Don’t rely on Charge Scotland stations and app if travelling to Scotland. They are hit or miss.
I’ve just travelled from Surrey to Edinburgh, Grantown on Spey, Skye (Bradfoard, Portree, UIG), Invergarry, Inverness, Culloden and Milnathort. I’ve got to say the Charge Scotland network and app is appalling. Over half the stations I tried to operate didn’t work and had trouble with the app on most of those that did work. I ended up using electroverse app as the only reliable way to operate them. Best using Gridserve in Inverness or BP pulse if you are travelling to the North of Scotland.
Convenient Charging, but Watch Out for Payment Hiccups
As a new EV driver, I found ChargePlace Scotland’s stations pretty convenient in principle. It’s straightforward when everything works—you can just use a bank card, no need for a special app or RFID card. Plus, apps like Zap-Map help you find which stations are actually up and running.
However, there’s a serious downside I’ve run into. If the machine glitches and the session fails, it still takes the initial £35 hold from your account. You might have to try again and get charged again, and waiting days for refunds is really frustrating. I had to pay multiple times in one instance before it actually worked, and getting the money back was a hassle.
In short, when the stations work, they’re great. But if there’s a problem, be prepared for some payment headaches. Hopefully, they can fix that refund process soon.
Unauthorised payment taken from my…
Unauthorised payment taken from my account for a never asked for RFID card, on an account which has never been used. This was never requested and reported to my bank. Chargeplace Scotland do not reply to emails and do not give customers the ability to delete their own personal details, payment information or account.
Absolute joke
One charge port not working and not been working for over 3 wks. Only way to find this out is to phone helpline
Have new hybrid plug in and tried to use webpay on charge Scotland..... After 4 failures phoned to be told the connection I was on was not working..... Display on machine did not say this
No instructions on machine or on screen as you use it.
Had to phone again and guy tried to talk me through how to get onto webpay site that I had already used !!!! AGH!!!
Moved car onto totally different machine and got connected etc ..
Also tried me to get RFID card at £12 to use charge Scotland and pay £30 up front onto card.. So £42 quid to use the cheap electric charger...
ABSOLUTE JOJE & £12 TO GET A CARD IS A TOTAL RIP OFF... NO WONDER THEY ARE BRING FAZED OUT....AND Transferred TO OTHER COMPANY'S
CANNOT BELIEVE HOW BAD ELECTRIC CAR CHARGIBG SYSTEMS ARE TO USE. DIFFERENT COMPANY'S USE DIFFERENT SYSTEMS TO ALLOW YOU TO USE THEIR MACHINES.
Awful Service
App is terrible, and when eventually got charger to work found that 3 x £35 preauthorisation had been taken from my account. I spent £2.03 on electricity but still have nearly £105 out of my account for 3 days now. Going to Lidl next time
Disgusting EV charging Network
Disgusting EV charging Network. Stay well clear of these chargers if your visiting the Scottish Islands especially if you’re up John Ogroats are doing the NC 500 these chargers will just have you running around mental trying to find one that works taking £75 off you every time you need to charge 90% of the charges don’t work takes more than 7 days to get you £75 back you ring up and even the staff have not got a clue what’s going on with the chargers so if they’ve not got a clue what’s going on with the EV charges what chance does it give us visiting. GUYS Stay well away from the CHARGE PLACE SCOTLAND EV network its a disgusting service and very much spoilt our holiday.
How is this possible
How is this possible! A big name vo.pany like this one can't get anything to work properly when private companies can .
I have been trying to use this app for years to charge my car and i have tried multiple chargers and never works!.. i tell you what works...the 35£ fee they take , the 10£ for a card and all other fees for a crap service...that works no problem....
Kept my money for over 7 days and still have to phone them
I was using the EV charger by the Park and Ride at hermistion gate, Edinburgh. They charged my card (hold) £45 for the past 8 days, phoned my bank and was advised to phone this company as they still not released the money. Phoned charge place CS to be told I have to wait until 7 working days past for them to release the money back. I guess I will never use this cowpany again even if it's free.
I sold me EV because of these jokers.
I bought an EV thinking there was a great network of chargers throughout Scotland. Don’t get me wrong, they have lots of chargers, but my experience is very few work. Fortunately I charge at home and never ended up being stranded but twice went we’re on a road trip and wanted to go further so used their app to find the nearest working charger only to arrive and find it out of service so had to head home. Both times I called them and they couldn’t have cared less. They just said the app hadn’t been updated to show it was broken. I would keep checking hours later and the app still showed it was working when they knew fine it wasn’t. Don’t rely on these cowboys to meet your EV needs. If you do find a working one your in the lucky few. I wish I read the reviews here and on App Store before trusting this company to be in any way reliable.
Nothing works
Nothing works, there is a £75 fee to start the charge, it doesn't recognise when you've finished the (very expensive) charge and don't get me started on the app. It's everything wrong with owning an electric vehicle.
Seriously, sort you shiz out, you're an embarrassment. If you need to get round Scotland using these chargers, you're going nowhere.
