A horrible, obnoxious, petty-minded hell-hole of juvenile sociopathic youths doing little other than criticising others or getting their questions closed down or accounts suspended without explanation. The site policy protects people who vote questions and users off without explanation.

Registered but cannot comment to ask for clarification about a term used in the answer. I'm stopping for asking a question yet others are allowed to ass passive-aggressive nonsense that adds nothing of value.

I wrote this review before reading the others so it would not be biased in any way, yet I find my comments echoed in almost all the other reviews, there is definitely a big issue with moderators on the site, bullying and belittleing appear to be rampant and as someone of 68 I have no wish to be in that kiddies playground any longer. I would suggest DANIWEB.COM for programing questions.
I had been quite happily with this site from 2007 but recently one particular moderator has twice insulted answers I have given by saying they add nothing, followed by offensive comments, it might not to the moderator gods but it does to the average user. I give a simple solution to the user problem rather than the complex ones moderators love, as they can show their amazing brilliance. A person asking a question wants a simple answer not an ego, most of my posts slipped past this one moderator and I get approval, but I have had enough with his childish behaviour and arrogant attempt at bullying, I have been around long enough to know it for what it is and a call centre operator, I have done my due diligence on him, has less knowledge than I have in my middle finger. I am there to help others not praise an ego. Flagging isn't a solution as you don't even know which moderator rejects the flag, probably the very one I appear to have upset somehow, I don't him, never met him and I am very pleased I never will, as my public put down would seriously damage his ego.
So I have just left with them comfirming it, they really need to sort out their processes for flagging, it must be transparent, reasons given and by WHOM, ideally it should never be a moderator. As for being elected, they get appointed by the system on a points basis, there is no election.
The site will slide into oblivion but hopefully another site will spring up so that people can help each other again, no matter how trivial the question appears to the superior being, to the person asking it isn't trivial.

This website is a disaster, with poor help and rude moderators. Never see this bad website. Deleting my account. Time wasters!

I am a student. When I am not in class I sometimes need help on some programming problems that I am facing. Just recently StackOverflow shutdown my account and some of my roommates' accounts as well. They said we were all the same person and disciplined us for helping each other and supporting each other by voting on each others questions. They said we were shut down for "Irregularities in voting". Since when do I have to vote the way they say I have to vote?!?!? They also act like these stupid little points are money or hold some kind of real world value...so PATHETIC. Grown people scrounging for imaginary points! The imbeciles with tons of points are obviously lonely pathetic individuals. They are acting like someone is killing their mothers by voting inconsistent to what they approve of.
Most of the people on SO are very rude. I have had a very few number of people try to honestly help me. However they are far and few. All of the moderators are awful. They insist that your question is already asked/answered on another post, or they get mad if the question is not one that they feel is good enough to ask. I am at awe that this stupid website allows people to down vote you if your question is not to their liking. This is classic Neo Nazi behavior.
They kept telling me that my question was already answered every time I asked a question. If this were the case, I would not had to have spent hours going through those exact same posts that they said answered my question, in which it obviously did not. AND why would I spend my time formulating a question so these StackO gods (lowercase god) would approve of me, just to have it shutdown because some stupid moderator thinks he has all the answers. I am tired of them treating students like garbage and treating my roommates and I like we are breaking laws because we click to vote for each others' posts. I am going to talk to the dean at my school and see if we can block SO from our servers. I am so sick of them. It is obvious why they have terrible ratings given by thousands of people worldwide. Why they have to be so dirty is beyond me. I will never run a company like that as long as I live.

Just a sh!tty website full of arrogant arseh0les. If you're not an expert, your questions are just closed and not answered. It's almost like they expect the person asking the question to already know the answer and therefore, not ask the question in the first place.
A perfect website for anyone who wants to be made to feel dumb

I created a logon, spent a long time composing a question to Stackoverflow’s demanding requirements only to have it immediately dismissed and closed because it “is not focused”. As a newbie, I’m very discouraged. The answer to my question would have been either “Yes” or “No”, so how much more focused could it be? As a novice Python hobbyist, I’ve attempted to use the site many times to find answers to questions and it is most frustrating. Answers are often closed before properly answered or confusing. It’s a great idea, badly executed. I will probably delete my account because, apparently, my ability to compose a question in lucid English is not equal to their requirements.

Terrible, unfriendly and arrogant community as well as useless admin buffoons. Absolute zero tolerance to learners. Simple straight forward question closed within minutes, without even a chance of discussion.

They will literally ban you if you do not follow to the letter their nazi like question- ask guidelines or simply because people did not like your question and downvoted it. News flash Stackoverflow, there’s no such a thing as a dumb question and rather than wasting so much time being so hostile against new programmers for not asking a simple question the “right” way, you should focus on providing a platform for people to learn since we all have to start somewhere. In the words of Carl Sagan, "There are naive questions, tedious questions, ill-phrased questions, questions put after inadequate self-criticism. But every question is a cry to understand the world. There is no such thing as a dumb question".

