Ravelry is the best thing that has happened to knitting since probably the invention of knitting itself.
Those of us who grew up in homes where knitting was not a family passion, far from big cities with excellent libraries, and before the internet became part of everyday life, will remember how hard it was to find patterns. Often, the only option was subscribing to magazines. That could be enjoyable, but even that modest monthly cost was not affordable for everyone. And even when it was, you might find only one pattern in an issue that truly inspired you. If you then got stuck on the instructions, you were left scratching your head, improvising, and quite possibly giving up.
Then Ravelry arrived and solved an extraordinary number of problems at once.
Patterns: you could suddenly search using an astonishing range of criteria. Free or paid, garment or accessory, yarn weight, fibre, size, construction, techniques — it became possible to find exactly what you wanted.
Yarn: you could look up yarns by name or characteristics and, crucially, see what other people had actually made with them. That gave you a far better sense of whether a yarn would suit your project than any marketing photo ever could.
Learning: you could browse hundreds of real-life projects and see how a pattern turned out away from flattering professional photography. You could learn what happened when people substituted yarn, what modifications they made, and how the result varied depending on shape, skill, or taste. Groups could also provide support and advice.
Designers: designers selling on Ravelry are often only a message away. If something in a pattern does not quite make sense and you have exhausted other options, that access can be invaluable.
As far as I am concerned, Ravelry is not really social media. I see it as my own private library, knitting academy, and record-keeping vault. I have records of my stash, tools, patterns, started projects, finished projects, notes, and a queue of future makes that keeps growing faster than I can knit.
The site is functional, useful, and free. I do not need bells and whistles. If I want to doom-scroll other people’s achievements while making nothing myself, I can always go to Pinterest or Instagram.
As for the many negative reviews here: a great number seem to stem less from the platform itself than from an old political controversy and the grudges it left behind. That is not to say every criticism is invalid — no website is perfect, and complaints about customer support, for example, may be fair. But many of the one-line reviews here are plainly not genuine assessments of Ravelry as a knitting resource.
Personally, without Ravelry I would never have had free access to so much information, inspiration, and knowledge. I did not come from a family of knitters, and I do not know many knitters even now. Ravelry opened up an entire world.
Long live Ravelry, and long live knitting.

Forum moderators are obsessed with accusing people of hate speech…from both sides, left and right. They’ve lost the plot.

I like that the website is anti Trump and Maga, such hateful politics should not be on a crafting site. Take your hateful politics to someone else. The site is otherwise very good for both finding free patterns or buying patterns that support those who made them.

Ravelry is a discriminatory hate filled site that has policies that they do not use uniformly. I had my patterns removed because I was told they were pro Trump and against their policies. I asked for clarification since other sellers actually had nearly identical items in both knit and crochet. Crickets. It was Cassidy - the owner- who removed mine. Apparently he or she has some anger and mental issues. The man has previously been banned from contacted Ravelry users due to their hate filled emails. Cassidy (formerly Casey) is married to the owner and they have a teen daughter. I guess he transitioned back when the policy on Trump was added. You can still purchase pro assassination items, items promoting terrorism, drug related items, genitalia, etc. I again reached out for clarification - sent it to 5 plus departments and again removed. I had approximately 150 plus patterns there and was a member 15 plus years. Leave now is my advice.

Love Ravelry! Free patterns, paid patterns... All there!

A lot of disappointments with Ravelry. A set of 4 patterns were purchased only to receive the pdf’s in a mile long email entirely in Chinese. In fact there were no pdf’s included. Ravelry could not send them as English pdf’s. When I asked for a refund, they did not even know how to complete that. Thankfully the creator emailed me the PDF’s properly.

Ich habe seit einigen Jahren einen Ravelry Store und eine Gruppe. In der Gruppe finden meine Teststricks statt, wir veranstalten 2 Mal im Jahr einen KAL und ansonsten lebt die Gruppe vom freundlichen Miteinander und dem kreativen Austausch. Der Shop auf Ravelry ist leicht zu bedienen, wenn man Englisch kann. Ich schätze das faire Provisionsniveau, würde mir aber weitere Zahlungsmöglichkeiten wünschen. Bislang geht nur PayPal, was mich allerdings sehr hohe Gebühren kostet. Dies ist aber der einzige Minuspunkt, ansonsten ist Ravelry super!

