OS maps app used to be great, not now

Poor connectivity.
I used to be able to use the os app in all sorts of obscure places without having to download/save a map in advance (not all walks are planned in advance).
The app no longer seems capable of working without an Internet connection - rendering it almost useless!
Will cancel subscription when next renewal is due (though I read that this is made unreasonably difficult).

OS maps garbage on PC
Works ok on phone, if you have a signal. On the pc it is a waste of space, constanlty crashes my browser within seconds of using it - to many features poorly implemented
At one time in the past it used to work good on the pc - now it is garbage.

OS Map App
I have used OS Maps for the past couple of years and while some of the features are good, others leave something to be desired. A particular frustration is that some of the maps are outdated, with routes that were diverted many years ago still shown. Compared with Memory Map, I find the OS menus difficult to use, as they are not arranged in a simple way and make it hard to find your way through. A menu should be easy to flip through without having to search for options. The map view is also partly obscured by the dialog information screen, which detracts from ease of use. It is a useful app in many respects, but I feel it could be improved both in accuracy and usability.
Rubbish app
Poor layout, poor instructions, cannot access downloaded maps without turning off data.
Wasted so much time on this.
Terrible App
Terrible App, a real rip off. Badly designed, complex to operate, and it breaks down.
A really bad buy.
A phone call solved my problem
I have a collection of eleven paper OS Explorer maps with the blue sticker that I’d downloaded to the OS Maps app on my iPhone. Recently they disappeared, other than in the basic maps format. Despite deleting and reloading the app, as suggested online, I couldn’t recover them and the only solution being offered was to download Premium Maps at a cost of £34.99 per annum. I phoned the OS help line and (after quite a long wait) an operative answered and, basically, talked me through the steps needed to recover the maps shown on my account. The reason for posting this review is that a lot of negative experiences are posted on the OS page, and I thought it only right to record my own very positive experience, with an operative who couldn’t have been more patient
and helpful.
Over complicated web site
Over complicated web site took me ages just too order a simple paper map!
poor customer service
Contacted customer services by email. They are very slow to respond, auto-response saying they will respond within 5 days. The app says "invalid gpx file" when I try to download a route created in OS maps from an email. Customer Services does not appear to know why this is happening, and appear to have given up.
I have discovered that you have to download the file to your phone and open it from the downloads folder, something I do not have to do from other apps.
Truly awful
Truly awful. Even if you download a map the only way to get that map to load is by turning off your mobile data. Obviously you may want mobile data on for other apps. Even then it can fail to load and you are left staring at a blank screen wondering why you are paying for this. This has been a known bug that I have reported but OS have deemed it not important enough to fix.
Who is in charge of OS maps?
I have had a sub to OS map for several years. Only interest is digital version of papers maps and creating routes from time to time. However my impression is that the site has become obsessed with marketing over technical with ads and appearance of routes I never asked about. Plus account validation was always less than satisfactory.Reading other recent comments suggests I am not alone.Yet another gov.uk agency devaluing their brand and reputation.
Very challenging to cancel
I have - for a few more weeks at least - an OS maps digital subscription.
I only really use it 2 or 3 times a year when I go on walking holidays and decided the subscription fee was a little too high for such limited use.
I've downloaded Memory Map and paid a one off fee for an OS map. At least I won't need to pay renewal fees and by and large OS maps don't change much for remote areas.
I went to cancel the subscription via my online account and it was made impossible due to their poor interface - the cancel link was hidden by the advert giving reasons to keep the subscription.
I have a friend with a huge 40 inch monitor and logging on via that the cancel link was just about visible.
Sneaky way of stopping you cancelling.
I did report the issue to OS maps but they never responded and I guess never will resolve it. My guess is people will just give up and keep paying the fees.
Rather dishonest though. A pity as the online map is fine, its just I don't use it often enough to justify subscription fees.
Another useless monthly subscription
I bought a paper map with a free digital version. Fantastic. I download the app and installed the map and set off. Now why would I need a map? Probably because I am somewhere in the middle of nowhere. And when I got there I found that you had to be on line to use the digital map. Someone go that wrong. Good fone signal in the middle of nowhere? That's why I need a map silly. One that works off line.
I wrote to osmaps pointing this out and they agreed it was a bit of an own goal for the app and they were working on an update.
The update? Pay £35 a year. Every year. Just to make your already purchased digital map work on your fone when you don't have Internet.
Wrong choice guys. Another own goal. Sorry but you can't get paid twice for the same thing.
OS maps update misery
OS maps update has cluttered a perfectly decent route making system with unwanted suggestions and made it a nightmare to navigate. I’ve stopped using it.
Who are the developers? Please ditch them and try again
A good tool for mapping UK hiking routes
I would give the OS Maps app a 5 star review if it weren't for two improvements that I think are needed to create a better experience for users.
However, I would like to thank the Customer Service staff for all their helpful suggestions to users first using the OS Maps app. They are always courteous and extremely helpful in trying to resolve queries and glitches. And they take seriously the OS goal - Think Customer.
However, it is the developers to whom I’m making this appeal for improvements in the UI of the app. There are two suggestions I’d like them to make;
- firstly) allow the app recording data to be disabled so that the app can be used for navigational purposes only. When I’ve created and downloaded a route, I don’t need to know the stats (Kcal used, duration, pace etc) because I’ve already created the route and know the duration and likely pace. I want to follow the downloaded route in the app purely for navigation. (as I could do if I were using say Organic Maps). If the OS Maps app is recording a route, it’s depleting the battery charge, which I’m trying to use sparingly by running the smartphone in airplane mode.
- secondly) enable a downloaded route to be synced to a downloaded offline map (again, as I could do with Organic Maps. As opposed to the current method, which I understand is that the route has to be created after the offline map has been downloaded, which seems perverse.
I hope these suggestions are helpful and I can discuss further if OS wish to PM me.

UNSTABLE - Customer Services useless
UNSTABLE. On computer, it frequently won't save or upload GPX routes. On the Ap it drops you out of a route, does not log waypoints or stops and starts while recording an activity. Website WHOLLY false--they never show any reported downtime! No contact email - just a phone number and a bot during office hours. HOW MANY HIKERS WALK IN OFFICE HOURS??? Get your act together, OS Maps -- We are paying for this!
