Inaccurate Report, off by over 40k
Unfortunately I was charged a lot of money to have a completely wrong report. I shared dates and amounts of staking to the company at the beginning of the process and my capital gains were off by over $40k. My accountant, untrained in crypto, found the flaws almost immediately.
I spent a lot of money to have them use there experience to make my life easier, but was left very disappointed and potentially left in a very difficult position if I would of been audited.
Update: If you truly stood by your product, you would offer refunds when a report is fundamentally incorrect. Your error resulted in a $40,000 discrepancy that could have landed me in significant trouble with the government. Despite providing all the necessary data, the output was wrong. I expect you to take ownership of this failure rather than charging full price. I am prepared to leave a 3-star review noting that while the error was eventually rectified, it required me to hire an outside accountant to identify your mistakes. I am requesting a partial refund for the service and compensation for the professional fees I incurred to fix your error.

You are right that our team missed a screenshot you provided during onboarding. That screenshot contained information about your staking activity that should have been flagged during reconciliation, and it was not. We take full responsibility for that.
Once your accountant identified the issue, our team verified the activity on-chain, reclassified the affected transactions, and regenerated your complete tax report and supporting documents. Updated reports were delivered the same day.
What we built after your case:
Your experience exposed a gap in how client-provided context was being surfaced to our reconciliation team. Rather than treat this as a one-off, we used it as the catalyst for a systemic fix. Since your report, we have implemented the following:
- Automated Client Context Extraction: every piece of client communication (emails, call transcripts, onboarding notes, uploaded files) is now programmatically extracted, structured, and cross-referenced against the transaction data before any report is generated. If a client mentions staking, specific tokens, or amounts, those are flagged and verified against the data automatically. A missed screenshot can no longer slip through.
- Global staking detection update: your case directly led to the tokens in question being added to our staking detection engine. Every future client with those same tokens will have them correctly classified from day one, with zero manual intervention.
- Context flags in every audit report: our audit reports now include a dedicated Client Context Summary section that surfaces anything the client told us and checks whether the data reflects it. If there is a mismatch, the team sees it before delivery.
We process thousands of transactions across hundreds of clients. 140 of our 149 Trustpilot reviews are 5 stars, and we have maintained a 4.7 rating because we hold ourselves to an extremely high standard. When we fall short of that standard, even on a single item out of your 2 000+ transactions, we treat it as a systems problem and build controls so it cannot recur.

There are now handfuls of crypto tax companies out there available to help us with our crypto taxes/ forms.
The question is which one to choose and how much is it going to cost in relation to actually what they will do for you.
After comparing several different options I chose COUNTDeFi.
In my story; I am just a person who wanted to create some additional income to help pay the bills and more.
I started in 2020, and heard from many influencers that crypto wasn’t officially in the tax code and that I really didn’t have to file crypto taxes.
So I didn’t. That wasn’t my smartest decision. Now nobody is claiming this. Everyone is saying do your crypto taxes!!
My first crypto platform no longer is available to operate in the US and I had to withdraw all to other platforms.
This caused me problems gathering data from past years and I know I needed help.

Not very practical way of generating reasonable proof to submit to the government
They don't understand the complexities of the tax filing for Canadian citizens, especially for those who newly became resident. I think they deal with more US citizen cases. They overly focused on a method/scenario of proving the amount of crypto owned that probably doesn't really work when submitting documentation to the government. If you don't think you will be audited, you can use their report. In my case, I have been through some cases where I have been audited, and I know that this wo'nt work. I thought I would see what method they had to assess if it would be useful for me but it didn't seem that useful. They are not going to go into your crypto databases.
I ended up going back to my own calculations and figuring it out myself

2. Approach to Proving Crypto Ownership and Cost Basis
Establishing and substantiating cost bases accurately is critical for compliance and audit readiness. This is why we follow a rigorous 7-phase process to ensure every report is defensible under review. I noted from your file that there was some frustration around our request for complete data. You had asked that we exclude certain exchanges, as you felt they were not important. However, every data source is vital—transfers between wallets and exchanges directly affect the cost basis and future taxable gains.
3. Data Source Inclusion and Report Integrity
To produce accurate reports, we reconcile all transactions across all data sources. You specifically requested that certain data be excluded, and our team advised against this, explaining the potential implications. As they wrote to you:
“We would advise you to include this as the transfers will be treated as disposals and will create taxable events. Excluding this data will also break the cost basis chain, impacting gains. I tried Count DeFi to navigate the chaotic mess of tracking my crypto transactions, gains, and losses. Initially skeptical, Count Defi came through. Working with CountDeFi was a great experience! Since I began my crypto venture, I've never really felt good about my crypto tax reporting. Most of the regular CPA's in my area had no knowledge of how to report crypto tax. With the help of Bianca and the team at Count DeFi, we were able to do a deep dive into my entire transaction history from Day 1 and compile accurate tax reports based off of my entire transaction history across all exchanges and wallets. I now feel I am in a much better place and no longer have to feel worried that I haven't reported something properly. I reached out to CountDefi for help with my crypto taxes on an impossible timeline—10 days to sort through thousands of trades. I began my crypto journey in 2022 and opened accounts on several exchanges, held cold wallets and didn’t do a good job keeping records between them all. Not wanting to deal with the mess, I constantly told myself I will clean my records when Its time to file taxes. I realized quickly trying to reconcile transactions between different wallets and exchanges was more than I could handle due to the level of complexity and my limited knowledge, not to mention some wallets didn’t export csv for koinly or have all the records of its transactions. These guys know what they’re doing and they painlessly guided me through the process. I’m satisfied with the results and will likely use them again to relieve me from the stress of it all.
