A Nightmare of Hidden Fees, Bad Customer Service, and Expired Points
I honestly don’t even know where to start with how bad my experience was at this hotel chain. First off, I booked my stay over the phone, and the operator completely messed up the reservation. Long story short, I was charged £300 more than I should have been for my stay.
When I realized the error, I contacted the customer service immediately, expecting them to resolve the issue. However, I was told that I couldn’t get a refund for the overcharge. The only "compensation" they offered was some reward points. At that point, I had no choice but to accept, thinking it would be better than nothing.
Fast forward 12 months... I check my account, and guess what? The points have expired. So not only did I lose £300 because of their mistake, but I also got absolutely nothing in return for it. Their reasoning? "You didn’t read the terms and conditions." Which, of course, no one ever really does until it’s too late.
This whole experience has been nothing but a huge waste of time and money. A company that treats its customers like this isn’t one I’ll be trusting again, and I’ll be sure to warn others to avoid booking here.
Save yourself the trouble—look elsewhere!

I would give zero stars if there was an option! Booked a hotel in london and it states no deposit. Money was taken out of my account so I cancelled.
I was refunded in points which is pretty much theft of my money.
They're now saying i purchased points with my money which I didn’t agree too.
Chat service is ridiculous and couldn’t answer any of my questions when I asked to close down my IHG account.
Never felt so ripped off and apparently it’s in the terms and conditions. But a booking thats states no deposit surely means no deposit.
Despicable company and thieves please do not book with this company
Cold Reception !!!
I checked into my room# 103 at Normandy House Fort Liberty, NC on 16 Nov 2024, and immediately noticed that it was uncomfortably cold, but assumed I could cut the heat on later, since I had to leave again at that moment. Upon my return the room was much colder, and the HVAC only produced cold air regardless if it was set to warm. I called the front desk for assistance, but was informed that they had no control over the heat, and that it was controlled by the Army (Engineers) I believe to be specific. I asked if I could get some more blankets, and after having to drive back over to Moon Hall, I was given two more rather thin blankets. My stay in the room was very uncomfortable and unenjoyable, specifically due to the cold, and you need only to go and spend a night there to understand. I didn't expect to have to remain fully clothes, to include wearing a hoodie to keep my head warm. I'm a veteran with quite a few medical conditions, so this made the conditions even worse. I would really like to be compensated in some manner, (preferably my funds credited back to my account), because I could've been warmer if I just stayed in my vehicle and slept in a sleeping bag. Why does the customer have to deal with a heating policy agreement between IHG and the Army, that provides a bad experience. An additional issue which was minor to the heat, but needs to be pointed out. The bathroom sink was clogged and drained very slowly the very first time I used it and throughout my stay. I checked out early in the morning on Nov 18, 2024, mainly because I was cold and knew I at least had heat in my car. My confirmation number was 40739537, if any additional information is needed, please let me know. LW
We used the IHG reservation service to…
We used the IHG reservation service to book a room. They charge $1521.40. When we received the receipt from the motel the worth of the room was $854.25. Being a member of this service is a waste of time and does not save anything. They refuse to compensate for the difference and their manager on the phone admits that the parent company IHG pockets the difference!!! We are done "saving" money using this service. What a disappointment!! What a farce!!!
Unacceptable of attitude for staff and management team at this holiday Inn Rugby!
We booked 3 room with 9 nights for our staff are working in Rugby, they were left home before 5 o'clock to travel almost 140 miles after over 17 hours on feet arrived at the hotel after 10PM and been told, they over booked sent them away also manager will call us tomorrow, no one. Comeback to the following day , the booking it completely cancelled. Staff at the reception is lying, for any reason my booking on IHG account has dissappear together with the confirmation cancellation which was made by this hotel. The hotel management denied , no booking under this name, we received the booking confirmation once it booked. They tried to conceal all evidence as possible by access into booking systems to deleted this.It it shocking that IHG always has been a good reputation, fully staff training, good knowledge, high customer service but unfortunately it does not apply to Holiday Inn Rugby.
Rude Manager
Holiday Inn : Houston NW - Beltway 8
This was our I first visit, to Houston on 11/1/2024 to celebrate my mothers 80th birthday and we where the big surprise.
