Not the experience I was hoping for this time.

I recently ordered my son’s yearbook and selected his current teacher from the list provided—only to later find out I had apparently chosen the wrong school year and school. The confusing part? His teacher was listed as an option, even though she teaches at the elementary school, not the primary school he attended last year. So I’m unsure how that even happened.

Thankfully, one of the yearbook moms caught the mistake and told me to call in to get it transferred to the correct school. When I did, I was told not only could they not transfer it, but they also refused to refund me.

As a single mom, that really doesn’t sit right with me. Sure, maybe it was my mistake—but if the system allowed me to choose a teacher from a different school, something about that process is broken.

I just expected a little more understanding and flexibility. Disappointing, to say the least.

Great customer service. This was my first year doing the yearbook for our school and I decided to make the switch to Treering. We got double the pages for the same price compared to Shutterfly, and the interface was navigable for a first timer. I designed the book in InDesign and dropped hires jpegs into the yearbook layout. Worked out perfectly.

As a quick aside—I teach a Yearbook Team, and our school has used several different yearbook production companies over the years, including Herff Jones, Walsworth, and most recently, Treering. While Treering initially presents itself as clean and simplistic, it unfortunately lacks some extremely basic functionality and exposes multiple glaring bugs and oversights during real-world use.

Here are just a few recurring frustrations my team and I encountered throughout the editing process:

- Zoom Issues: When opening a page in the editor, standard text sizes (11–12pt) appear incredibly small. Anything below 16pt becomes nearly unreadable unless zoomed in. Unfortunately, zooming requires manually adjusting a percentage dropdown—there’s no smooth scroll-to-zoom or shortcut functionality, which severely disrupts workflow and makes editing tedious.

- Extended Load Times: Even minor edits—like typing a single line of text—can result in noticeable lag. This delay adds up quickly when working across many pages or making multiple adjustments.

- Erratic Text Frame Resizing: Adjusting the left handle of a text box often causes the entire frame to behave unpredictably, stretching or shrinking from the opposite side. This makes layout alignment unnecessarily frustrating.

- Uneditable Off-Page Items: Elements (like text or graphics) that are accidentally moved beyond the bleed area become unclickable and unmovable. Unlike other platforms, Treering does not allow users to grab or recover off-page assets.

- "Ghost Locked" Pages: Pages sometimes remain locked even after a team member exits, occasionally for several minutes. This seems to be a server responsiveness issue, but it creates bottlenecks and confusion in collaborative environments.

- Thumbnails Stuck on “Updating Preview”: In spread view, some thumbnails show an “Updating Preview” spinner despite not being recently edited. This occasionally affects multiple spreads, leaving them inaccessible for no clear reason.

- Clunky Photo Organization: Moving photos between folders lacks drag-and-drop functionality, making what should be a simple task feel outdated and overly complicated.

- Confusing Portrait Flow Editing System: While portrait numbers can be adjusted, users have virtually no control over the layout structure beyond selecting a preset number of portraits to flow onto a page. Intuitively, one might expect that entering "portrait mode" in the page editor would allow for the creation and management of new folders. However, this process is unnecessarily confusing and unintuitive. Folder names for portrait flows are automatically dictated by the name of the page they’re placed on and cannot be edited manually—a limitation that was only clarified after a support call with a Treering representative, as it is not documented in any FAQ or official resource. Additionally, users cannot define the number of rows or columns, nor control the spacing between portraits and name labels. This often results in awkward gaps or misalignments between names and images.

- Missing Page Status Tracking: Walsworth offered a simple but powerful system to tag each spread with statuses like “Not Started,” “Started,” “Proof,” “Submitted,” and “Completed.” When I contacted Treering support to ask if anything similar existed, the only solution offered was to “lock” the page—unfortunately, this also blocks any further editing unless manually unlocked, which defeats the purpose for workflow tracking.

- No Shortcut Support for Text Formatting: Common text-editing shortcuts such as Ctrl+B (bold), Ctrl+I (italic), and Ctrl+U (underline) do not work within Treering's text editor. Users must manually highlight text and then click the corresponding formatting button in the toolbar. This adds unnecessary clicks to every edit and slows down the process for students used to standard keyboard workflows.

**As a side note, the Treering support staff has been incredibly helpful and generally easy to reach, with hold times rarely exceeding five minutes. That said, there were a few instances where the initial support representative was a non-native English speaker with a strong accent, which occasionally made communication difficult and led to some misunderstandings.

Bottom Line: While Treering may work for schools needing a basic, plug-and-play solution with a low learning curve, it is not well-suited for teams seeking detailed design control, collaborative efficiency, or consistent formatting. Many of its features feel underdeveloped or outright broken, making the editing process more frustrating than it should be—especially for students learning to lead and create.

The mobile website had major issues when customizing my child's pages. Once I thought they were completed it would add additional ones for me to buy (but not needed) to the point where my time was not worth the headache and deleted them all.Not to mention it never saved a thing so starting the process over and over was a frustration. I also tried on the laptop with the same issue of being unable to save the free pages without the buying additional ones like bait and switch tactic. Fast forward to we received her yearbook, but in it some random kids customized page. I'm happy at least his parents got to customize. Reached out to customer service to address the issues and got a generic message along with "helpful tips". no resolution and it seems no sense for change. So I'm NEVER ordering another yearbook from this company. My child will do without it.

This website is absolute trash on mobile. Every time I try to upload photos, it refreshes and loses all my work. It shows the photos that have been uploaded in my account but then will not let me select them. It also has an optional section you can skip but doesn’t have a skip button. This whole process is the worst.

When I placed my order for the second year in a row, the customer service rep I spoke with last year reached out again to say thanks. I really appreciate the service.

Treering allowed my small international school to create their first ever yearbook the year my older brother graduated. I got to be in charge of it as a sophomore in high school, and I loved it. Treering provides so many great design resources and the software is easy to use, so each year our yearbooks arrived and then we received orders for more.
Just incredible company to work with, and their resources allowed me to build experience attain my current role of web designer. Went to write this review because I'm just super thankful. Elite company.
