Il Marchesato is a family Company founded in 1978 in Saluzzo, a tiny town in the North West of Italy, not far from Turin.
The name is after the old name of the area, and it means “The land of the Marquis”, a common way in the ancient times to define places according to the nobles in charge. From the beginning Il Marchesato makes hand made luxury umbreallas, walking sticks and shoehorns with a vast array of high quality materials.
Every single piece is mounted by hand, precious textiles cut by hand, sticks and handles are worked by the family members and porcelain handles painted by local artists working with the Company since longtime. Even the top notches and runners of the umbrellas are mounted and tested internally one by one.

The umbrella is beautiful. I was however surprised that I was charged an additional $80+ fee for transport/shipping into the US. I thought all shipping was included in my quoted original price.

We would however like to clarify the point regarding the $80+ charge mentioned in your review. This amount was not related to shipping. The transportation from our workshop in Italy to the United States was fully covered by us.
The amount requested by DHL refers to import duties and taxes applied by the United States government on goods entering the country. As indicated in the payment receipt issued by DHL, these are customs duties, collected by the courier on behalf of U.S. customs authorities.
This information is clearly stated in our Delivery Rates Policy and is also specified during the checkout process, where it is explained that international orders may be subject to local import duties and taxes depending on the destination country.
While these charges may not be pleasant, they are government-imposed taxes and therefore completely outside of our control, which means they cannot be included in the product price.

I truly can't give a review personally
I truly can't give a review personally, but after reading the bad reviews I regretfully am going to pass on purchasing your product due to unhappy customers.
I just don't want to be that person that orders an umbrella and then when it arrives I'm not happy with it and not being able to get a full refund instead of a gift certificate.

We would also like to correct an important misunderstanding mentioned in your comment. We do not replace refunds with gift certificates. When a return is eligible under our policies and international consumer regulations, the refund is issued directly to the original payment method.
The only items that cannot be refunded are gift cards and personalized items, which is a standard international policy clearly stated in our terms and commonly applied in e-commerce.

Disappointment
The level of flexibility, humanity, and reasonableness was far from what could be considered a good customer experience. There is a clear disconnect between the company’s projected image and the reality of dealing with them.
Add: after the death of a person who explicitly wished to have your umbrella, I really don t want to possess or use any of your products. I belive that anyone can understand this.
In light of this, I am formally requesting a refund. I would like to clearly state that internal company policies cannot override or limit rights granted under EU consumer protection legislation. As this purchase was made online, it falls under the EU right of withdrawal, which provides a 14-day period for cancellation and refund. But you have your rules and I have really bad costumer experience, and 200 eur trapped in a useless gift voucher.
Add:I understand your response as an extensive justification of your position; however, the customer experience has already been formed. You requested feedback, you have received it.
Your reliance on Directive 2011/83/EU represents a unilateral interpretation, as in my assessment not all statutory conditions required to exclude the right of withdrawal were fulfilled in this case.
I suggest that we continue this communication via private email.

The non-refundability is not a discretionary decision applied to a single case, but a general rule also linked to technical reasons: once issued, the gift card is generated as digital credit, and our system does not provide any option to cancel or refund it.
We would also like to point out that the gift card has no expiration date and can therefore be used at any time in the future, without any time limitation.
In addition, we would like to highlight that under EU Directive 2011/83, digital vouchers fall under exceptions to the right of withdrawal. Therefore, refunds are not applicable to this type of purchase.
