Young Writers have promoted poetry and creative writing within schools and poetry competitions since 1991. Our aim is to promote poetry and creative writing, for children and young adults to enjoy both reading and writing. We run annual competitions, produce poetry and creative writing collections as well as provide free, engaging resources for teachers and young writers.

Top company

I have been entering pupils in to the Young Writer competitions for many years and the service we have had is excellent:) It is so good for the pupils to see their work in black and white. The support we have from the admin team is efficient and we are very grateful for it.

Deceptive business model exploiting parental pride

I would strongly caution parents before buying anything from Young Writers. Their tactics are deceptive.

Our son was 3 years old when his nursery submitted work to this "competition." We received a letter saying his poem had been selected for publication - flattering, until you actually read the poem.

We know with absolute certainty that our son could not have possibly communicated these ideas to a teacher independently. He was 3 at the time of the "competition". We have no idea how this poem came about or who actually wrote it. Yet Young Writers presented it as his own creative work and used it to encourage us to buy a £19.99 book.

Here is the poem - judge for yourself (names changed):

"My name is Ben and I go to preschool,
My best friend is Theo, who is really cool.
I watch Spider-Man on TV,
Playing with Daddy is lots of fun for me.
I just love pasta to eat,
And sometimes cake for a treat.
Red is a colour I like a lot,
My Spider-Man is the best present I ever got.
My favourite person is Sarah, who is a gem,
So this, my first poem, is just for them."

This is clearly a fill-in-the-blank template. It is not a poem written by a child - it is a sales tool. The business model is simple: use schools and nurseries as free marketing channels, dress up a commercial product as a competitive achievement, add a deadline to create urgency, then charge parents £19.99 per book.

The letter even states "ordering is not a condition of publication" - while being carefully designed to make you feel you have no choice but to buy.

Also, Trustpilot itself has flagged that Young Writers "may be asking for reviews in a way that Trustpilot doesn't support," which raises serious questions about their 94% five-star rating.

This is not illegal. But it is deliberately deceptive, and parents deserve to know exactly what they're paying for.

Hi Roland,

Thank you for taking the time to share your concerns. We’re sorry that your experience has left you feeling this way, and we would like to take this opportunity to clarify a few areas you have raised.

For our My First Poem competition, which is specifically designed for nursery and very young children, we do use a simple template. We do this because we would not expect a child of nursery age to independently write a complete poem. The template allows children to contribute their own interests, favourites and ideas, which can then be shaped into a poem suitable for publication. We are sorry if this was not clear from the outset.

We also want to reassure parents that there is no obligation whatsoever to purchase a book for a child’s work to be published. We do not require a purchase as a condition of publication. We provide at least one complimentary copy to the participating school or nursery so that the children, staff and parents have the opportunity to see their work in print.

The books are offered to families as an optional keepsake. We understand that not every family will want to purchase a copy, and there is absolutely no requirement to do so.

Regarding Trustpilot, we would also like to clarify the message displayed on our profile.
We do not currently pay for Trustpilot’s review services, and therefore we do not send review requests directly through the Trustpilot platform or advertise Trustpilot as a review channel. People can, and sometimes do, independently find our Trustpilot profile, like yourself, and choose to leave feedback about their experience. As a result, Trustpilot may display a message suggesting that we may be asking for reviews in a way that its platform does not support. We do not ask participants or parents to leave Trustpilot reviews.

We appreciate that the wording of our communications can be interpreted differently, and we take feedback such as yours seriously. Our aim is to celebrate children’s work and give them the opportunity to see it published, while making any purchase entirely optional.

Received a email from Lily again today asking if I had received them which I did, communication was very easy and I was pleased with her checking that we had received them ☺️ customer service was brilliant 🤩

Had some questions regarding the…

Had some questions regarding the information printed in the book which all got answered and I was fully supported and informed through the whole process of making alterations and couldn't of been easier so thank you for your help today.
