding, A special thanks to Vickey, onboarding great, letting me know everything, returning the vehicle was just as seamless. Brilliant.
Unfortunately the online booking customer service in New Zealand really let the team down. Unhelpful and rude.

We hired an Apollo Euro Tourer from THL for a 2 1/2 week trip around the South Island. We had an amazing time and the van was great. We did figure things out as we went around but we wished we had asked more questions about the van when we collected it. The staff did go through things but it was very brief and not really instructional. It was pretty easy to figure out though to be fair.
The van never missed a beat and was easy to drive after some settling in on the first day. About my only wish was that it didn’t have a bike rack on the back- we were never going to use it and it just obstructed our view from the lounge and bed area but otherwise loved it.
Just to let people know there is a pantry (which we were never told about) at THL where you can pick up left over foods from previous campers, this was really handy for salt and pepper and kitchen paper and cling wrap and saved us buying a load of stuff, then we just left it for the next lot of campers.

We paid $5,000 upfront for the vehicle and, given the cost of the rental, reasonably expected a high standard of vehicle preparation, handover, customer service and ongoing support. Unfortunately, a number of issues arose which fell significantly short of those expectations.
The issues we experienced are outlined below:
1. Gift card payment limitations
We were advised that gift cards could not be accepted over the phone, while the online payment system only permitted the use of one gift card. This created an unnecessary limitation and inconvenience when attempting to make payment.
2. Vehicle handover and inadequate explanation
The handover of the vehicle was inadequate. There was limited knowledge demonstrated regarding the vehicle’s operation and insufficient explanation of its features and systems. In addition, the vehicle was missing parts table and poles. Which were provided on request.
3. Driving sensors were switched off
After driving the vehicle for two full days, we discovered that the driving sensors had been switched off. This is particularly concerning given that these systems are an important safety feature and should have been checked as part of the vehicle’s preparation and handover.
4. Linen service not provided
We had paid for the linen drop-off service; however, this service was not provided as agreed. Additional linen and towels were eventually supplied, but only after we contacted the company and specifically requested them.
5. Faulty toaster and loss of electrical systems
The toaster supplied with the vehicle was faulty and caused the electrical system to trip. As a result, we lost access to the power points and the reverse-cycle heating/cooling system, neither of which was operational.
We were ultimately able to reset the electrical system ourselves. However, this should not have occurred in the first place. The toaster and electrical systems should have been checked as part of the vehicle’s pre-hire inspection before the vehicle was handed over to us.
6. Assistance helpline and lack of vehicle knowledge
When we contacted the assistance helpline, we were disappointed by the lack of knowledge and practical support provided. Despite the company having the vehicle registration details, which should have enabled identification of the vehicle’s make and model, we were repeatedly asked questions about the vehicle and its components.
For example, we were required to identify the location of items such as the fuse and isolator ourselves. This was particularly frustrating given that we were seeking assistance because of an issue with a vehicle supplied and maintained by the company.
Summary
We have been travelling for more than 20 years and have considerable experience with vehicle hire and travel. We therefore have reasonable expectations regarding the standard of service, vehicle preparation and customer support associated with a significant rental expenditure.
We paid $5,000 upfront for this vehicle and expected the level of service and support to reflect that cost. Unfortunately, the combination of the inadequate handover, missing equipment, disabled safety features, failure to provide the paid linen service, faulty equipment and inadequate assistance when problems arose resulted in a substantially below-standard experience.
We do not believe that the customer service or product provided was consistent with the price we paid.

Prompt check in, good quality vehicles

We have hired every year for last 5 years , 3 with Apollo. This year was the first time so disappointed with the motorhome we received. It had a reasonable about of damage to it. It smelt unclean and in our opinion wasn’t something we wanted to drive around in for 10 days. We raised our concerns and finally was given another. Time wasted when could have been on the road already. Taz tried to help us out and went to manager who agreed to give us another van. Greatly appreciated but the condition of that van shouldn’t have been offered in the first place. You pay enough and we were also asked if we would like to upgrade which we accepted and paid the extra to be so disappointed that my husband at that point of time said we won’t hire again from Apollo again in cairns. Our son and family had also hired one and had so much disappointment. We made our first stop to buy cleaning products and Glen 20 . We both cleaned before we slept in it that nite. Their van was far worse than ours by a mile. The dirt that came off their floor when she wiped over with wipes was like it hadn’t been cleaned at all. Just very disappointing especially for my son and family as this was their first experience in a motorhome. We kept saying we haven’t been disappointed before now. Thankfully we had a great time which clouded out a rocky start.

