Our private Douro Valley tour from Porto was truly one of the highlights of our trip to Portugal. From the moment we were picked up, our guide made the entire experience feel effortless, personal, and unforgettable.

The scenery in the Douro Valley is breathtaking on its own, but what made the day so special was the depth of knowledge and passion our guide shared with us throughout the tour. We learned so much about the history of the region, the vineyards, the winemaking traditions, and the culture of the valley in a way that we never could have experienced trying to do this on our own.

The wineries, tastings, and lunch were all exceptional — especially the beautiful winery where we had lunch overlooking the valley. Every stop felt carefully chosen and authentic rather than touristy.

Most importantly, our guide was incredibly personable, friendly, and knowledgeable. He made us feel comfortable from the start and struck the perfect balance between professional guide and enjoyable travel companion for the day.

If you are visiting Porto or the Douro Valley, I cannot recommend this experience highly enough. It was worth every penny and created memories we’ll never forget.

Fernando has driven us on a tour of Braga and Guimarães from Porto. He's very professional: he drives very well, and his explanations about Portuguese history are clear and interesting. We were very touched by his generosity and kindness. As he likes to say, traveling with him is like being part of his family—and it’s true ! It was a wonderful experience, and it was a privilege to spend a day with him. In addition, he’s an excellent photographer. He happily offers to take our picture to capture the moment together. I did a lot of research before I chose Fernando to be our private guide for our Douro Valley tour, I spoke with him a couple of times prior to booking, his responses were positive and enthusiastic throughout.
We agreed a date, an itinerary and at 08.15 am Fernando arrived to collect my partner Jill and myself from our hotel.
From the moment we met Fernando, we knew we had made the right decision, our first stop was an amazing family vineyard high in the hills for olive oil and wine tasting, we were the first visitors of the day, and the hosts were fantastic, it was obvious that Fernando had a great relationship with this family, we spent the morning sharing some fantastic viewing points, an equally fantastic lunch in a small village and after a number of other stops we arrived in Pinhao, where we enjoyed a lovely river cruise.
The weather was spectacular, our guide Fernando was absolutely great company throughout the day, his local knowledge was much appreciated and at the end of our tour we arrived back at our hotel around 18.30, a long day in theory, but it was so well planned, and we were lucky to see areas of the Douro Valley that most large tour visitors will never get to see.
At the end of the tour we both felt that we had made a real friend in Fernando, a true gentleman who really knows his stuff, it was certainly the highlight of our 4 day visit to Porto, and we would certainly give him 10 stars if we could have !
Would not hesitate to look at the varied tours Fernando offers and book any of them in the future.

A last-minute decision that turned into one of the highlights of our trip! Before heading to the airport, we were lucky to find Fernando available to take us to the Douro Valley and we’re so glad we did. Despite the time constraint, we were able to see so much and truly take in the beauty of the region.

While many come to the Douro Valley to savor its famous wines, our family doesn’t drink and honestly, we didn’t feel like we missed a thing. The sweeping landscapes, terraced vineyards, and peaceful river views were more than enough to leave us in awe. It was a quick visit, but one filled with unforgettable scenery and moments we’ll always cherish. Proof that sometimes the best experiences come from the most spontaneous decisions!

Fernando is a wonderful guide and has a real passion and love for his country. He took out family on a private transfer from Porto to Sintra with a stop over in Caimbra and Tomar. He also showed us hidden gems and wonderful cuisine on the way. Highly recommend!

A wonderful experience.
Fernando provided a well priced and very informative and incredibly friendly day of driving me to meetings in the Douro. Given the recent storms, with power lines being down and road closures the day was 2.5 hours longer than expected- bit Fernando simply delivered on the with skill and a smile. I’m so glad I didn’t elect to hire a car and drive myself and am very glad to recommend Fernando’s services!

We had such a blast with Fernando and Rui guiding us on a full day tour packed with activities. We visited 2 small family wineries with bottomless amount of wines, ports, tasty homemade jams and snacks. Breakfast and lunch were fantastic. The river boat ride & scenic stops along the drive were spectacular! We are so happy we found Fernando and this company, and we highly recommend them!

I enjoyed Porto even more the second time around, thanks to his thoughtful recommendations and for personally driving us to the best sights within our limited timeframe. After the intensity of our Camino de Santiago trip, our time in Porto was a truly relaxing and enjoyable break—just what we needed before returning home and back to reality.

We used Fernando Almedina with Portooneprivatediscovery for two different day trips during our stay in Porto, the first was. Douro tour with private wine tasting, visit to Palacio de Mateus, lunch and wine tasting river tour, and final winery stop that overlooks the valley. Our second day, we hired Fernando to take us from Porto to Nazáre. Along the way we stoped Coimbra to see books and bats. Then to the wonderful medieval town of Óbidos. Finally dropping us at our hotel in Nazáre.

Fernando took my husband, our four year old son and I on a tour of the Douro Valley. He was a literal saint with our son, Max - kind, patient, attentive, and very fun!! He accepted our procrastination in booking, and helped us out for a last minute tour.

We were able to do several stops, scenic overlooks, a delicious lunch, and a beautiful tasting.

Each spot he picked felt well thought out, quaint, locally owned and operated.

VintageTheory - Boutique Porto Winery. It is on a beautiful property and had great food. (Even takes you by Magellan the explorers childhood home!)

We really wanted to see the valley as we had heard it was beautiful, but we were hesitant to make the drive out on our own. He made it possible with our son!!

His van was perfect for a big group or a kiddo.

What an outstanding experience we had with Fernando. He has such passion for this area of Portugal. He is so well informed. Our day started at a beautiful family vineyard, in the gorgeous
Douro Valley with a private tasting. From there we saw the breathtaking vistas deep in the heart of the Douro Valley followed by the breathtaking Mateus Palace with another well informed tour. Next was a spectacular lunch and wine tasting in Sabrosa and a stop at a wealthy family home. More breathtaking views, another well informed wine tasting, and a stop in Amarnte for a 16th century church and back to Porto. A trip to the Douro Valley should not be attempted alone. I highly recommend Fernando to guide you on a history rich memorable day. He will also photograph for you along the way. Thank you Fernando we will remember this day for a lifetime.

We used Fernando’s services two days and had an amazing experience! We did one day from Porto to the Duoro valley and it was beautiful. We also did a trip from Porto to Cascais and he stopped a few towns on the way. Loved seeing the countryside and the great towns. Highly recommend Fernando!

I cannot say enough good things about Fernando Almeida, the wine tour of the Duoro Valley was a perfect ending to our trip. He was a wealth of information and was so gracious and kind. The wineries he chose for us were just spectacular.
