Terrible customer service and completely avoidable food waste

Really disappointing experience with Planthood, and ultimately one that has caused us to cancel our subscription.

We received notification of an upcoming delivery shortly before going away for 10 days. As soon as we realised the delivery would arrive while we were away, we contacted Planthood and asked them to cancel it, postpone it or redirect it.

Their response was essentially that we were too late because the order had already passed their internal production cut-off.

We explained that nobody would be at the property for 10 days and that a box of fresh, perishable food would therefore be left outside and ultimately thrown away. Despite this, Planthood said they could not cancel the delivery, redirect it, stop it or refund us. Their suggested solution was that we find a neighbour, friend or relative to take the box instead.

What makes this particularly frustrating is the notification process. If customers need to make changes before a strict production cut-off, surely the reminder should arrive with enough time to actually do something about it. A notification that comes too late to make changes is of very little practical use.

I appreciate businesses have production schedules and cut-off times. What I don’t accept is that there appears to be absolutely no flexibility or escalation process when a customer contacts you promptly and explains that the result will be an entire box of fresh food being left outside for 10 days and going to waste.

After several emails, we were repeatedly given essentially the same explanation rather than a practical solution.

We have now cancelled our subscription. To their credit, Planthood did action the cancellation promptly and confirmed that no further payments or deliveries will be made.

It’s a real shame because we wanted to support the service, but the combination of a poorly timed notification process, inflexible customer service and completely unnecessary food waste has put us off using Planthood again.

Hopefully they review their processes so another customer doesn’t end up in the same situation.

Absolutely incredible meals and honestly the best customer service I’ve ever experienced!

The food is delicious, healthy and full of variety. We paused our Planthood subscription for a while, but we missed the meals so much that we’ve now subscribed again. We’ve tried several meal-plan companies, and Planthood has easily been the best.

Although the meals are plant-based, they’re also very versatile. Because we sometimes struggle to eat enough protein throughout the day, we occasionally add some chicken or another protein alongside the recipes. Everything works beautifully together and still tastes amazing.

Their customer service is exceptional, always helpful, prompt and genuinely there whenever you need them. I’ve never experienced another company that takes such good care of its customers.

I’ve seen a few reviews mentioning delayed deliveries, but it’s important to remember that this is down to the courier companies, not Planthood. Planthood always dispatches the boxes on time and does everything it can to help if a courier causes a delay.

Amazing food, delicious recipes and truly outstanding customer service. I couldn’t recommend Planthood highly enough!

These meals give me a warmth and satiety. It is gourmet food in my home kitchen, and the passion for the recipes they show in the descriptions and instructions is contagious. I make every meal a special event now. They just encourage it with how they talk about food in their write ups of each recipe. You can tell they have put their creative energy and love for sharing food into these meal kits.

Having decided to quit animal agriculture products, I needed something delicious for both myself and my husband, which would allow him the pleasure of food while compromising on eating less meat. We both really enjoy every meal, and he never complains that he misses meat or dairy at all. The portion is always ample. We eat it every bite of it too as its just so good.

I get a glow from these gorgeous sauces and the ingredients that I get to prep to put it all together. We are trying foods from around the world, and many are new experiences that I haven’t had the nerve to cook for myself yet. So I feel like I am actually having a culinary learning experience.

I am dreaming of a recipe book by Planthood, or courses, so I can learn to make the sauces from scratch! There is something special about them.

And all the packaging is recyclable! If you want meal kits with a thorough sustainability effort, this is the best. No plastic pots, all recyclable bags.

The choice each week is always a delight. Cannot wait for our next batch.

REPLY TO PLANTHOOD ANSWER:
Your answer still doesn’t help at all, and is clearly not customer focused! You are basically covering yourselves up by using blurry options for rescheduling the delivery. I’m sorry but when you write in an email that DPD will send me tracking updates and I can postpone the delivery, it’s OBVIOUS and logic that I get in touch with the courrier directly to rearrange the delivery. Why would I contact you to rearrange the delivery ? You would need to contact DPD anyways right ? So why complicating things ? The main issue is that you should provide at least a better cooling system in case the delivery is postponed by 12 hours. And I am not the only person who’s been writing this type of review ! You just don’t want to listen to your customers and you didn’t even want to refund me the 40£ for the food I have lost, I’m sorry but keep explaining yourself as much as you want. You are not providing a great customer service.

ORIGINAL MESSAGE:
Be careful !!! This company uses a delivery service that will NOT keep your items fresh if you happen to not be able to get the delivery on the day that was originally planned. I had the delivery scheduled for a Thursday and was worried about the time as I work in town until 6pm. I emailed Planthood expressing my concerns and they said I could always reschedule the delivery at a later date but they NEVER mentioned that when a delivery is delayed, there is a risk that the cooling packs will no longer remain frozen or that the box may arrive warmer than expected. In my case, the food arrived WARM !!! With the heatwave in Scotland, no wonder why! I was shocked, Planthood said they couldn’t refund me anything and I lost all the food. 4 meals worth ! This is an outrage. Don’t use this company.

