12 Peaks in 7 Months
In early 2023 a casual conversation with some colleagues put us on a pathway to cooking up the idea that we'd like to complete four, three peak challenges during the course of the year.
We christened this the 12-in-23 challenge and chose to use it as a fund raiser for Alzheimer's Research UK (justgiving:team-arm-12-in-23). The other key decision that we took was to undertake it with ThreePeaksChallenge.uk
We started off with the gentle introduction of the Surrey Three Peaks, when we joined one of their open events in April. Subsequently, we then took on the Yorkshire Three Peaks in July and the National Three Peaks in mid-October - again both open events. Before rounding things out with a private Welsh Three Peaks over the final weekend of October.
Across the four events that we took part in, a total of 28 of us participated at one point or another with a few of us taking part in all four. Everyone from the team felt a sense of achievement from taking part in the challenge and everyone was also very appreciative of the setup, organisation and execution by ThreePeaksChallenge.uk.
As the instigator and organiser of our challenge of challenges I found that ThreePeaksChallenge.uk really struck the right balance between being super relaxed and helpful on the admin/arrangements side of things whilst being super organised and completely professional out on the hills where groups were led and supported by first rate Mountain Leaders in sensible ratios to participants in both open and private events.
Ultimately, as long as you enter into things understanding that you are undertaking a genuine challenge where you will have to cope with whatever the weather throws at you on top of the demands of the terrain then you should be comfortable in the knowledge that ThreePeaksChallenge.uk know what they're doing and they do it very well.
Finally, a tip for anyone undertaking the National or Welsh challenges... don't forget to pack travel sickness tablets. You might not feel that you need them under normal conditions, but you might think differently when you're trying to get some rest on the back seat of a minibus weaving through country lanes in the dark for a few hours at a time.

Very quick turnaround from ordering to delivering, no fuss. Thank you.
One of the best things I've done!
One of the best things I've done!
Martin, our guide, was super helpful, kind and caring. I suffered with my knee on the way down Whernside and he supported me down every step. Thanks, Martin!
Superb experience
Superb experience. The weather at Fort William was dreadful meaning it was touch and go for the drivers to get us out of Scotland. The shear determination from the guides and drivers meant we still managed to complete 3 peaks, albeit having to swap Scafell with Whernside due to weather. Fantastic experience and great staff in what was dreadful conditions.
Fantastic staff
Fantastic staff, all well trained experienced people and even when you struggle they support you. Truly deserve 5* rating.
Toughest challenge, but loved it!
The organisation was top class. My mountain guide John kept me going despite the driving wind on Scafell Pike and treacherous conditions on Snowdon. It’s definitely the hardest challenge I’ve ever took on but the mountain guides were fantastic and helped throughout.
Best weekend…….
Maria and Steve could not be more helpful in the lead up to the challenge, during and after. The guides were amazing (special thanks to Pete and Al who I spent most of my time with) and I put my full trust into their hands as the weather wasn’t on our side for the second 2 mountains! They kept us safe and on track at all times which is no easy task with such a large group. I highly recommend The Three Peak Challenge company if anyone is looking to do the national 3 peaks or any of the other events they arrange.
I will definitely be booking another event with them <3
Amazing experience, fabulous team
Just finished the national three peaks challenge. Couldn't summit all three due to weather but the team from Three Peaks Challenge were absolutely amazing. Friendly, informative, knowledgeable, supportive, encouraging... Fab. Was a godsend to be driven in comfortable minibuses and having water provided was a win. Lots of laughs, huge accomplishment. Thank you team 👍

