I have used Drake Tax Software for 10…


I have used Drake Tax Software for 10 years. The software is very well designed to recognize and handle virtually every tax situation. Entry is easy and straightforward and entry data , once entered, is populated into every other related schedule.

The best part of Drake is that their personnel can answer every question, no matter how unusual. The only wait times I have ever experienced are on 4/14 and 4/15 and then the wait time is less than 5 minutes

Inexperienced Support and Declining Software Quality Amid Rising Costs

Technical support lacked experience. Even seasoned tax preparers had to rely on Facebook groups to obtain competent software guidance. Drake’s in-house support was not adequately equipped to resolve technical issues, and access to knowledgeable backroom specialists was effectively nonexistent.

I have been a tax professional for over…40 years

I have been a tax professional for over 40 years. I have graduated from several software packages over the years. Finally I have found a software application that is at least 85% able to handle the hundreds of personal and business returns that I prepare. I wil stay with Drake software as long as I am engaged in the business of tax preparation and client support.

I used Drake Software for 13 years now

I used Drake Software for 13 years now. I had heard that UltraTax was so much better. So i switched for the 2025 tax season. What a mistake! By mid-February, I paid fort he Drake subscription and went back. UltraTax almost destroyed my tax practice. Using another tax program made me realize how good I had it with Drake. They also have the best customer service hands down. When I call, they answer right away. I only had to wait a few minutes one time at the peak of tax season. They always resolve my issue. With UltraTax, I ALWAYS resolved my issue while I was talking to their customer service. Their customer service reps had no clue how to use UltraTax or how to resolve issues. They were totally useless. You can't go wrong with Drake. Outstanding tax program allowing me to process and submit tax returns efficiently and accurately. With the other program, I spent most of my time searching and Googling where to find the screen I needed to enter date rather than actually entering the data. You will never go wrong with Drake Software.

Do not buy this software.

If 0 was an option, I would choose 0.
My very first tax season. Purchased DTO and immediately couldn’t start filing because they couldn’t get 2024 uploaded to my account. Weeks pass by after me calling every day to get this fixed… we are now outside the refund window. They finally get it figured out and there’s no refund showing when there should be for a simple return. I call support and they openly admitted that they are new to online and have no experience and that I’ll have to wait for a call back from someone else. Days go by and no response so I bought Lacerte and they got the job done. I called for a refund after all of this and they told me that the refund window had passed. Horrible software and customer service. I am completely mortified and wouldn’t wish this experience on anyone.

I've used Drake for what seems decades

I've used Drake for what seems decades. It used to be great. Here I sit at 9:30 pm on April 15 having waited almost an hour for a tech support callback. I'm losing business because I have to tell my clients support sucks. The program has many issues where it just doesn't work. I'll be switching to something else next year, I can't live with Drake any longer.

Major issues in 2025

Drake has been great in previous years but 2025 has been a disaster. It is unbearably slow and freezes often when set up as a network. I have the exact same set up as prior years but this year has major issues. I've wasted hours on the phone with support and they pass responsibility to an IT professional or blame it on windows. I am seriously considering transitioning to a new software because of the issues and the lack of help from Drake. I feel like Drake is legacy software held together with coding held together by band-aids that the update to windows 11 has major conflicts with the programming.

Very disappointing experiences with Drake Software

I have been using Drake Software for many years now. And it's always been a pleasant experience. Customer service was excellent. And even the managers would get on the phone to help if things were more complex. However, this is NO LONGER the Drake Software of years past. For the past couple of years after the buyout, everything started slowly changing. Customer Service now is Terrible. The representatives that you get on the phone are barely trained. They don't know how to diagnose a problem. They don't even know how to trouble shoot properly. And if you ask for a manager or lead person, they tell you that someone will call you back. Well the call NEVER COMES -just empty promises!! The software now is doing some crazy things and I cannot get help. The service and product have gone downhill FAST. I am shocked! I will not be with Drake next year.

Loving Workflows

Loving Workflows, keeps us on track and allows staff to see where in the process things are when clients call to ask, without having to bother everyone in tax.

BUT, when we e-filed extensions, it moved all of the returns to "e-file accepted" which is imprecise. There should be an Extension Accepted that it automatically moves to, so people don't think we've e-filed returns that are not complete. This will cause confusion, especially with non-tax staff responding.

Co-dependent No More

You continue to build a very co-dependent world and force us to suffer the choices you make on our behalf. We are certain - if we could actually have a conversation with someone at Drake - that we would be told the reasons you make these choices is "for your [our] convience. But we are rarely find these choices convenient for us. Yet there is no way to changes them. So we continue to suffer in this co-dependent relationship.

Examples -
> Where the dashboard lands when logging into our Drake world - we hate it and want a different landing page for many, many reasons but find no ability to alter or change where we land

> Where we land in Drake Portals with the CLIENTS tab automatically loaded and open. Almost never (98% of the time) is that our starting point when we log into DP but yet we are forced to start there - with CLIENTS open, for some arbritary and capricious reason you have forced on us, 'for our convenience.'

Other examples abound but those are the two we encounter a million times a day where we spend precious time - especially during tax crunch time - having to undo the things foisted upon us.

We have long considered this practice by Drake to be a calous disregard to respecting us and our time. We also consider it abusive and unhealthy considering the co-dependent aspect of these choices which we have no power over.

Just started a trial

Just started a trial. So many companies offering things like this and I find functionality is poor across the board. This is the best I have tried so far. Good visually. Good startup emails for the client. Good checklists and questionnaires. A lot better than some other portals. However, in profile, no support for foreign address. SSN input title should be SSN/ITIN. I have resident alien clients and expat clients.

Also, onboarding requires me to enter client SSN. Just require a pin code that I give to the client for secure first sign-in. The point of the portal is to collect sensitive info securely and SSN is the most sensitive. The workflow requires me to collect it first, outside the portal. Nope. I am using a workaround right now by entering a fake ssn for sign on and providing last four to client.

Service and software sucks since Covid…

Service and software sucks since Covid 19.
Software keeps changing and hard to navigate, then customer fixes according to their thinking without IRS consideration of Tax Laws.
Customer support is decling. No supervisor?manager has correct answer to the software issues and they do not come to the phone either as if they are ALL Dead
Price keeps increasing
Seems like the software programming is done out of USA, that is why the programming of the software is louzy.

Cannot rely on this software.
