Tried Filen because I was looking for zero-knowledge cloud storage for small personal backups.

It's easy to use, and the Windows app lets me automatically sync a folder with cloud when any changes are detected, or drag and drop files into an network drive.

It's convenient that the app can start minimized and sit unobtrusively in the tray so you can have sync available in the background.

The 10 GB free tier is honestly more than enough for my needs though if I ever wanted more their prices seem very competitive compared to alternatives like Proton.

Sicher, preiswert, guter Kundendienst, transparent, gute Funktionalität

Total zufrieden. 10 GB kostenloser Speicher.

Hab mir sehr wichtige Daten gesichert.

Und ich kann vollkommen in Ruhe arbeiten, ohne irgendwelche störenden Pop Up Fenster.

Pro:
- Good upload and download speed.
- UI of the desktop application is the same as the website.
- Clear UI.
- Versioning: 100 versions with no timeframe.
(This is not mentioned on the website. This information is from a customer service agent.)
- End-to-end encryption according to website.
- Data storage in Germany.
- Customer service replies fast and with a clear answer.

Con:
- The most important aspect of cloud storage is the restoration of data. Filen can only restore files one by one. Restoration of folders and complete partitions is not possible. Hence, Filen can't restore your data in case your folders or partitions are encrypted/locked by ransomware, and this encrypted/locked data is backed up to Filen.
Hence, Filen is just nice to store your data online, but no safe solution in case of a ransomware attack.

My recommendation:
Subscribe to a cloud storage service that can restore folders and partitions, such as pCloud and kDrive (from Infomaniak).
Most cloud storage services can't back up/sync virtual cloud drives and external physical drives.
pCloud and kDrive can back up and sync virtual cloud drives and external physical drives.

i am not the person to write reviews usually, i have been using filen since an year or so. i have tried every other cloud storage providers and i have tested them. filen is the only one that i truly belive is best of all. gives 50 gb free through various methods like inviting others and stuff then the pricing for more storage seems right, Good upload and download speeds, built in file viewer for videos,text,etc and it has built in code editor. very intuitive UI i like it and i will pay for it

My goal was to use Filen as a backup solution for my NAS. I'm not so tech-savvy and it was difficult to follow the instructions to install Filen on my NAS.
Tech support calmly helped be step-by-step.

On top, the whole Filen system is exactly what I needed and the price is competitive!

Really good and simple but I was a little disappointed to see the price hikes on Black Friday 2025 compared to other years. Of course it's understandable and I do understand that they might have too many people purchasing the same life time subscription.

But it's still very good. Has pretty much everything you'd need.

I'm a paid up member of Filen. It's far too slow for my needs. Downloading a 45GB file from my drive takes all day on a 1GB connection. I've done this with several large files with the same results.
Service is throttled to about 500KB/s. Not acceptable in 2025 for a Cloud service and not for a Premium member.. I'll be looking elsewhere.

I've been using Filen for over a year now, and I've been pleasantly surprised all the way through!

Their apps are all really well done, and the prices are fair, couldn't be happier!

They also have a Linux client, which is already one step above Google Drive, where I was cursed to use their shit Web Interface!

I'm basing my score on a service that is cheap, very cheap! Good reliable service that has good two factor security. Only real issue is downloading large files from my account. 25GB file throttled to 1.5 mbps.
So if you don't mind throttled downloads, you'll like the service, very good value for money.

Bin sehr zufrieden mit filen.io. Support antwortet schnell und ausführlich. Die End-zu-End Verschlüsslung finde ich gut (wobei man schon auch drauf vertrauen muss, das alles so läuft, wenn man die Software nicht selbst analysieren kann). Das die Software offen ist, schafft aber dennoch vertrauen. Ich hoffe das der Anbieter nicht schnell wieder vom Markt verschwindet.

Ich war zuerst sehr zufrieden, Aber derzeit löscht filen Tausende von Dateien und Verzeichnissen ab einer bestimmten Verzeichnistiefe – keine Hilfe vom Support-Team. Die Dateien scheinen immer noch im Papierkorb zu liegen, da ich insgesamt 5,1 TB nutze, meine Cloud aber nur etwa 1,9 TB groß ist. Es ist jedoch nur möglich, sie einzeln wiederherzustellen (abgesehen davon, dass sich unter den gelöschten Dateien sicherlich auch Dateien befinden, die ich wirklich gelöscht habe), was einen riesigen Zeitaufwand bedeuten würde. Es ist also eine reine Katastrophe.

