A good use for your money, but at a risk…
I've used the platform for some years to put money to good use for renewable energy in Africa. Interest rates are good, but that reflects the increased risk of these projects, and I have lost significant sums with some over the years. Investors are repeatedly warned of this risk.
The process of application is fairly straightforward, though you're made to download the offer document twice, to make sure you understand the risks. It's useful that you can invest in an ISA.

Several of my investments have been written off. Energise Africa's latest figures show that 18.3% (~£8m) of total ~£44m borrowing at mid-2025 was either payments overdue or completely written off.

As you are aware, we always make it clear that investing in early-stage businesses, particularly in developing countries, carries inherent risks.
All organisations on our platform undergo a rigorous due diligence process, reviewed by our team and an independent credit committee, to ensure offers are fair, clear and not misleading. However, external factors such as the pandemic, inflation, and currency fluctuations have created difficulties for some issuers, which in a few cases have unfortunately led to business closures.
Despite these challenges, our issuers have collectively repaid more than £30 million in capital and interest to investors to date.
When issuers face repayment difficulties, our team works hard to support recovery wherever possible and to keep investors updated as soon as new information becomes available. At the same time, we are developing new investment products designed to retain strong social impact while giving investors options that reduce risk exposure.
At the heart of Energise Africa is the belief that investments can deliver financial, social and environmental returns. We’re proud that, to date, our investors have helped over 750,000 people gain access to electricity and have contributed to avoiding more than 800,000 tonnes of CO₂ emissions. While financial outcomes can vary, the positive impact created is substantial and long-lasting.

Anticipate low returns
I have invested in 26 companies on the platform since 2017. Investments have been written down or remain in arrears for 9, and recovery rates have been at the lower end of estimates with updates typically communicating downgrades or extensions. My overall return is slightly negative. I was reluctant to commit significant sums at the outset and spread my investments across companies and feel that approach was sensible as investments on the platform are essentially philanthropic: the interest rates offered would have needed to be at least 5% higher to have adequately compensated risks on the basis of my experience, at least.

We're sorry to hear that your overall return has been disappointing, and we’d like to address some of the concerns you’ve raised.
Investing in early-stage businesses, particularly those operating in developing markets, does carry risks. We are transparent about this from the outset, and we always recommend spreading investments across a portfolio to help mitigate those risks. And we’re pleased to hear you took a diversified approach.
While some investments have unfortunately resulted in losses or delays, we’re proud that to date, over £27 million in capital and interest has been repaid to investors via the platform.
Our due diligence process is thorough, with every investment opportunity individually assessed by our team, reviewed by a credit committee, and subject to regulatory oversight to ensure all promotions are fair, clear and not misleading. Even so, unexpected global and local challenges, such as the pandemic, inflation, and currency fluctuations, have impacted some issuers and the communities they serve.
When issues do arise, we work hard to engage with the businesses involved, including negotiating with administrators where necessary, and we update investors whenever meaningful information is available. These situations can take time, but please rest assured that recovery efforts remain a priority for us.
It’s also important to clarify that Energise Africa is not a philanthropic platform. Our mission is to offer investors the opportunity to earn a reasonable financial return while supporting businesses that are addressing major global challenges like energy poverty and climate change.
Offering significantly higher interest rates, as you suggest, would undermine our ability to provide affordable finance to these impactful enterprises.
We do believe that even when repayments are delayed or lost, the social and environmental outcomes of these investments remain valuable. Thanks to our investors, over 750,000 people now have access to clean electricity, and more than 736,000 tonnes of CO₂ emissions have been avoided.
Looking ahead, we are also launching more investment opportunities that are backed by Results-Based Finance agreements, designed to help reduce risk and improve investor confidence, while still delivering direct positive impact.

Easy to invest in making a difference
It's good to invest in projects that really make a difference. The projects are clearly explained and the website is easy to use. I've invested in over twenty projects over the years. Out of these, one project hasn't met the repayment schedule - it remains to be seen whether it will make the final payment or not, but that's the risk you take with an IFISA. If I lose money, I'm happy to know that it will still likely have improved people's lives.