Good handover procedure, the van was all we needed and fitted our purpose superbly.

The experience this time wasn't the best. The motorhome had a failure that could have impacted our holiday and yes it was replaced, but people's attitude wasnt the best either on the phone or at the depot. Also, both Vans were dirty, the first had spider webs, and we found toys left in one of the beds, dirt and dust. We've always rented with Apollo but will start trying other companies.

We found staff to be courteous,clear ,informative. When we had problems,the company was available,supportive and helpful.
We can truly recommend them, and are confident to use them on future travel.

Super easy to set up, quote sent over within hour of inquiry. Shuttle to from airports, was great. Straight forward with great service for take off walk through. Fully equipped van for short or long travels. Easy drop off with very pleasant staff. Was really impressed with this company and what it offers.

The staff were friendly and helpful and the van was as described and in perfect condition.

Motorhome was clean and easy to drive. Only real downer was that the drawer holding the rubbish bin kept flying open and we had to secure it with wedges and bungee cords for the duration of our trip

Overall, our experience hiring with THL / Apollo in Auckland was smooth, seamless, and reliable.

The vehicle setup was fantastic. The provided linen and pillows were exceptional; far better quality and comfort than typical campervan bedding. The kitchen utensils and cookware were fully stocked, clean, and ready to go. Our only small practical frustration inside was that no matches or lighter were provided for the gas stove, which was a bit of an oversight for a self-contained setup.

Their pre-collection instructional videos were brilliant and made familiarising ourselves with the campervan straightforward before picking up the keys. There are plenty of payment, insurance, and convenience add-on packages available. We personally opted for independent third-party excess insurance (which is cheaper, more competitive, with broader coverage) and skipped the prepaid fuel and camping packages, as doing the final diesel top-off yourself offers far better value.

Special mention must go to the 24/7 on-call roadside assistance. We unfortunately got the van bogged on a soft roadside verge during our trip, and the dispatch team handled it brilliantly. We had a recovery vehicle on site and were safely pulled out within 30–45 minutes, with payment processed promptly over the phone without hassle.

The team across the board, including phone support, online booking, and front-desk staff, were super friendly and helpful. A brilliant initiative at the Auckland branch is the communal pantry and fridge, allowing arriving and departing travellers to share leftover pantry staples, condiments, and goods so nothing goes to waste.

Our main constructive critique was the pre-departure vehicle handover. The staff member who walked us around seemed quite new or undertrained. The interior walkthrough was very brief, the grey water valve was left in the open position, and two external storage compartment doors were left improperly latched which flew out as we drove away. Definitely do your own thorough exterior check, double and triple check each compartment, before pulling out of the yard.

Aside from that minor handover hiccup, the booking, vehicle reliability, and support were top-tier. Would happily recommend them for a New Zealand road trip!

Great service, clean vehicle, ready to go and easy sign up.

We had issues with the preparation of the vehicle. One wheel was down to 25 psi on handover, two latches were not working (kitchen hatch, roof latch), no tools to fix a couple of issues, the hose on gas bottle was only finger tight and nothing to secure if needing to Changeover. We bought some tools. Chairs were in poor condition and 1 broke on day 2.Not enough warm bedding, just as well we had extra.
The vehicle itself worked well, apart from being very noisy, bed and kitchen were fine.

Campervan was not good, I couldn’t get the table down to make up bed had to sleep on skinny seat/bench

Will not hire of this company again
Feel I deserve a refund as couldn’t sleep on bed this is one of the reasons I hired a campervan.

The motahome is great to go and do your holidays your way at your time. Has everything you need. The customer service was fabulous told you how things work where things are.