Pretty woeful
Have used on several occasions and has not run smoothly yet. Firstly they take a significant pre-authorisation amount which is gone from your account for several days after charging. There is no reason they should have to do that any more. The amount that you are charged per session seems very inconsistent and is not transparent, and the app is woeful. To be fair, customer service has been quite good in the past, however I have just been questioning a charging fee with them and they have no record of it on their system, and there is no record on the app, so they have just stopped communicating. The only record of it seems to be on my bank account!!!! Plan to avoid. They will be an absolute last resort for me from now on.
Takes £35 from card for each charge…
Takes £35 from card for each charge attempt. After repeated failed charges due to faulty equipment, this is amounts to >£100 which has yet to be returned to my bank account after several days.
Arrived to charge my car
Arrived to charge my car, wouldn’t work. Called them and they said my account was too new, and their charger was too old so there was nothing they could do. I also ordered my charging card in March, input all my payment details obviously expecting payment to be taken immediately or at least within 30 days, but instead it was taken 4 months later “due to numerous administrative changes”. Is that even allowed? Who knows.. maybe they’ll process my other payments 3 years down the line.
Prepayment nonsense
Staff were good over the phone helping me get my charger to start charging my car. But they took a £75 prepayment off my bank and then charged me again for the kw usage. Im still waiting for my 75 quid to be available to me 5 days later. They blame the bank but thats nonsense. Lidl take a £40 prepayment and then take the value of power used and the remaining money is back in your bank within minutes. Will never use Charge Scotland again for that single reason.
So so bad
Before I launch - there are extremely nice people on the other end of the phones through all of this. But as nice as they were they didn’t help. This is the most appalling experience I have had with car charging. I have been in an electric car since 2014. I have driven across Europe, the US, all over UK - and then to I had the pisspoor idea of driving the highlands of Scotland. There’s chargers everywhere! What could go wrong. Mistake!!! I tried nine of these piece of shit chargers from Harris through caithness and none work. They are the only game in town. And the chargers are absolutely in appalling condition. One of the chargers they claimed had worked that morning was covered in cobwebs. All were beaten to shit and never managed to get one to work. So you are screwed driving an ev in the north of Scotland. Terrible for tourism. They are so bad it makes me wonder whether this is a Machiavellian trick by big oil to turn consumers off EVs in an oil revenue dependent country
NC500, good experience
Just back from driving NC500 & round Orkney, over 800mikes & used all CPS chargers with Electroverse RFID card. No issues with charging, there was always availability with no waiting and never any concerns regarding range between chargers. Overall very pleasantly surprised, well done ChargePlace Scotland 👍
Dreadful service
Dreadful service, in Coatbridge there are 6 chargers within a ten minute walk of my home, not a single one of them functions. One neighbour states that the one in the carpark at their home has had a fault for over two years!
There's a nearby hub of them at the Time Capsule which has around 8 points spread across 4 machines, one of them, by its own admission, doesn't work and has never worked, 5 of the remaining 7 don't work and the remaining 2 only work during a full moon, if you're facing North, North East and burn a sprig of Lavendar before logging into their app. Then there's the App - this may seem trivial, but when the points on the charger are labelled "A" and "B", why are their corresponding entries in the app labelled "1" and "2"? These terms aren't interchangeable. Unless you're directly underneath a 5G mast, no signal strength known to man will allow this app sufficient bandwidth to do anything except provide the loading function whilst processing payment. On the occasions that it does work, I'd expect to have the hold fund of £35 taken on more than one occasion, and I'd expect to wait a week for this to be returned to your account. The displays, if they even exist, on the chargers, say helpful things such as "Charger available" and "disconnect plug" on a display that hasn't been used since we landed men on the moon. Overall, just grim, and not recommended for anyone who would like to charge their car without overwhelming frustration.
Can't give 0 stars
Can't give 0 stars. No even worth 1 star. How this company are still operating is beyond me.
At they hold your money and blame your bank. £120 and up to 5 days wait. Get a grip.
AVOID USING THEIR CHARGERS
This is one of the worst apps nd…
This is one of the worst apps nd companies I have ever used. Nothing works. Even with registration the system freezes. Numerous times I have tried charging the charger doesn't work despite lengthy calls to the help centre. Today in Stromness I had to register. They asked me to put £75 on my account to begin charging and I once again got frozen doing this. Moreover I'm sure i have credit in my account going back a few years but there is no sign if this. The sooner a more competent company takes over the better.
Using ChargePlace Scotland shouldn’t be this difficult - but it always is.
From the moment you try to log into the app, things start going wrong. There’s no clear feedback if login fails, and confirmation codes often never arrive. When you do finally get access, you’re met with a clunky interface that gives you little reassurance about what’s happening.
Start a charge and £75 is instantly blocked from your account - only for the app to respond with a vague “an error occurred.” You’re left stranded, confused, and forced to phone in.
The real frustration isn’t just the broken tech - it’s the indifference you meet when seeking help. While most phone staff are helpful and knowledgeable, you’re often greeted first by a cold, dismissive tone or unhelpful diversions like being told to read the privacy policy.
The bigger issue is structural: councils may own the chargers, but ChargePlace Scotland controls the network - and the whole thing feels built on the cheap. The interface lacks even basic user feedback, the system provides little transparency, and the entire experience erodes trust.
Fixing the UX and UI should be the first priority. Better real-time feedback, clearer error messages, and more transparency around payments would go a long way. Right now, it feels like the system was designed to meet minimum requirements - not real human needs.
