A day late

Reply was a day late, after pick up. doubt I will ever use hertz again. The chance of losing my money again are too high, especially as they are not willing to compensate at all. Another company helped out far and beyond the simple service I required, and will have my business, 6 times a year. I will not use the booking platform nor your company again. But I will continue to share my concerns with others to allow them to make more informed decisions when renting vehicles. Poor, poor service, and no accountability. 2k down, and all you can say is sorry! Have you ever lost 2k? Do you know the financial constraints your company have now put on our family, I am guessing no. Stop apologising and pay the refund.

Horrendous service - Do not use

Terrible service. I returned a car at 3pm on the day it was due, based on the invoice their staff member did not bother processing this until the following day and so they charged me an extra $150 claiming I had the car for an extra day. One week after I returned the car I then get an additional $55 charged to my card - no email, no receipt, no explanation at all. Called the branch and they were dismissive and told me I need to talk to my bank. Emailed Hertz customer
service numerous times and received no response. Absolutely appalling customer service and theives.

I booked a car via a third party

I booked a car via Booking.com. When I arrived, the address was wrong and I had to travel 50km from my hotel to the pick up location. On arrival Hertz told me there was a problem with their Booking.com connections and I would have to pay again to get a car, and claim a refund. I paid $450 to Booking.com but Hertz charged me $600 plus $200 deposit. I lost half a day's work. Traveling 50 km back I received a $3.81 toll fee before I could register the car on my toll account. I received an invoice from Hertz for $41.88. I am still waiting on a refund investigation. I won't be using this service again. Why use Booking.com to funnel business if you won't honour the reservations?

Stay away

I give 1 star only because I can't give none.

This archaic organisation demands you use a physical credit card on pick up - they take your money any way, but they demand one way to get the car. I was unable due to issues with my aging mothers finances. this was not enough for them to give me a car on the day. I also had to cancel the booking myself, and despite the cancellation stating that I WOULD receive a refund (minus $165) I have since been fighting to receive it -noting that I had pre-paid for the car in full - apparently my reason for cancellation is not valid. I stepped to the next counter and within 5 minutes had a brand new car from AVIS - I will never chance Hertz again.

Unsafe vehicle, overdue service and no response from Hertz Australia

We are posting this review to warn others based on our direct experience with a Hertz-group rental in Australia (Dollar brand) and the complete lack of response at Hertz Australia / Group level.
From the outset, this was a long-term rental, and it was clearly communicated at pickup that we would be travelling 17,000–20,000 km over several months. This was explicitly discussed and acknowledged. The vehicle was therefore expected to be suitable for a long-distance journey.
According to the service sticker on the windscreen, the next service was due at 38,700 km. We actively asked whether the vehicle would need to be serviced or swapped during the rental due to the planned mileage. This was explicitly denied, as we were told that the Hertz/Dollar group uses an internal maintenance system which showed the vehicle as properly serviced and approved.
The vehicle is now at approximately 53,500 km, meaning it is operating around 14,700 km beyond the stated service interval.
During the rental, we encountered a serious safety issue. We arranged an independent external inspection at Goodyear Autocare, which confirmed that the rear tyres were heavily worn and unsafe, and clearly not suitable for the agreed rental duration and mileage. We were explicitly advised that continuing to drive the vehicle posed a serious safety risk. Written documentation from this inspection is available.
Given the tyre condition and the overdue service, we can no longer reasonably trust that other safety-critical components (such as brakes) are in an acceptable condition.
Despite this, we were told that all costs for roadside assistance and tyre replacement would be our responsibility, and that we were required to return the vehicle with five fully functional tyres, regardless of the condition of the tyres originally provided.
What is particularly concerning is the complete lack of response at Hertz Australia / Group level.
The matter was formally escalated to Hertz and Dollar Head Office, Claims and Executive Customer Relations. As of today, there has been no response for six days, while the rental remains active and the vehicle has been independently deemed unsafe.
In parallel, we experienced a system failure where we received an automated email stating that the vehicle had not been returned, despite the rental still having almost two weeks remaining. We had to actively contact the company ourselves to have this corrected.
Due to the lack of guidance and support, and because the safety issues cannot be postponed any further, we are now being forced to resolve the situation ourselves, including renting a replacement vehicle from another company, entirely at our own expense, simply to continue our journey safely.
From our experience, this reflects a systemic failure in safety oversight, maintenance assurance, escalation handling and customer protection across the Hertz group.
Based on what we have experienced, we would strongly advise against renting with Hertz (or associated brands such as Dollar), particularly for long-term rentals or travel involving significant distances, where safety and reliable support are critical.