Ich habe das selbständige Löschen einiger Dateien zum ersten Mal vor sechs Wochen bemerkt. Da konnte ich sie nach mehreren Anläufen wiederherstellen (sie wurden beharrlich neu gelöscht, kaum waren sie synchronisiert). Seitdem habe ich um eine Antwort gebeten, wie das passieren konnte, und meine Protokolldateien gesendet – keine Antwort. Heute musste ich den Verlust von Tausenden von Dateien feststellen, habe eine dringende Anfrage an den Support gesendet – keine Antwort.

DAHER WARNUNG VOR NUTZUNG mit vielen Dateien!!!!

As an IT professional, I’ve probably tried every cloud storage product on the market. There aren’t many platforms that give you zero-knowledge encryption along with flexible sync that doesn’t require the use of a single sync directory. Filen is new to me, and I was immediately impressed. The pricing is competitive. The desktop app is beautifully designed. You have an array of options on folder/file sync strategies, sharing, chat, notes. Performance is impressive and you can map your cloud storage as a Network drive for direct access. I’m looking forward to switching from another platform to Filen. Keep up the great work!

Die End-zu-End Verschlüsselung find ich Klasse, habe schon lange nach so einem Angebot mit fairen Preisen gesucht. Kundenservice was schnell mit dem Antworten und sehr Kompetent. Danke für das Angebot.

I've used the service for a while.
Free plan is good, lifetime plan is better. I like the mobile app, desktop client and web interface. You can easily do things.
Its very handy to create custom profiles between desktop and cloud so you can mirror, sync or backup folders in both directions. Speed is ok and everything looks promising.

Then i realized that there is an issue with the preview of media files. The generated link when previewing a media file gives access to that file to anyone with the link. Is like creating a public link for the file automatically. This link works for days even after you may delete the file.
Upon checking on forums this is an old issue that is not fixed yet.
Not acceptable for a service that is supposed to provide privacy, security and trust.

Edit. Its been weeks and deleted files are still accessible from the preview link.

Expérience problématique : il a fallu que le service d'assistance valide pour moi mon adresse mèl, je ne recevais aucun e-mail pour le faire. Fonctionnement correct du stockage Cloud ensuite ... jusqu'au moment où j'ai voulu tester "mot de passe oublié" (j'avais sauvegardé la clé de récupération). Là aussi, je ne recevais aucun e-mail, donc impossible de récupérer mes données. L'assistance m'a proposé de changer pour moi mon adresse mèl. Lorsque j'ai donné mon accord le 13/8 pour une autre adresse mèl, je n'ai plus entendu parler de rien jusqu'à aujourd'hui 25/8 malgré relances. Décevant !

I'm not impressed. Sync dont seem to work perfectly (i experienced 2 times it stopped without notifying me that it stopped so you want me to sit and keep an eye on it every day?) and mobile sync is not possible without you set a webdav server up on your own server somewhere and connect through that. They have a webdav proxy but i dont think it works and they stopped answering my support messages. I was very hopeful when i found them and bought a plan. i would have bought more plans if they didnt dissapoint me. Maybe I'll have to host my own. Also Its hard to trust anyone with your private files, so I honestly think the best solution is self hosting on your own private server or machine. If I was them I would teach (and make it easy for) people how they themselves can encrypt data before its sent to their servers. That way youre in full control and off course it limits many of the fancy function. But most of us dont need fancy functions, we just need to sync or backup and maybe run a caldav and a carddav and maybe some people would love to have a file viever app. Anyhow I dont feel I trust them anymore.

Ich bin eigentlich hochzufrieden mit filen.io. Aber für den Desktop Client muss ich einen Stern abziehen.
Mit Android ist der Upload wirklich schnell nur mit Windows geht der Upload mit angezogener Handbremse.
Ich wollte ca 25GB hochladen nach 8 Stunden stand dort eine Restzeit von 5 Stunden.
Mit Android funktioniert es dann super.

Best E2E Cloud Storage Provider

An incredible service and desktop app. Supports syncing to desktop automatically, with the option to only sync one way (so cloud changes won't override local changes or vice versa). Supports mounting to a local directory and a S3 proxy.

Price is excellent (competitive with Backblaze, cheaper than AWS). Includes an encrypted notes and chat app, which I have not used yet.
