Night Zookeeper is a London-based children’s brand comprising of an online learning program, a book series and a TV mini-series. All of our products centre around the magical world of the “Night Zoo”. Our aim is to make learning fantastically fun for children aged 6 to 12 years old, and unlock their creativity in the process. Our reading and writing program has been used by over 1 million children worldwide.
Night Zookeeper was founded in 2012 by Joshua Davidson and Paul Hutson. Our e-learning product was originally launched in November 2012 as a creative drawing iOS app for kids, which went on to be recognised as one of the 50 best apps of 2013 by The Observer and The Guardian.
In 2014, we revamped the app into a web version which included more extensive writing elements, a dashboard for monitoring progress and personalised feedback from tutors. Over 1 billion words have been written by children on the site. Night Zookeeper is also used in schools by teachers worldwide in an effort to harness the power of digital learning in the classroom.
Throughout the pandemic, Night Zookeeper was able to act as a useful resource for families around the world to keep their children learning as schools were forced to close and remote learning took hold.
As of 2024, our program is used by thousands of children in several countries as a way to improve their reading and writing skills in a fantastically fun way, whether as part of a homeschool, in the classroom, as a supplementary resource, or simply a productive form of screen-time.

I have contacted support and sent them everything they asked for, including multiple screenshots over weeks showing glitches and explaining what was happening. Eventually, they just stopped responding.
I understand they aim to encourage creativity and build confidence with positive feedback, which is great. However, the “simple actionable guidance” is ridiculous and not age-appropriate. If my 11-year-old child submits writing with spelling and grammar errors, I would expect the “tutors” to have him correct all of those errors, not just one or two missed commas, while ignoring everything else. That’s almost more problematic because he’s not learning from his mistakes, as they are neither acknowledged nor addressed. He then believes he has done these parts correctly, which reinforces incorrect spelling or grammar, making it harder to unlearn.

Excellent Customer Service
I had some issues where I lost access to the platform, and was unable to cancel when I needed to. Reaching out via their Customer Services email resolved the matter completely in 24 hours. The responsiveness and helpfulness of their Customer Service team was excellent.

Probably won't renew
We have been using this for 9 months and I really like the graphics, quests, and how it looks. What I dont like is that there is no curriculum that goes in order. My son just picks whatever game, quest, lesson, etc and nothing matches. For instance, if he does a lesson on spelling words, the next activities after that should match the lesson's subject, but it doesn't. You can assign things in order but it takes hours to figure out what lesson goes with what writing assignment, and the quests are random and don't align with any lesson he does. Its all over the place. Support via email is minimal. We have issues with our quests randomly jumping to the next age group without me changing it and support had no answer. They just nicely let you down and hope you don't message back. I will probably not renew for the next year.

Our program offers both choice-based learning options such as the games/challenges/lessons, and a structured curriculum (Quests). We know that some children learn better with creative freedom, while others benefit from more structure in their learning which is why we launched Quests last year. Quests guides children through a full learning curriculum on a structured path, and you are able to see what topics they have covered and yet to cover from your parent dashboard.

Engaging for a reluctant writer
We are loving Night Zookeeper! My child generally avoids all writing assignments, but this was the first curriculum that had him engaged and excited to learn! They like that writing feels like a game. Even the worksheets are engaging and thoughtfully designed. I love that it’s fully student-paced, giving me more time as a homeschool parent to be present with my child during lessons, instead of balancing planning, assigning and grading work. The graphics and art style are so fun as well! We’d love more subjects if any apps were developed in the future!

Great for SEND and Home Ed
Night Zookeeper has been such a brilliant part of our home education journey and I honestly can’t recommend it enough.
Both of my children (age 11 and 9) are autistic and dyslexic, so finding something that genuinely supports their learning without causing overwhelm or frustration can be really difficult. Night Zookeeper has made a huge difference for us.
It has helped them build confidence with writing, spelling, reading and creativity in a way that feels fun rather than pressured. The game-style format keeps them engaged, and because it feels playful and imaginative, they’re much more willing to have a go and work independently.
One of the biggest improvements I’ve seen is in their confidence. Writing used to feel like a struggle, but Night Zookeeper has helped make it feel accessible and enjoyable. They are far more willing to express their ideas, try new vocabulary, and complete activities without the resistance we’ve experienced with more traditional methods.
As a home educating parent, I also really value having a resource that supports literacy in a flexible, low-pressure way that works with their individual needs. It fits beautifully into our home ed routine and gives them a sense of achievement while still meeting real educational goals.
For any SEND or home educating families, especially those supporting dyslexic or autistic children, Night Zookeeper has been a genuinely positive and helpful tool in our home.

Amazing program…
My reluctant writers are now writing 200-300 words on a daily basis. They are learning English skills and how to 'show, not tell' when describing the animals. I would like you to add a way to describe other things like the battles or the dens.

Writing Gamechanger

If you are considering this, you will not regret it!
My children are homeschooled, and we use The Night Zookeeper as a supplement to our English language arts curriculum. It fully engages my 9-year-old. It’s packed with learning material; even the games and TV series lead to education. It can be very personalized as well. I highly recommend if you have an unconventional learner. Most importantly for me, it fosters confidence in writing. Even though my children are homeschooled, they can still earn certificates for achievements! Educators give feedback to students on their writing, and it’s always helpful and uplifting. It’s very visually appealing as well, so my 5-year-old is interested in participating too. It is well worth the investment! Not to mention the client support is stellar! They are very polite and helpful! 10 stars!

We really love this program because it is fun and still actually teaches and advances.