Absolutely appalling experience with…

Absolutely appalling experience with Hertz. We were forced to pay a cancellation fee that was more than the cost of the rental itself — all due to a paperwork error. What makes this worse is that the staff at both the Melbourne Airport and CBD offices were rude, arrogant, and completely unhelpful.

Instead of taking responsibility, they blamed us for “neglect” even though I later discovered that their staff actually have the ability to alter the paperwork themselves. It felt like we were being taken advantage of at every step.

On top of that, when we had no choice but to proceed, the hire rate was excessive compared to competitors. The entire process left us feeling cheated and disrespected.

I would strongly advise anyone considering Hertz to look elsewhere — both for fair pricing and for basic decency in customer service.

Till administration fee of 35 AUD is…

Till administration fee of 35 AUD is absurd. It can be done with linkt in 30 seconds. And a lot of small small charges. Initially quoted 174 AUD, later on total bill of almost 300 AUD due to many charges here and there. I would stay away from hertz.

Fantastic customer service in Port Macquarie

I hired a Hertz car in Port Macquarie, then returned it to their airport depot the next day. 20 minutes later I realised that I needed to go back into the town to pick up some stuff - the helpful agent Laura gave me back the keys so I could do this - no questions, no extra charges.
You might say it was the right thing to do, but it was so good to see a staff member thinking of helping out the customer. Well done Laura

Absolute Thieves!

I have been doing rides for Uber for almost 6 years. This past June, my Nissan Pathfinder died on me. I can't complain, since I put 330,000 miles on her. But now I needed another car quick, and I didn't have a down payment for another car. I was in a real jam.

I decided to rent a car from Hertz, so I could get back to earning money. I rented a Tesla, which made me eligible for doing Luxury rides with Uber. The car cost a fortune, but when I deducted maintenance costs and insurance costs, it was a pretty reasonable arrangement.

I first started renting on July 3rd, 2024. Everything went smoothly until December 19th, 2024. I ran over a small piece of a tree branch, and the coolant lines got damaged. I called Hertz, and they sent out a tow truck. At 3 PM on December 19th, Hertz took possession of the Tesla.

I had just paid over $700 on December 16th, which would cover the rental of the car from December 16th, till December 23rd, and the Electric that was charged to the car the previous week. Since I only used the car for 3 days, I should have gotten some of that $700 refunded to me.

Instead, Hertz Car Rental charged my credit card on December 24th, for $652. They had towed the car away 5 days before that, and since they were the ones who sent the tow truck, they had to know I no longer had the car.

After 3 calls to Hertz over a 12 day period, each of which was over an hour long, I couldn't get a straight answer out of Hertz about why I was charged for a car I no longer had. I gave up, and contacted my bank. My Bank gave me $652 in credit, and launched an investigation into the charges.

A week ago, my bank took back the $652, saying that Hertz had refused the Charge Back.

So let's get this straight. Someone fraudulently charges my credit card, and later they are the ones who decide if I get my money back or not? It sounds crazy, but that is how it seems to work.

So the way Hertz sees it, charging over $1,300 for 3 days rental of a car is legitimate.

I can't stress enough, that before the car broke down, I was very happy with the rental for just over 5 months. I didn't understand how they could have such low rated reviews, when everything was going so well in my case. That all changed in a flash with the first incident with the car.

If you read the reviews on Hertz anywhere, you'll find the vast majority of their customers regret renting from them. Most of the bad reviews involve getting double charged, or getting charged weeks after a car had been turned back in.

I would STRONGLY RECOMMEND that anyone looking to rent a car, stay away from Hertz Car Rental.