My husband was in the room waiting for our food, I was outside talking to my mom pretending I was still at home in Colorado, not long after my husband came out upset and was in his socks and sleep cloths saying that he could not get in the room, and he as ask the front desk to give him a new key, because he had step out the room to tip the food delivery man and the door closed, and he had no key, and the key he got from the front desk did not work and the addition key he was given did not work either. When I got to the room the door would not open for me either, four keys later nothing. We sat outside our room for 4 hours with $60 worth of food going bad. No one could get the door open even after changing the batteries in the door and the lady at the desk kept saying maintenance would be there in 30 minutes (not) 11/2 hours later he showed up and had to break into the room with a clothes hanger. Staff never offered us another room for the night until they could fix the door, just a room that had not been cleaned in, I don't know how long and there was nothing in the room for comfort, no cups, no coffee pot and the furniture had burns from curling irons I would guess, I did not even want to sit down in this room because the bed had not been serviced since the last guest, so we returned to the hallway. They never even offer to replace the food that we had purchased and was not something we could heat up in the microwave. The next morning before we left for breakfast, I had my husband check the door again and of course it did not work again. At that point I told my husband I wanted to leave because the same manager that was there last night was still there and she copped an attitude with us because we were upset and then she said I want you guy's out of this hotel or I will call the cops, I said to her I called the cops last night about the treatment we were receiving and that we had nothing on us, no shoe's, no ID's , no money and no car keys. After I had packed out our stuff and was headed to a different hotel, the elevator door opened and before I could even cross the room to the desk she yelled out” I refunded your stay and gave you, your points so leave.” I said politely to the manager " I may have left my prescription sunglasses in the room so if you get the door open can you please call me so I can pick them up." she yelled at me again and said” I will not call you and get out". Just to be clear I recorded the whole incident from the night before and her treatment of guests. My husband filed a complaint with the corporate office. This manager should be fired for her behavior and never work in customer relations ever again.
And on another note, the restaurant never opened nor the bar.
Nice hotel and amazing breakfast too
The hotel was clean and quiet. The carpet could be a bit cleaner, but not that bad. The breakfast was amazing and that couple working over there made sure we got hot cocoa and we had plenty of food. Those two were friendly and made us feel welcomed. The scrambled eggs and biscuits were my favorites but everything looked and tasted great.
IHG COWGATE EDINBURGH food hygiene
IHG COWGATE EDINBURGH
We had a meal ordered to our room.
Absolutely disgusting chicken wings, I was up all night with you know what, and I only tasted one of them.
Complained to the manager and never offered our money back.
Complained to there main company and they offered me points off our next booking with them, but did not want them as I will never again book with Holiday inn Express.
I wanted my money back but the refused, which was only £27
Be Warned do not book with this Hotel chain.
Basingstoke Holiday Inn ……Beware
Stayed at Basingstoke Holiday Inn and it was filthy .
The bathroom was mouldy, smelly and full of dirt , there was no heating or even a plug in the sink.
The bed was awful creaking and on its last legs .
There was mould on the bedroom wall .
Not even 2 star
When bought to the attention of the receptionist in a kind and friendly way she just thanked us !
Feel our room was totally misold and had we not of arrived at 9pm we would of gone elsewhere
I have some pictures showing just how dirty it was but sadly cant pop them on here .
Breakfast however and the dining staff were fabulous .
Incorrect Quote for Stay, Horrible Customer Support
In July, 2024 I called IHG customer support to book a stay at a local hotel to me, Voco in St. Augustine, FL. For a trip in November! I wanted to secure an early reservation for a better price point.
During the initial booking the representative told me the price for my stay would be $326.33 for the 2 nights TOTAL (before taxes and fees). I asked for a second time to confirm, wrote down this total and the confirmation #.
I did not receive an email confirmation.
Fast forward to late October, I called back to retrieve the never received hotel confirmation email. Asked the new representative to repeat the quote for the stay and she said “it’s $326.33 per night” I replied “that is NOT what I was quoted.” We opened a claim. Jam was the name of the rep. She said she’d call me back THAT DAY and would be personally handling my case. She never called back.
I followed up on my claim on 11/2/2024 and the new case manager said “your claim was approved and you will be credited the difference for the incorrect quote please allow 24-48 hours for someone to call you with the new information and etc.” great, problem solved.
3+ days pass and no one calls so I call AGAIN. A new representative (4th-5th person I’ve now spoke with) says “I’m sorry your claim was denied. A new manager opened the case and listened to your phone call, you were quoted correctly” Excuse me?! I proceeded to explain how unprofessional and confusing their communications have been FURTHERMORE during this call the representative even twisted their words at one point saying “yes so it’s $326.33 for the 2 nights” I EVEN stopped half way through and said “wait I’m sorry I must be confused you’re saying my claim wasn’t approved but the weekend is IN FACT $326.33 for the 2 nights.” Replied “oh no that’s per day” WTF!!
I requested to open another claim for the back and forth and misinformation for the original issue that I WAS approved for during the phone call on 11/2/2024. The rep DENIED me another claim appeal process and said “No. we will not open another claim for you.”
I then asked for some form of discount for the excessive back and forth AND misinformation!! Also DENIED any. Form. Of. Discount. Unbelievable.