I adore Ravelry! The patterns, the yarns, my friends, my library - all in one sweet little package. You can get inspiration using more and more detailed filters. You can find patterns for yarns that you have on hand, or are looking to buy. You can read others reviews on patterns and yarns and make educated decisions based on those reviews. A central storage place for your library, with automated (mostly) updates makes it a no brainer. It's a good place to store your stash- so that you can shop in your own stash without having to open a bin. It's lovely in all ways.

Ich schaue gerne auf der Seite. Ich kann meine Projekte dort eintragen und quasi Tagebuch führen. Eine Wahnsinnsauswahl an Anleitungen sind dort und regen die Fantasie an. Preislich muss man gucken, einige Designs sind teuer, andere erschwinglich und wieder andere sogar kostenlos. Ich stricke und häkle gleichermaßen. Ohne Ravelry kann ich mir mein Hobby nicht mehr vorstellen. Es macht Spaß!

I have tried twice to get a message to Sarah, with no response. I can't log in to my account. The log in page tells me there is no email address on file for that name. All I want is to get in and check my store!

Absolutely untrue! I don’t set the print, Word Document does. I have literally thousands of patterns in my library and the print is exactly the same or smaller! I am sorry, but I have consulted several other designers and they have confirmed with me that my print is standard and that the issue is your printer font set incorrectly. I have quite bad short sightedness and with glasses, I can see just fine. I have sold over 5000 patterns and NO ONE has ever complained about the print size. Newspaper text is considerably smaller than my pattern text so how on earth do you read a newspaper? 

I have also been advised that you can increase the print font on your own printer so I suggest you consult someone to fix your printer for you as I am a pattern designer, not a tech advisor. I am absolutely astounded by your complaint when you presume to think the text size  of my pattern on YOUR printer is my fault. Seriously! Now that is unacceptable! So again, I suggest you consult a tech expert and get your printer checked! Good day

So many patterns, usually reasonably priced and many free. Yes, some designers are newbies and their pattern instructions reflect that, but you can see the comments of other purchasers and their knitting notes, and you can message the designer. Easy to find yarns -- except trying to get info on a 50-year-old linen thread from a company that closed 40 years ago (I wasn't surprised). The needle inventory and yarn stash is nice, and it's handy to be able to access them and see what patterns I already have when tempted at the LYS.

Le mode de paiement est une plaie . Pas moyen de payer par CB , tout doit passer par PayPal , un système très discutable, surtout quand on a pas de compte . Même si vous cliquez sur paiement CB vous serez réfrigéré sur PayPal, c'est honteux .

I love Ravelry. It is the best place I know for knitters & crocheters to browse, get tips, get inspiration, buy patterns, see how other makers have got on with using a pattern, compare yarns etc. There are tons of forums and help groups and you can be as involved (or not involved) with other users as you like. Low key, tons of resources. Absolutely brilliant.

As a place to buy patterns, it is much better than Etsy.
1. Once you purchase a pattern on Rav it goes in your library. If you try to buy again you get a message saying you have already purchased, asking if you want to buy it as a gift for someone else. Etsy doesn't warn you like this. Buying patterns on Rav feels like a genuine service for users. On Etsy it is of course just a business model.
2. You can leave reviews on Ravelry, but there is no pressure to do so, also, no rewards for doing so. It is up to you. This process is much less transparent on Etsy.
3. Your account is private on Rav. Not so on Etsy.
4. I have never seen a pirated pattern on Ravelry, but they are all over Etsy (not just with crochet and knitting patterns on Etsy, but with plenty of other things too). Etsy is a big company with very bad customer service. As a buyer you cannot flag up that someone is selling something they have not created. Only the original creater can do that. I have never had to do it but I am sure that on Ravelry if there was a problem with pirated patterns the Rav team would take action to check things out. Because....
5. Ravelry team is small and dedicated. Really interested in their members. And in yarn!

J'ai acheter un patron de tricot. Le pull est très complexe et le patron est misérable du point de vu des explications. 7.5 € à la poubelle. Et il est impossible de laisser un feedback.
Ce qui s'apparente pour faux à des évaluations s'avèrent être le nombre total de personnes qui ont mis l'article dans leur favoris !!!. Une belle arnaque ce site .
