A wonderful trip to Greece but underhanded tactics are everywhere…

A wonderful trip to Greece for a wedding, ruined by what is feeling like an attempted scam attempt on car drop off.

On Thursday 5 June we picked up a 7 seater Dacia Jogger.

The check-out desk is within the airport, just outside departures. There is then a shuttle (2 minute journey) that takes you to the car. The shuttle for us arrived promptly; no issues so far.

On checking out the car, it was provided with just under half a tank of fuel, and a crack 4-5 cm long coming up from the bottom of the windscreen. We noted this to the agent, who was taking a full set of photos and videos.

So far all good, and the windscreen crack was discussed and we were told noted on the iPad. We watched the agent take photos + videos etc.

This is a great process as it protects both parties.

It must be noted that this type of crack in a windscreen in the UK would fail a MOT (Roadworthiness assessment). We assumed this must simply be a nuance of Greece that this is acceptable.

The car performed well for the duration of the trip.

On returning the vehicle, the agent who identified himself a John begun to inspect the car thoroughly. John remarked upon the crack in the windscreen and that this was our damage.

We said it was like that when we got it and we were not worried; he could simply consult the photos and video the checkout agent made.

He spent a long time with another agent in the office going through photos. This period of time seemed to be ongoing with circular discussion in Greek which we did not understand.

Bear in mind, at this point, we are waiting to leave to catch a flight, and we have a 2 month old waiting in the van with his mother.

During this process, it felt like the agents, noting our situation, are making us wait to see if we will simply accept whatever they dictate.

When I asked them for an update, they asked if I had photos. Why would I need photos if you have a video and photos check out process? Again I tell them to look at their own photos…

Following another prompt for an update, the conversation begun to escalate after I pointed out that “if Avance did not provide cars with cracked windscreens, then this situation would be avoided”. This resulted an a rather aggressive response from the agent in the office who stated if he gave brand new cars, they would still come back damaged...

After some more time, they told us verbally that we would not be charged and asked us to sign an iPad. The iPad was zoomed in and we could not see what was signed. We were not given any paper receipt nor have any emails of checkout been received.

It must also be noted, that this type of damage is not caused from driving into something or not caring sufficiently when looking after the car. The crack is on the lower edge of the windscreen, and will continue to grow. If we had caused it, for example by a rock hitting the windscreen during driving, there would be an impact nuclei.

Most importantly, allow me to restate, the crack was there on checkout, and the checkout agent was informed, agreed, and appeared to note it on their iPad.

I fear for the next client of Avance to use this vehicle.

At this point we are fully expecting to need to challenge this with our card issuer.

I do not know whether Avance is a franchise, but if it is, I would encourage head office to inspect this office, and ensure the office is following the process dictated by the franchise.

We chose a more expensive franchise, paying nearly £400 for a 7 seater for 5 days, with the intention of avoiding cowboys and scammers, and companies who have to cheat to succeed.

TLDR: Avance rented a 7 seater with a cracked windscreen on checkout. It remains to be seen whether the card hold will be released.

This review will be updated when an outcome is finalised. It has not been a pleasant experience.

I am writing this review to warn other travelers about an extremely negative rental experience with AVANCE Car Rental at their Kefalonia, Greece branch.
I was outrageously charged €2000 for a "scratch" on the bumper. I must emphasize that this was such a minor scratch that it was virtually impossible to see with the naked eye and even in the photographs taken at the location – it was only visible under significant magnification.
I am convinced that the scratch was already present before I received the car. The fact that it was not visible from the outset strongly supports this claim.
Furthermore, the car return process was unnecessarily long and tedious. The company representative delayed me for approximately 40 minutes, which almost caused me to miss my flight.
I consider this behavior to be a clear demonstration of bad faith and an attempt to extort money from customers. I strongly recommend avoiding this car rental company and choosing an alternative.

We would like to clarify that AVANCE Car Rental does not impose arbitrary charges under any circumstances. Our stations operate strictly under the internationally recognized D.A.T damage assessment system, which ensures transparent, standardized, and fair evaluation of all vehicle damages.
With respect to the charge referenced, we wish to clarify that it is not procedurally or operationally feasible for a fee of 2000€ to be levied for a minor surface scratch, as described in your review. Any such charge would only be applied in cases involving substantial damage, and only following a comprehensive assessment conducted in accordance with the D.A.T. system. All findings are thoroughly documented, and a detailed damage report is available to the customer upon request.
We regret any delays during the vehicle return process and understand the importance of a smooth and timely experience, especially when heading to a flight. This is not the standard of service we strive to provide, and we will be looking into this matter further with the local team.