I’ve NEVER recovered such horrible misinformation and customer service and for them to not even care to mitigate their wrong doings is baffling. I’m also a preferred rewards member with IHG.
I will be filing a formal complaint with the Better Business Bureau regarding this matter seeing as the company refuses to support my case AND won’t let me listen to the original phone recording of my conversation with the representative who quoted me incorrectly! They are lying to not lose $400 when they’re a multibillion dollar company. Sickening.
IHG app down
IHG app down, this is my first experience after buying £500 quids worth of points and using this companies bonus stuff, and after numerous try's keeps saying something went wrong, login credentials wrong (even though i can log in with them on laptop).
phoned tech support 3 times over 12 hours. no further forward. now need to wait 48-72 hours. thankfully i have a laptop. if had only app to book then i find this unacceptable. really now im a bit gutted i have £500 quids worth of points i cant wait to use and delete this app and IHG from my business. if IHG had a report card it would read IHG pays no attention to current members and should consider customers who use it a little bit more. business travellers avoid this place!
I’m a Gold Elite member of IHG.
I just stayed 2 nights at the Holiday Inn Kensington in room 1103.
I was a guest speaker at an industry event held in the hotel.
Please avoid this hotel at all costs.
The room was incredibly small.
I complained and was allocated another room, this was 1103. 1103 was equally small.
There was no desk to work at, something that I vitally needed.
The toilet space was a joke.
The reservation desk said no upgrades were possible even though I offered to pay. Whilst standing in front of the reception desk I used the Booking.com app and there was lots of premium rooms available.
At the Building Control trade event I was attending was the UK Health & Safety Executive director for document T ( toilets) , so I shared my experiences with him.

I would have given it lower but was unable. Harlow Hoilday Inn tried to charge us £80.00 over the top of there price displayed online. it was only due to my bank that i manged to stop the payment in time. When i questioned them about it they replied. Its nothing to do with us its to do with IHG. On contacting them they told me prices can go up and down then booking, Please check your account before passing over any online booking. I'm glade i wasn't caught out. Thanks Llodys Bank Business for bringing it to it attention
Breach in Privacy at the Staybridge Suites
I stayed at the Staybridge Suites in Vauxhall and experienced a breach in privacy when I woke up to find my security camera app on my phone recorded a spycam observing me from the gap between the floor and the entrance door. The management initally agrewed with the observation then tried to distance itself from it and denied all knowledge. They claimed. it was recorded in a different hotel even though the footage was timestamped and the interior was identical. After the police got involved and verified the recording the management who knew that the police were going to investigate deleted the footage stating there was noone at my door. This was not independently verified and they commited a criminal act in destroying the evidence, and perverting the course of justice. When I returned to the suite a few months later to see if they had upgraded the room privacy which they havent, I was charged for 2 nights but later told I was banned from then on. I obviously didnt wish to stay where I wasnt welcomed and requested a refund which they refused.
Stayed at the Holiday Inn Express in…
Stayed at the Holiday Inn Express in London, KY - was quoted a price and then charged a higher one? The lamp lights by the bed didn't work and one didn't even have a bulb in it - and the electrical plugs between the beds didn't work either - had to pull a cord out of the wall to get a plug that worked? Talekd to management about it? and all he said - was we gonna stay another night? Don't recommend this place at all - and I wouldn't stay there again!
So geht man nicht mit Kunden um
English below
On the last weekend in July, we booked two double rooms with our children at the Ibis Munich East. This weekend, for the first time, the breakfast rooms of the Holiday Inn Munich and the adjacent Holiday Inn Express Munich were combined. The breakfast room was already completely overcrowded on Saturday morning, and we had to wait over half an hour for a table to become free. The buffet is in a very narrow room, so there was a long queue here too, which we accepted with gritted teeth. On Sunday, however, we tried repeatedly to eat our breakfast, which was included in the price, over the course of an hour and a half. The breakfast room was overcrowded with people sitting at tables and people standing next to them waiting for tables, the queue in front of the buffet. The room was endless, the guests were totally exasperated, the staff completely overwhelmed.
We then went out for breakfast because we didn't think it was reasonable for us or our children to wait any longer. It was now 11 a.m.
When checking out, I asked for a refund of the almost €80 for the breakfast that we were unable to eat. They did not feel able to make such a decision on a Sunday. Today is October 31st and so far all our efforts to get a refund or at least to speak to someone with decision-making authority have failed. When I actually got someone on the phone, we were offered a voucher. No thanks, we will definitely not be visiting this hotel again. About two weeks ago we wrote another email to the desk manager, the managing director and the IHG Group. No response whatsoever.