Rubbish, garbage website with no help at all. They tell you to clarify your question as much as possible with all the details. For an amateur programmer, it may get very difficult to explain everything. They downvote you if they don't like your question, there should not be any boundaries in learning, so why would there be any downvote system?
Moreover, they don't allow you to post too many questions, which confirms my earlier claim. Why would there be any boundary or limit? They banned my profile after asking 4-5 questions because I was asking "too many questions" and I got downvoted. What a joke. This site should be banned.

Here is what it claims to be:

I spent some time working on my websites over the last few weeks. The last part was intergrating payments. Styling ‘Stripe payment button’

Here is what I came across on stack overflow, as a question:

“ Is it possible to modify style of "Pay with Card" Stripe button? I've tried modifying by,

adding a new class defined in external style sheet
modifying its own class of stripe-button in external style sheet
and editing it inline with style=""
But I cannot get the button to change its style.

It looks like it might be possible with the custom integration instead of the simple integration (source: stripe integration), but I was hoping there was something simpler.”

If you notice the latter way of *editing inline* pretty simple to understand. Here is the answer I gave that worked for me:

“ Here is what I got when I used 'GOOGLE CHROME' to find the element:

#simpay-form-524 > div.simpay-form-control > button {

// Style goes here

}

Go to appearance > customize > additional css and use it there. It worked perfectly fine for me.”

A pretty simple solution that’s essential used to style the button. This could be used in a style sheet.

I woke up this morning to find three downvotes and the comment removed for these reason and people

What context the person was asking for is irrelevant if you take a look at the 3rd part. It’s an easy solution that could be taken and used ‘in local context’

I remember a few years back now opening an account and asking a question only to revive a load of rude obnoxious individuals who seem to think they are part of some hierarchy because of their status on stack overflow.

I’m gobsmacked so many companies rely on the reputation of the unsavoury characters on this platform with such a poor reputation.

If you can’t post a plain and simple answer, on a platform claiming to be that if the above, then what is the point of them existing.? It’s a simple answer, no need at all to make anybody feel belittled.

I would advise against this platform at all costs.

This answer, as per the question of the user is a simple answer as could be, obviously I’m making the assumption that he’s using Wordpress given the fact of what he was asking for and how.

The abitrary nature of the question closure and downvote system is really designed to weed out what they feel are unwanted posters.
New to something, search for an answer, can’t find it so make a post?
Nope! Not how they work.
You are supposed to be able to find a sublink of a closed question that never came up in your search or else you didn’t do enough research and they close the question while linking to something that almost but really doesn’t answer your question.
And they have no problem talking down despite claiming to be open to all levels of experience.
Useful? Sometimes.
But the stars above help you if you need to actually make a post to get help.

They delete and block arbitrary questions.
I deleted my profile and am looking for help elsewhere.

Posted a coding question here some time ago, in my opinion well formulated and a very specific problem even providing examples. Got answers from some helpul users but despite of this it got downvoted and was closed by a moderator within a day for being too vague. Doesn't make one feel welcome in a community like this.

This is by far the worst moderated community. You have to be overly specific which makes no sense because you'll be as specific as possible and that still won't be good enough. Basically if you have a small problem they won't accept a short description that covers everything they want it to be an essay about a small detail that could be answered easily through looking at the question and the code.

I graduated with a BS in Information Systems just a year ago, and every day there can be new questions that require new answers. Questions considered simple for experts. I've asked a good number of questions that were answered and accepted by the community, but my most recent was downgraded because it apparently displayed lack of research. In my question I even stated that I had looked everywhere for an answer and that this was a last resort because I honestly couldn't find it after hours of searching. I knew that it was a simple question and it required a simple answer, but how does that define how much effort someone put into finding that answer on their own, and whether what you considered easy was the same for someone else? A question may be so simple and small, that it's very difficult to find an answer to. Stack Overflow is a site for pompous "experts" to belittle you by saying you weren't right to ask that question and instead of inspiring a desire to learn, make you feel like you can't cut it by doing the thing that all users think the site is for. AVOID Stack Overflow.

I submitted a functional answer and a 'moderator' deleted it for no reason. I shared my experience with the support team and they came with "New answers are expected to contribute something substantial not already covered in previous answers, which yours does not. Therefore, it has been deleted."

This obviously didn't make any sense because the same thread has new answers that "don't contribute something substantial not already covered".

StackOverflow is not a welcoming community for new devs to contribute and grow in, the community is hostile and the moderators are essentially dictators who can do whatever they want knowing that the support team at StackOverflow will do nothing about it.

If you are looking to hire devs using StackOverflow, expect someone to bring in the same hostile culture into your company.
