Installing your own server is an absolute nightmare. You will immediately encounter numerous errors, problems and issues with absolutely no useful guidance.

Nextcloud is a gem! The best FOSS replacement for google service, hands down.

Not only can it take care of files and photos, but it can also be easily extended with it's own library of applications to make it even more powerful.

Using Nextcloud happily for many years now and I know my data is secure.

Nextcloud continues to be a central piece of software to my, and my families life. It's got a few rough edges and needs a fair amount of fine tuning, but the sheer amount of functionality combined with a surprisingly decent UX lends itself nicely to be the goto solution for file sharing.

I left Dropbox, OneDrive (formerly known as SkyDrive when I left it), google drive and all commercial cloudstorages many years ago to selfhost my own private cloudstorage with NectCloud with some docker images on a selfhosted VPS in a german datacenter at Hetzner. And I'm totally happy and glad that I now have my own "private cloud" ❤️ There are also some german/european providers (Hetzner, Ionos/1&1 just to name some) that provide a managed NextCloud - this will respect your privacy and no company will fool around with your data you store there!

They provide free (both in terms of freedom and cost), open source software that gives me the freedom to self-host my own secure cloud storage solution for my family. It puts us in charge of our own data. It has become so ubiquitous that my wife and kids don't even think twice about it, it's just there. I use it to share photos and such with people outside the home, to keep backups of our phones and mobile apps and everything. It really is just incredibly flexible, useful and powerful. There's even a store full of "apps" to extend its functionality to serve as an RSS feed organizer, music streaming service, etc.

I have been hosting it for years on my Linux home server, and have no intentions of stopping any time soon. It's useful and reliable.

I wanted to switch cloud storage provider and found a good service through NextCloud managed Ionos.

I installed Nextcloud, connected it to Ionos and proceeded on syncing the data ...

It completely deleted those folders and replaced them with 'unsupported reparse tag 0x9000301a'

PLEASE STAY AWAY FROM THIS AWFUL SOFTWARE.

entweder ist die Software Schrott oder unsere IT ist nicht in der Lage die korrekten Einstellungen vorzunehmen. Die Cloud ist unbrauchbar zum Versand von Unterlagen. Der Passwortschutz funktioniert nicht, Absenderangaben werden nicht übermittelt. Ein heilloses hin und her Geklicke. Ständig hängt die Cloud. Es nervt einfach nur.

Unreliable service on WebDAV. Deleted critical therapy data in syncing. I've switched to Dropbox for syncing mobile app data and intend to use Nextcloud only for backup and collaboration.

Sehr gute Cloud! Finde es super, dass man die Handy Bilder mit der App synchronisieren kann.

I have tested nextcloud as a self-hosted app - verdict do not go for it, unless you want to loose your local files for good

now I have decided to give it a go with IONOS ( super bad experiences so far) + Nextcloud, they offer managed Nextcloud installation on their Cloudservers.

So far my experience is zero star - the app is so buggy, all this open source things are risky... luckily I had redundant backup otherwise my work files would have been gone.

they have an App Store offering various app to extend the functionality of NextCloud - well most of the app there are developed by third-party "weekend developers" and they even dare to feature some of the app - one would think it is a sigil of a solid app, well it is not!

So far Nextcloud for me is next-in a hundred years-cloud. People I don't know what you think, the basic functionality of a cloud storage is an ironclad, solid, robust sync app - well yours is not definitely none of the above.

this is the thing with this open-source apps - seems like a cheaper option, at the end you end up paying the price of possible data-loss, nerve wrecking, and not even close production-ready environment.

End note: I am not a programmer / coder ... so that why I gave a 2nd chance with a managed Nextcloud via IONOS - well so far it makes no difference.

What the Nextcloud app perfectly delivers along with IONOS ist Nothing but disappointment, sleepless night hoping that all the files are synced, and not lost in space and annoyance pure beyond compare.

Very useful file hosting services, especially during the pandemic, it helps a lot to work from home.

Nextcloud offers the world's best experience for self-hosting, as far as I have been able to research. Yes, you need to do some technical heavy-lifting, but there's a wealth of great advice out there.

All of their programming code is public, which means you can verify their claims for yourself (more importantly, so can the whole internet).

Go slow, there's a learning curve, but it can save you hundreds or thousands to provide your family with the same features of proprietary cloud providers.
