I regret signing up with this company
I regret signing up with this company.
My own fault to be honest, I should have done my own research instead of relying on recruiter's suggestion. They appear to be terrible at accounting, something that should be a core part of their business.
I contracted through Umbrella.co.uk for 4 months and had 3 issues, for which they consistently blame HMRC:
1. During the onboarding I gave them my P45 but my first payslip 1257L/X (I believe an emergency tax code). I asked them about it, they said they have no control of it, and it was all HMRC
2. They issued my P60 showing only the income I got through them and no previous employments listed. Again, apparently it's HMRC fault
3. My contract was terminated last month, they paid me for few days I worked in June in July. Now they are reaching out telling me that there was an overpayment and I need to reimburse them about a day's worth of work money. Guess whom they blame for that - HMRC.
A short follow up. It is good to know that Umbrella.co.uk cares about their reputation but still does not explain why they are:
1. Refusing to provide clear calculations showing how they came up with an overpayment amount and pointing me to their payslips which are practically impossible to understand, not only for me but also a qualified accountant I showed them to
2. Refusing to send a formal request for repayment in a company letter-headed document, insisting that an email with bank details in it is sufficient.
I can't just send money to something telling me in an email I owe them money, but cannot show me clearly why and refusing to use an official company issued document.

Easy but Expensive
Generally easy to use customer service, although fairly expensive for the service provided.
I was forced to use this provider, when I asked about a reduction in fees I was told I could get 20% discount. Then it was explained 20% was due to the deductions being taken before tax(standard procedure)
I must sound niave on the phone.
The response from the company makes out it was a mistake in communication when it was very clearly said after a discussion off the phone to a manager about 20% deductions which it is not.
Like I say I have no choice but to use this company.

We're sorry to hear there was some confusion regarding our margin. To clarify, the 20% isn't a discount on our fee. As our margin is deducted before Income Tax is calculated, you receive tax relief on that amount, which means you don't pay Income Tax on our margin. We're sorry if this wasn't explained clearly at the time.