Uralt Fahrzeug mit 120000 km und Mängeln

Wir erhielten in Heraklion einen uralten Fiat 500x mit 120000 km. Als in Chania die Kontrolleuchten " Motor kontrollieren lassen " aufleuchteten, verweigerte man uns dort den Tausch des Fahrzeuges. Wir mussten 140 km zurück nach Heraklion fahren, um auf einen Fahrzeugtausch zu bestehen. Dabei wollte man uns noch Kratzer am Spoiler des Uraltfahrzeuges in Rechnung stellen. Wir sollten einfach weiter fahren und die Kontrolleuchten mißachten.
Als wir auf einen Fahrzeugwechsel bestanden, bekamen wir einen Peugeot 301, ein Modell dessen Bau im Jahr 2009 eingestellt wurde.
Finger weg, es gibt genug Alternativen.

On April 26, 2025, you received a Fiat 500X, which was in the DX category as per your selection. The vehicle had undergone a thorough inspection and was found to be in excellent mechanical and functional condition.
On May 2, 2025, six days after receiving the vehicle, you informed the station that the orange engine warning light had illuminated. Following your report, the station conducted an assessment by asking the necessary questions and reassuring you that the vehicle was functioning properly and showing no signs of malfunction. As explained, the warning light may have been triggered due to poor fuel quality or a minor piece of debris detected by the sensor. In such cases, the warning light typically resets after refueling or when the debris is cleared.
It is important to note that modern vehicles, being heavily electronic, are highly sensitive. Even the smallest debris can cause the warning light to activate temporarily. At the time of the incident, you were in Chania, and you mentioned your intention to visit the Chania station for a vehicle replacement, as you preferred not to drive with the warning light on. You were informed that, unfortunately, the Chania station, being a partner location, does not have the authority to provide a replacement vehicle.
As per our policies, since the vehicle was fully operational, we requested that you needed to return to the station, in order to provide you with a replacement vehicle, according to your request. The station performed a free category upgrade and provided you with a Peugeot 301, model 2021, as we always take our customers' preferences and comments seriously and always strive for the best service. You kept the new vehicle for another 6 days.
According to all of the above, unfortunately we do not understand your comments and we sincerely regret any dissatisfaction you expressed.

Great friendly service

We hired a car with these guys in Kefalonia. Very affordable prices, super friendly service and the car was in great condition. Absolutely no problems whatsoever, would definitely use them again and would also recommend.

You sent a correspondence stating that the vehicle was dirty, but also that the tire pressure, in your opinion, was not correct. Always taking our customers' comments seriously, we checked what you reported and forwarded you the corresponding photos of the vehicle that were taken during the delivery of the vehicle in your presence, at Athens Airport. The vehicle was not found to be dirty, according to the photos, but also according to the photo of the dashboard, the tire indicator was not on, as they explained to you in writing, new generation vehicles have electronic systems, where in case of lack of air in the tires or in general if a problem with the tires is detected, the tire indicator on the vehicle's dashboard immediately lights up. You had the vehicle at your disposal for 4 days without expressing any issue upon delivery of the vehicle, nor during the duration of your rental, as in any case the station would try to do the necessary, in order to do its best to satisfy you. We sincerely regret that our response did not meet your requirements, but we felt that we had to explain our position to you and clarify the issues you mentioned, according to the photos that were available.
Thank you for giving us the opportunity to explain our position to you once again and we hope that no bitterness towards our company will remain, so that we can serve you again in the future and fully meet your requirements.

Thessaloniki airport rent

Rented a car from Thessaloniki airport, we arrived and left outside of businesshours. They always called us infront and checked if everything is in schedule. Communication and paperwork was quick, smooth and clear. Very polite and professional personel. On our second day car had electrical failure and they quickly found us replacement car. Both cars were nice and clean. On our leavingnight gentleman on the dropoff desk drove us to the airport door with our luggage, definately a nice touch! Very good and friendly experience overall. Safety concern