I'm truly having the worst time dealing…

I'm truly having the worst time dealing with Hertz post-accident. They keep getting my information wrong and requesting things incorrectly (for example, they now claim that I rented the car through a third-party insurer when I do not have a third-party insurer). One of their employees will say one thing, another will say something completely different. They are incompetent. You'd think this process would be streamlined given that it is their literal day-in, day-out job. On top of not knowing anything, they also just refer any questions you have to other people (who also unsurprisingly, do not know anything). I still don't know what I could financially be liable for, despite paying for a $0 excess, as none of them can confirm that this applies wholly to my situation (which is an extremely straightforward and minor accident). Steer clear of them as a rental company.

SHIT COMPANY

they give a speed limit vehicle which is dangerous to drive on the freeway and charge me for nonsense cost. the payments system of the company is terrible because of the double time charge on my account. Overall this is the most stupid and stress company to deal with. Hope you guys could stay out of HERTZ

Price gouging

Rented a van from them, long waits at pickup and drop off because they run their locations on skeleton crews.

I knew i had driven on toll roads and would have to pay the tolls when they arrived.

However what i did not expect was hertz to slap on an opportunistic “toll administration fee” of an arbitrary $35

Congrats Hertz i will now actively avoid using your product in future.

Never hire a car with HERTZ

I hired a car for 11 days with a quote of 481 Euros but ended up paying 1140 euros!!!!!!

I extended my rental for 3 days and the price doubled because they changes the rate from 200 per week to 322 per week for the WHOLE RENTAL - not just the extra 3 days!

There were also a whole host of extra fees when hiring including fuel, service fees and VAT which are not apparent when you book.

When I contacted Hertz to complain and question this they said it's in their terms that the rental rates will change if you change the booking. But it's not clear when you are the customer.

I will never use Hertz again for the way they squeeze money out of you.

Left me stranded, over 100 kms from home!

My car had broken down, and while it's being repaired RACV will reimburse me for the cost of a hire car. I called Hertz and arranged to pick up a car just before they close as my car wouldn't be ready. I'm 61, Rating 1 driver, no black marks against my name of any kind. Gave enough ID to be able to get a bank loan, buy a car, or issue government documents but because I don't have a bill with my address on it Hertz will not hire me a car. If you haven't hired with them before, it's an extra $300 security deposit (total $500) and extra ID - i.e. Passport, Driver's Licence, Working With Children, and Medicare cards are not enough! I am currently doing long-term house-sitting, so use my parents' address as my permanent residence, therefore I don't have utility bills in my name. It's a ridiculous policy and I will never rent from them.

The staff were friendly, but inflexible. I have hired from Avis, Budget, Uber Carshare, Gecko, and Europcar - but apparently not Hertz before. I recommend that no one else hires from them either!

I pre-paid when I booked online to save but instead I was charged twice and they will not give my money back. I paid $197.55 when I booked online to save but then when I picked up the car I paid another $384. When I received the invoice, they charged me again $283.12 on the same rental agreement so I paid twice and they keep insisting it was the right invoice even though they could not explain the charges and saying 197.55 is for day 1 and 283.12 was for day 2, but their invoice said it's only $50.50 for daily rental charge. They are thieves and should not be allowed to operate as such. They are so quick to take your money but will not admit mistake.

Money stolen from my bank account

This company conducts itself in a dangerous and treacherous manner.
Hertz falsified a toll invoice for a road I had never even driven on. They were asked to escalate the matter to a manager but instead they literally just stole the money from my bank account and never let on.
I was never issued a receipt, demonstrating that they have acted in an underhand and completely dishonest manner - barefaced theft by someone using the appalling and made-up name of 'Juicy'.
There are governing bodies in Australia to deal with these sorts of dishonest companies and if you have had money stolen by Hertz you need to contact them - and the media.

How do you avoid tolls driving from Melbourne airport to the City??
Used to use Hertz every month for years (GOLD MEMBER) when I was working with no problems ..... now its all in the small print ... petrol; tolls; damage and cleaning... guess am a dumb pensioner now ???