Mistakes happen, of course we understand that trying to combine two breakfast rooms can go wrong. What I do not understand, however, is the way we are treated as customers. The rooms were actually tidy and the location is very good. However, whenever you want something from reception, you have to bring a lot of time with you. Long queues form here too, even if it is just for small and quickly solvable problems. This hotel is only recommended for people who are willing to have a lot of patience.
I would avoid booking IHG
I would avoid booking IHG - mostly holiday inn Leeds Garforth.
When booking the hotel via their website using the search function for the vicinity, nowhere did it show that this hotel was pet friendly. I booked the room as 13 other members of the same party were staying for my son's birthday and our boys football academy game on the Sunday.
All night a dog was barking next to my room. I called down to reception twice and they didn't seem bothered. In fact I was told 'yeah it's probably barking to something going past "it took me 4 hours to drive up on the day. And it would b the same duration going back the next day. I have a 9 year old boy who would have been in the car. I needed to be alert for my journey.
Having contacted IHG online using their form they offered me 15,000 points (when looking at how many points one night costs - these points fall short by some 7,000) I declined this as I'd rather have a refund of the cost of an adult staying in the room. I was then offered an afternoon tea for two. I've declined because again I live 4 hours away - so why would I go all the way there for sandwiches as a sorry.
I had to call the hotel twice after being promised a phone call.
The manger is rude, was talking over the top of me and raising her voice but accusing me of being aggressive when trying to explain she was talking over the top of me.
To top it off I seems their policy is no refunds for barking dogs keeping you up as dogs are now more important than humans.
It seems that they lack the basic ability to serve the customer in the right way.
Breakfast area was disgusting. Dirty tables and when I wanted a clean one the employees behaved like it was too much of an effort.
Incredible bad
Incredible, the website was so bad that when i've tried to book it booked on the wrong date. I've noticed it and in less than 2 minutes i've called them and the result is (you should pay twice)
Rewards, Holiday Inn In Lehi, and Corporate
The Holiday Inn In Lehi, Utah set us up with a rewards card years ago. I made the reservation in my name with my phone and email, but they put the card in my husbands name with my information. Every time I made a reservation for us, I put in either my name or both of our names. When I get the confirmation email, it's the same as I put it in when reserving the room. When we get to the hotel, I check us in and my husband gets the luggage, however the reservation is changed. They take out my name and put it in only my husband's name. My name is deleted because of the rewards card. For years, we didn't think it mattered although we always asked why they changed the original reservation. Suddenly, we show up after 6 years and I cannot check us in, they treat me like I'm stealing a reservation (??? does that happen?), and my husband has to come in to verify his identity. Even though I made the reservation in either my name or both of our names. We were never asked whose name(s) to put on the rewards card when it was offered to us. So...the big issue is, I cannot make a reservation in ANY Holiday Inn now and arrive without my husband because their system takes out my name and puts it in his name. Corporate says that the only thing we can do is have my husband call and give permission for me to stay without him present. It's suddenly the 1800's and I don't have options without my husband's permission at this hotel. They won't even delete the card or put in both of our names. As it ends out the rewards card isn't even "rewarding" to us because the only thing you can use the points for is to buy things from their catalog, or convert them to air miles. Perhaps you can convert them into discounts on stays but it's not automatic. We aren't interested in their catalog and we have our own plane. Two in fact. We don't usually fly commercial, we fly private. So nothing about the rewards card is worth anything to us. OTHER hotels give a free nights stay after so many paid stays and usually without having to do anything. Not here. And to add insult to frustration the Lehi Hotel banned us because my sweet husband complained. Was it that simple? Yes. We complained in email which they stated we sent to the front desk. Of course we don't know where their emails end up. And they didn't like that we civilly debated them on the issue. We didn't make a scene in the hotel, it was through email, and we didn't call them names or cuss or anything of the sort. It was all very fact based and civil, but apparently they don't want to deal with anyone who is appalled at these practices. It's simply unbelievable. Never again will we stay at a Holiday Inn anywhere. 76% one star rating on Trustpilot is very accurate. Trustpilot is where we go to learn the unvarnished truth. It speaks for itself. If you stay at a Holiday Inn be careful how your rewards card is set up or you or your spouse may never again be able to make a reservation alone. Forty Two years of marriage traveling all over and staying at many hotels, this is an absolute first. And not a good one.
The worst
The worst! We recently stayed in an IHG Avid Hotel in Toronto (Vaughan). We drove 10 hours from Chicago to attend a funeral of a dear friend. We arrived late and tired. The next room had a screaming child all night. The only thing that the front desk offered was that the people were checking out the next day. I was falling asleep all day while trying to be there for the family. I contacted the front desk manager after we returned, Patricia da Conceicao. She was condescending and without concern for what we went through. She offered me a few points as if I wanted to return. HORRIBLE EXPERIENCE! STAY AWAY! IHG in general has no sense of the customer and what they need!
