If you do not want to continue their service, you must notify them strictly within the period they specify. Otherwise, they may treat your silence as consent and issue invoices for a new multi-year contract.
In our case, we clearly informed them before the contract expiry that we did not want to renew. Despite this, we were later issued invoices assuming a further three-year contract, without our agreement.
This experience was stressful and disappointing. Make sure you fully understand their renewal and notice terms, and keep everything in writing.

We had an excellent experience working with Matt Best from Peninsula. Matt provided outstanding support in helping us develop and refine our Health & Safety Hand Book and Action Plan. He worked closely with us to organise and customise the manuals so they truly fit the structure and operational needs of our business, rather than using a generic template.

Automatic renewal major issues
Peninsula tried to lock me into another 5-year term using an automatic renewal clause. After talks with them failed, I sought formal legal advice, which confirmed the renewal notice they relied on was insufficient and I could take the matter to the Disputes Tribunal. Filing was simple and inexpensive (around $90).
Initially, Peninsula ignored the proceedings, insisting their contract and notice were sufficient. As the hearing approached, they offered a full refund plus my legal fees, but attached a broad gag. I refused. The day before the hearing, they relented: paying back three unauthorised direct debits, reimbursing my $700 legal fees, terminating the contract, waiving the early termination fee, and imposing no gag.
I had agreed to remain silent if they fixed the renewal notice to make its purpose clear - they refused.
Outcome: I was made whole financially, the contract ended, no fees were applied, and I am free to speak honestly about my experience. It is my understanding that the limit for filing Tribunal complaints is 6 years from the incident - know your rights.
Oh, also, they record calls but refuse to supply you with copies of these even though I believe the Privacy Act requires it. I have complained to the privacy commissioner and commerce commission. Potentially you want to ask how long they keep these records and perhaps you choose to record the calls too - when I tried to do that the representative immediately hung up the phone.
Regarding response below. Peninsula did not engage constructively before tribunal date neared and even then initially insisted on unreasonable terms only giving up in the days before the hearing. They pursued payments and said non payment may impact my credit score.

Unfortunately, we have undertaken a review of the services provided to you and note that no request for termination was received prior to its renewal.
Regarding call recordings, we only record calls for training and service quality purposes. We advise prospects that the call is being recorded at the beginning of the call, they have the option to request for the call to not be recorded, and we delete the call after we have spoken to the prospect.
At Peninsula, we genuinely strive to work collaboratively with all our clients. As reflected in your review, we worked closely with you to reach an amicable and fair outcome that recognised your specific concerns and the changes within your business. We’ve just completed our second yearly Health and Safety Review with Peninsula, and once again we were lucky enough to have Kathleen Fergusson as our consultant. Having her return for our second year has been incredibly valuable — the continuity makes a huge difference, especially for a small business like ours. Kathleen went out of her way to make sure she could be the one to conduct the audit, and that level of consistency really helps build rapport, reassurance, and a proper understanding of how our business operates.
Kathleen is extremely knowledgeable and, just like last year, I came away feeling genuinely inspired. December is a chaotic time for us, but she still managed to work around our workload and fit in what we needed without adding pressure. That flexibility is something we truly appreciate.