Do not use, summiting out of your control
Do not use, summiting is out of your control
I suspect the reviewer below me was also part of my group that got completely mugged off and let down by the organisation.
I was not the fastest of the groups but our Group (2) along with Group 1 ahead of us still had enough pace to summit all three peaks in 24 hours. In fact I personally had made such good time on the previous two peaks, I had an extra hour buffer to complete it outside of the minimum 4 hours or so you have to hit on Snowdon.
Unfortunately after pushing my body through brick walls and the hardest thing I have ever done, being awake for 30 hours and spending the best part of a £1000 on the challenge, flights, hotel and equipment we were within touching distance of the peak to be told they would not be allowing us to summit. I am not joking, we were at the pillar at the top which flattens out and reveals the train track. Maybe 15-20 minutes from the peak (which I have climbed before).
One of the reasons for this was because there was a member in our group who decided it was not in his interest to use poles. The only person out of 40 who even after the brutal verticality of Scaffel thought "nah", even after myself audibly hearing the guide questioning his decision. The guides repeatedly offer free poles at each mountain. I am not exaggerating when I say we were stopping and waiting for multiple 15-20 minute periods for this person to catch up. He killed us, they should have forced and advised him to.
Now you may be thinking, ok they cant be responsible for slow movers, but they are. That is the whole bloody point, they have to manage and optimise the groups to get you up there, that's what they are paid to do.
The strategy the guides use throughout is that if you are fast, you get bumped up a group, if you are slow you hang back at a certain point and get picked up by the slower group when they catch up. Fine, but this guy was CLEARLY struggling even on Peak 2, barely completing a step every 10-20 seconds (again refusing poles) and regularly stopping. Why was he not dropped back or picked up by the guides? Why even on Snowdon, when there are slower groups behind us could he not be told to drop back a group. Or even wait for us at the pillar on the flat pre-peak while we summit.
The ridiculous thing is even though the poor organisation caused our summit to be cancelled, and our extra time be eaten away at, we still made it to the finish line from the train track pre-summit in 23 HOURS on the dot! I think we could have summited even with the bloke's struggles based on this.
After all that, we were waiting over an hour at the bus for the slow group that were never going to summit to catch up. You're telling me we couldn't complete it by then? Ridiculous.
It just didn't make sense. The climbs went perfect, there was zero traffic issues. Everything was on schedule only to let down by poor organisation, poor reasoning. No flex in trying to get these people to complete it.
It doesn't matter how good your time is, they are not experienced enough to ensure those who are capable can actually complete the challenge.
I am absolutely gutted, most of my pals were in group 1 and summited, me and another were in group 2 and were robbed. The people in my group also absolutely grafted to be there and I was so disappointed for them to be let down by the organisation; you lot were troopers and know who you are. As for no-pole-man, not even an acknowledgement or apology, cheers mate, off you jog.
Majority of the staff also difficult with an air of ego about them, apart from our guide Joe who to be fair was just doing as instructed by the senior guides. He even tried to allow us to go by removing our arm bands (and relinquishing liability from the company) but this got shot down.
I won't be doing it again. What's the point. A lot of money, energy and time down the drain.
Super fast
Super fast! Received my OSmap really fast, perfect quality as previous orders - thank you!
Do not use this company for this experience
We (3 of us) went with this company this weekend. We are all fit and well up to the challenge. We successfully got up both Ben Nevis and Scafell Pike in the time available. On Ben Nevis our guide asked us to go up to the group ahead so he could go with slower walkers and not have too many people. We easily did this.
Then most of the way up Snowdon our guide told us we could not go to the summit as there was not enough time. At that point we were with a group of about 20, but the guide going to the top would only take 13 people. We were faster than may of those that the guide took up (many of them said this to us later.). We and many others then spent more than an hour back in Llanberis and could easily have got to the summit of Snowdon with others and the second guide with others coming down with the third guide.
The most frustrating thing is that many more people could easily of had time to get to the summit if the time keeping and organisation of the company was better. None of the service station stops were well organised and they all dragged on. With 40 people organisation is challenging, but it could have been done so much better. We spent lots of time waiting for people to get back on the minibus.
Amazing service!
Amazing
Amazing, quick delivery and super helpful on the end of an email. Thank you 😊
One of the Worst Companies I've Ever Come Across
This company provided one of the worst experiences I've ever had. The list of issues was endless but included:
* Leading people 3/4 of the way up Scafell Pike before telling everyone that there wasn't sufficient time - this was known all along and resulted in unnecessary danger and extreme frustration. The guide was leading the group so should have either quickened the pace (the pace was far slower than the group could cope with) and just advised people beforehand that reaching the peak would not be possible.
* Leading groups up Snowden in winds of over 50mph; again very dangerous and as everyone knew, nobody reached the peak anyway. A basic health and safety assessment would have told the organisers that the climb should not be attempted.
* Waiting over an hour to start because of the organisers seemingly not being organised; leading to the impacts above.
* No responsibility or accountability being shown.
I could go on and on, but all I can say is that this is one of the worst companies I have ever come across. Please avoid them and hopefully stop them treating any future customers badly.

Was a lot harder than what I was expecting, but we did it just myself and daughter and finished all 3. Really enjoyed the experience