This company encourages customers to use their Avance Online Check – In which they say is "extremely easy to use". We tried it and spent approx 50 minutes trying to upload image files of our passports and driving licences. There is no guidance regarding the types and sizes of image files accepted. We eventually worked out that they have to be very small pdf's. Eventually we managed to upload the files and then their system threw up a "System error" which their employee who tried to help us online said she could not resolve.
So we arrived at Kalamata airport without having checked in with Avance. They have no office there, so everything had to be done via phones and tablets in the car park. To be fair, their employee who met us did his best. Make sure you have access to your emails on your phone ! We could not read on a small screen the small print on the contract they emailed us. The car had multiple dents and scatches all round which took us a long time to photograph and video. On the last day of our 3 week booking, one of the wheel trims (hub caps) fell off while driving on a mountain road and disappeared down the mountain. On inspection, we noticed that the wheel from which the trim had fallen was dented. On checking the video we had taken when collecting the car, we saw that this dent was visible. The same day, I called the Avance office in Kalamata to notify them that this had happened. Their response was that because we had "lost" the trim, we had to pay for 4 new wheel trims. I tried to explain that I believed that the trim had fallen off because it had been fitted on to a damaged wheel. They refused to discuss this and kept repeating aggressively "You lost it, you pay!". Next day at the airport, we paid for a replacement wheel trim rather than miss our flight through trying to discuss the problem further. They even charged us a further 6 Euros "labour" to fit a new trim onto a damaged wheel. In my view, their refusal to discuss a damaged wheel, which is a potential safety issue, is disgraceful. Avoid.

To begin with, we would like to inform you that our customers use Online checkin, without encountering any problem or having informed us of any difficulty, until now, where you mention it to us.
Our vehicles are always thoroughly checked before delivery to each customer, but also upon their return. Under no circumstances would we deliver a vehicle with any functional or mechanical problem known to us.
On your delivery on 24/9/2024 the vehicle was inspected in your presence, and you signed the corresponding damage document. The vehicle had all 4 tire covers, without any problem. On your return on 15/10/2024 you were informed of the cost of the missing tire cover. There was no tire issue as there was no problem with any of the vehicle's tires or wheels. Our company under no circumstances arbitrarily invoices any damage, as each damage is invoiced according to the global DAT system, as stated in your contract in field 12. The total cost requested by the station and paid by you was 38,17€ ( 24,53€ tire cover + 6€ labor + VAT).
It is not possible for our company to bear any damage that may occur in the rental of each customer.

Received a very dirty car, inside and out, later had problems with the tires were without profile and 1 tire had lost air. Car was returned, no one present, very unpleasant experience, Hertz was also in the parking lot and looked very professional, next rental = Hertz

Avance Thessaloniki - great service

We recently hired a car from Avance at Thessaloniki airport. All the staff we dealt with were lovely. The car was as expected and the process was very smooth. We have our own excess insurance policy so we always dread the inevitable hard sell to take the car company full insurance but this didn’t happen which was a relief. Thanks guys- we’ll definitely see you again.

Do not use this company

Do not use this company. Worst company we have ever dealt with. We hired a car, paid a fair price for the car, and then they tried to give us an old car with over 100,000 km on it, telling us that it was an upgrade! Of course we refuse the car and then had a continuous argument with the service desk for over an hour to try and sort something out. We even offered to pay more so that we can get a better car, only to be told that they had no more cars. We ended up cancelling the car and booking with a different provider in which we were very happy with.

The Gentlemen, we spoke to at the Desk, did not offer any solution, didn’t even try to help us, and pretty much said we could take it or leave it, He was rude and arrogant. It was a terrible experience, in which not only cost us money, Increase our anxiety and stress levels to an extreme, but also cost us valuable time out of our holiday, trying to sort out this debacle, before we could continue on our holiday. We ended up being stuck at Athens airport for over three hours longer than we should’ve been.

If there was an option to rate them less than 1, I would use it. Their service was Disgraceful and not worthy of any review other than a negative review. Rate them as -1…

Save yourself a headache, Money, and valuable holiday time by avoiding this company at all costs.

Avoid this company at all costs

Avoid this company at all costs. Booked a car from Athens airport and the staff were rude and arrogant. They tried to give us an older model car that had over 100,000kms on it and in poor condition. When we asked for another car they said it was the only car they had left and if we didn’t want it, that it was our problem.
We then had to argue with the staff at the counter for over an hour to get a refund.
The staff at the airport counter were very unhelpful, rude and arrogant.

On 24/9 you made a reservation for Athens airport for GM category, through a partner website.
The station had carried out a free upgrade and on your delivery on 24/9 you were delivered a G2 category.
Upon your pick up at the station you were unhappy with the vehicle and refused to pick it up as it did not have CarPlay as you wanted. The colleagues at the station explained to you that additional vehicle benefits are not confirmed. We would like to inform you that only the category of the vehicle is confirmed and not additional features of the vehicle (e.g. CarPlay, parking sensors, usb etc.). All our vehicles are always thoroughly inspected before each delivery to each customer, but also upon their return. The vehicle had no problems.
In the end you chose not to pick up the vehicle as it did not have the extra benefit you wanted, and the station returned the money you had paid.

