These practices are exploitative and unsustainable for small businesses. Professional platforms like Upwork allow direct negotiations without corporate interference, maintain reasonable market pricing, and protect user privacy without invasive data collection requirements.
Contra's business model damages the creative economy by making basic services unaffordable while compromising client privacy through unnecessary personal data demands.

Contra does not engage in price gouging. Our goal is to ensure independents on our platform are compensated fairly for their time and skills. To support this, we send budget nudges when a project falls under our minimum standard of $25/hr - a rate we believe is aligned with fair living wages in 2025 and not far above industry norms. These nudges are intended to help clients get their job approved on Contra, not to interfere with negotiations.
On the privacy front, Contra requires either a domain-connected email or a social media profile to verify a client’s identity. This process helps reduce spam and protect independents from fraudulent postings. Importantly, neither your email nor your social links are visible to freelancers - they’re used solely for verification purposes, so your privacy remains protected.
