Edensor, Chatsworth
I'm interested in using linseed oil paint so visited Edensor- one of the Chatsworth villages where Brouns and co paint is used extensively on exterior timber.
Great colour, perfect tone and richness but I did stumble upon a broken fence (hit by a truck probably) which surprisingly revealed that the pine timber substrate was not in the best of conditions with some visible rot which I was very surprised to see.
I'm not in the business of leaving bad feedback scores unless truly merited (indeed the rot might have set in prior to Brouns and Co paint being used) hence the 5 stars however I would urge Brouns and co to visit Edensor and view the broken fence (beautiful arcaded neo-gothic design atop a wall, opposite the church, horribly smashed) and respond to this feedback as the state of the broken timber did leave me to think that perhaps I should use a solvent based paint with the customary yearly filling and repainting of cracks rather than a linseed oil paint. Now I am genuinely not sure...
Thank you

Svar fra Brouns & Co
Hi, and thank you for taking the time to leave such a thoughtful review. We are very pleased to hear you appreciated the colour, tone, and richness of the finish in Edensor. It is a remarkable estate and one we have supplied over a number of years.
We should note that, while our paint has been used on parts of the estate, we are not involved in the estate’s maintenance programme or timber repairs, so it is difficult for us to comment on the specific fence you mention or whether it had previously suffered water ingress or decay before repainting.
From a technical perspective, properly applied linseed oil paint behaves very differently to modern synthetic coatings. Rather than forming a hard plastic film that can trap moisture, linseed oil paint allows timber to breathe and dry naturally through diffusion. This significantly reduces the risk of moisture becoming trapped within the timber — one of the major causes of rot in traditionally constructed joinery.
If the damaged section still exists and you happen to have any photographs, we would genuinely be very interested to see them and better understand what has occurred. Please do feel free to email us directly.
Many thanks again for the thoughtful and balanced feedback.
Best wishes,
The Brouns & Co Team

The brown is green
We rang up to say we weren't happy with the colour as we had ordered brown and we cant just paint over it. We felt brushed off. Sad because the finish is lovely.

Svar fra Brouns & Co
Dear Sue,
Thank you for your feedback and for mentioning the lovely finish of our paint—it’s great to hear you appreciate its quality!
We’re sorry to hear that the colour didn’t meet your expectations. To help avoid such situations, we offer sample pots and hand-painted colour cards that show the exact shades, so customers can confidently choose the right colour for their project.
It’s also worth noting that our linseed paint can easily be applied over any existing colour, making adjustments straightforward if a different shade is desired.
We hope you’ll give us the opportunity to assist you further.
Kind regards,
Michiel Brouns
Gorgeous!
My only small disappointment was ordering from the UK right before they announced that they now have a US base and having to pay for shipping. However, it was well worth it to receive such a beautiful paint. The color is perfect for our exterior trim and we are very excited to have such a gorgeous option for our historic home. Brouns is more fitting to our particular taste than other big linseed oil paint brands in terms of branding and color options.

The first time I used Linseed paint
Brilliant advice from the team at Brouns. It was my first time using linseed paint and I found it to be a wonderful product, easy to apply and goes a long way. Looked amazing once it was finished and I'm told will stay looking that way for a long time to come.

The paint gives a lovely mellow finish
The paint gives a lovely mellow finish. It does take some time to dry, I would be reluctant to use it in the winter.

Great Company to deal with and it is…
Great Company to deal with and it is always a pleasure to speak with people that know about the products they sell.
In my opinion they have the best linseed oil putty I have used in nearly 44 years in the building trade.
First Class service.
Many Thanks

Very bad batch of paint sent to us
Very bad batch of paint sent to us. Stained and never cured properly. Very poor. But the worst was the response of the owner: "Move away and stop complaining about it ! " Disgusting service. Painting is part of my work, so I know a thing or 2 about painting ! so this company is unprofessional and awful response. You HAVE to trust other Linseed paint brands !!

Lovely paint to work with
This paint is lovely to use, not drippy at all as it dries more slowly than modern paint. It needs the three coats as described in the videos to get to the full colour. I trialed it on a test piece of wood which I left out in the rain for months and not a hint of flaking-still looks as good as day1. Colours are lovely too.