It’s hard nowadays to get something so right but Planthood have. Every time I make a meal I make a mental note to send an e mail to congratulate them. From an ethical angle as a vegan who doesn’t like cooking this is like a gift from heaven. Just the right prep time, incredible tastes and super organised. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!!!! You deserve everything for doing this so well. A non vegan friend purchased me a voucher because she was so impressed by the meals. I was instantly hooked. In a world of ignorant comments about veganism this will show the way to ending the cruelty of the meat and dairy industry. I am in awe of your business model and passion. 👍🏼🙏🏻😍

The meals by planthood are made to an incredibly high standard - they are varied, exciting and very quick to cook. We are so busy and cooking delicious high protein vegan food is a challenge, this has revolutionised meal time and means we have much less food waste.

I have been using planthood for quite a while and I really like their recipes and the quality of the products. The recipes are quite original, with a lot of Asian and middle eastern options, all super tasty. It is easy to spot recipes with higher protein content, which has been useful to help me getting closer to my daily target.

Every dish we have had from this company has been like a high end restaurant meal. Preparation and cooking time vary, but most take no longer than half an hour and many take considerably less. The excellent pre-prepared sauces are exquisite. Flavours have always been amazing and the fact these are also very healthy, well balanced meals as well means there is nothing to fault. The price is certainly reasonable.

Planthood should rename itself “Planthood SAUCE Company”.

After trying their service, I feel deceived- the only thing they actually cook is the SAUCES. I got several huge bags with “handmade with love sauces”
Everything else is simply supermarket ingredients: canned Suma beans, raw vegetables, herbs and salad leaves that still need washing, chopping and cooking.

The website says things like “we can’t wait to cook for you” and gives the impression that you’ll receive prepared meals that just need reheating. Completely misleading.

In reality, they cook the sauces. That’s it. Everything else is exactly what I could have bought myself from a supermarket for less money

If this is a meal kit service, it should be marketed as a meal kit. I paid expecting the convenience of ready-made meals, not for a box with expensive raw vegetables, cans, and sauces.

I’ve been doing planthood for about a year and a half now, still going strong. It’s the tastiest, healthiest, freshest, easiest meals you’re going to cook for yourself without all the effort of planning, shopping, and being robbed by greedy supermarkets. Great value and variety. I love planthood and look forward to it every week. Thanks team I really appreciate your hard work

Don't usually write trust pilot reviews but wow this has been a game changer. Delicious and varied meals. Can see macros easily. Fun to cook and quick. Some meals are next level and others are just okay but the convenience, freshness and health aspects all make it worth the odd average dish. Only 2 downsides I've found - ingredients being a little worse for wear by time I get to cook them if not til end of the week, sometimes several steps but I tend to just simplify. So easy to skip deliveries and amend orders too. Big big fan!

As a lone parent household, Planthood has been such a blessing. I've been ordering around half of my/our weekly meals. Most of all it eases the decision-making and creative overwhelm of conjuring meals and still *feels* like home-cooking. The meals are simple to prepare, delicious and inventive. I've definitely cut food waste, improved nutrition and meal variety and been filled up with practical ideas for meals that I can learn to prepare from scratch myself (cashew labneh is a game-changer!) Can't recommend highly enough. And all packaged thoughtfully and with minimum waste.

The menus are tasty and easy to prepare.

This has made our life so much easier and healthier. My husband is a meat-eating food diva but the cooking falls to me and I’m not good at it and don’t enjoy it. Now we’re eating plants 4x nights a week and the flavours and presentation i can produce with planthood is always on a level way beyond what could do before. He’s reassured by how much protein is in every serving- So everyone’s happy. No precious brain energy used on mundane menu planning and food shopping. The effort I have to give is utilised where it matters - 20-30 mins in the kitchen cooking and washing two pans after. Happy to not be cooking meat and also improving everyone’s gut microbiome with all the plants. Thought it was expensive but in reality we’ve saving loads as not constantly popping to Waitrose to buy 2 things then coming out having spent £40.

I was so surprised at how easy and amazingly delicious the meals are. The healthy ingredients and lack of processed foods are a massive bonus and make having a healthy lifestyle so much easier. I absolutely love these boxes!

So disappointed. We love the boxes but after a year + of good service we've now received 2nd box in a row a full day late with food at room temperature. Icepacks were completely melted not even cool anymore. Going in bin. If your courier is incapable of delivering same day and well within the life of the cool packs its pointless to continue with our order which is sad given the otherwise high quality.

The dishes are absolutely incredible. I used hello fresh for years but it’s not a patch on this. It feels like eating at a restaurant every night and super easy to make.

Really tasty food that’s good for you! Easy to prepare with everything you need delivered. The customer service is outstanding and there’s great flexibility to skip or amend an order when you need to. Excellent all round.

Excellent quality meals. Easy to prepare and they taste like a restaurant meal. We are so impressed. Love that the recipes change every week. So easy to prepare too. I highly recommend.