Contratamos un seguro a todo riesgo con seguro de franquicia y la sorpresa fue que la que te ofrecen online es para que en caso de colisión la reclames, ósea, externa. Igualmente en la oficina de recogida de retienen la franquicia en targeta. Supuestamente era de 700 y cobraron 868, al no entendernos mucho con el ingles no pedimos mas explicaciones. Ojo con esto. Recogimos el coche a las 4 de la madrugada, nos dieron un hibrido que en la primera parada a tomar café no arrancaba, nos dieron un tel. de emergencias- asistencia 24 h. y saltaba un contestador, gracias a unos policías de Santorini pudimos empujarlo y volver a la oficina. En la devolución, en la gasolinera que esta al lado de la oficina pusimos 20€ para devolverlo como lo habíamos recogido pero el surtidor no funcionaba y fuimos a la oficina con el tiket de pago. Volvimos a a la gasolinera con un empleado y verifico que no suministraba. Se quedaron el tiket de 20€ y entendimos que lo reclamarían ellos por la mañana. Aun así nos pidieron 10€ mas, como teníamos prisa para coger el vuelo de vuelta se lo dimos. Hay que aclarar que el coche era hibrido y los 20€ que poníamos al principio sobrepasaba la mitad del deposito que es la medida con la que te dan el vehiculo. Si han reclamado ellos el tiket de la gasolinera ¿Porque no lo han devuelto con la franquicia? La poca información que nos dieron sobre esos 168€ de mas en una franquicia de 700€ cuando contratamos un seguro para la misma y por saber que paso con la reclamación de la gasolinera. Muchas preguntas sin contestación.
En la respuesta de Avance:
Primero: No mencionan que tuvimos que devolver el primer vehiculo a las 3 h. de la entrega por fallo en la bateria y no responder a las llamadas de emergencia 24h.
Segundo: No son transparentes a la hora de contratar seguro de franquicia, si lo haces por web externa de otro proveedor tienen que explicar desde el primer momento que no es un seguro directo con Avance y si de reclamación del cliente con otra aseguradora.
Tercero: La franquicia era de 700€ y no explican porque se retuvieron en targeta 868€.
Cuarto: SI nos pidieron 10€ mas, supuestamente para compensar la gasolina gastada y nadie nos ha dado explicación de que paso con la reclamación de los 20€ del tiket que les entregamos por el fallo del surtidor.

You made a reservation on 3/8 through a partner website. On 15/9, 03:10 in the morning, you received from our Santorini office a new Fiat Panda, model 2024.
To begin with, we would like to inform you that in case that you have chosen additional insurance from the respective website, it clearly states on the website that the agreement is between you and the website and that upon delivery of the vehicle, you must have a credit card with you for the vehicle guarantee to be pre-authorized by the supplier. In case of an accident, you receive the documents from the supplier and then the company-website, from where you made the reservation, compensates you.
Reading or not reading the terms of each website is at the discretion of each customer.
When receiving the vehicle on 15/9, the colleague showed you the vehicle, but also marked the vehicle in your presence for any damages, where you also signed the corresponding document. Hybrid vehicles are quiet when starting the engine and it says on the dial that it is ready to go. We understand that it was probably not understandable. In any case, for any question during the delivery of the vehicle the colleague could help you as long as he showed you the vehicle, but you did not express any question. The vehicle is not experiencing any problems.
You have owned the vehicle for 7 days. On your return on 22/9/2024, 01:45 the vehicle was checked again for any damage and you left. No employee ever received 10€, as you mention. Santorini station is not open 24 hours. On 15/9, during your delivery you paid 50€ for the 2 out-of-hours services (delivery: 03:10 and collection: 01:45), which you knew from the beginning when making your reservation from the website, as it is mentioned also on the voucher.
Accordingly, according to all the above, we do not understand your negative review.

Réservation simple

Réservation simple, pas trop cher pour 7j a l’aeroport d’Athènes.
Attention à bien avoir le montant de la caution sur votre compte car elle est débité.
Nous avions pris un siège enfant en option, pas de grande qualité mais il suffisait.

Rent in Athens

Rent in Athens. We received an excellent car, a higher level than we ordered. Clean, excellent mechanical condition. Excellent and very fast service both in receiving and returning. We forgot personal items in the car - they did everything for us to receive them at home. Highly recommend
