Unfortunately, feel this company cons you into buying more hours than you need or want. Agreed to so many hours, but they have taken the same amount of bank again, then trying to charge me similar to cancel. Received a few hours of work for a huge cost. Certainly not the £7.50 per hour was meant to be!
Stated to them the work was not up to standard & very unprofessional, but this did not seem to matter or did they care. Seems it's all about just taking you for as much money as humanly possible. No customer service skills what so ever. Maybe they should re-train themselves!!

I'm Jamie C, and I have been teaching piano to beginners via My Pocket Skill for around two years. I started at Level 1, but after some repeat bookings and positive feedback, this went to Level 6, meaning I could decide my own price. It has been a very positive experience, and I have kept my rate competitive, and haven’t overburdened myself, balancing it alongside my schoolwork. I teach on-line, and this works very well for students.

Top tips for young people who are new to MPS:

Levels. As a new tutor, you are charging a small amount. This gives you time to learn your skills, people will cut you slack; think of it as a mini-apprenticeship - just because you are a great pianist, doesn't mean that you are a great teacher or communicator (yet). MPS will move your level and earnings up when applicable – it’s up to you if you want to price at that new level, or still charge a lower rate. Remember, clients are paying a platform fee on top of what you receive. If you are ‘levelled up’ – congratulations, clients clearly like you, you’ve earned it.

Be proactive. There is a lot of competition out there for your service, so be proactive in contacting people for new business. Focus on the recent ‘Requesting’ listings – there is little point in contacting somebody who posted a request two years ago.

Be realistic. Don’t offer to teach outside your comfort/skill zone. For example, I struggle to teach piano to a 4-year-old, so I don’t waste clients' time or expectations by applying for those.

Feedback. You can message people to ask if the lesson met their expectations. If someone is happy, ask them for a review. If they’re a great student, leave them a review. You’re probably teaching remotely, so occasionally message the student with feedback on their progress. Keeping your current clients on-board is easier than finding new ones.

Communicate clearly. When somebody books you, respond quickly, with the agreed date and time. If they have booked multiple lessons, send a message detailing the dates and times.

Be flexible (sometimes). If you book an Uber, and don’t turn up, they will still charge you. So, if somebody cancels you last-minute, or is a no-show, they still pay. Just because you are young, doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be valued. But, if they are a regular (or have scope to be), then it’s good business to reschedule so that they don’t lose the fee. There may be times when YOU need to reschedule, so it goes both ways. And you are teaching other young people; maybe they’ve had a tough day or a big homework-load, and just aren’t engaging – be patient with them.

Be professional. Test your computer before the lesson, check that the wi-fi signal is good (run a speed-test via Google), camera and sound working. Ensure you are on the same link. If either of you have tech problems, try and log out and back in again. Write your notes immediately afterwards so that you can start the subsequent lessons at the right point. Especially important when your student base grows.

Reflect. After a few months, take time to reflect on what you have learned; it’s not just about the money. You will have learned more about money management, savings goals, time management, public speaking, empathy, communication, marketing, and professionalism. All are skills that will serve you well as you get older.

Before Mypocketskill I struggled to find anywhere decent to advertise my tutoring, and people tend to take young people on more popular sites less seriously. Here though I feel it was more designed for people like me with less experience than a qualified teacher, but plenty of experience in the field in which I'm tutoring (I'm a maths undergraduate tutoring GCSE maths), and I was finally recognised by people who's kids needed some additional support. I like the levelling up / pricing feature, so nobody can undervalue (or overvalue) their services, meaning nobody is being ripped off from either side. Support is usually very quick too. Not really any complaints.

Initially slightly skeptical, but 9 months in my little girl is still having music lessons with the same tutor. All online, flexible and personally tailored. I love that it supports young people into work in areas that they are passionate about.

I've been a part of this platform for the past few month's and although I haven't had too much success on it the admins and staff have been nothing but helpful in promoting my services and even put me in an ambassador role to help my page get more views and attention.

Used mypocketskill to find an affordable photographer for my dads birthday party. Great website for finding photographers; very easy to search via location and there are clear prices against each profile and reviews from previous bookings.
You can also use the website to find other skilled people, not just photographers.

It was a straightforward process and I like how safeguarding is paramount in all their dealings. It’s a really cool concept that works for either sides as irs a way to gain more experience/ build up your portfolio and offer your services too.

I’m thinking of telling my sister about the website too as she’s in the age bracket / Gen Z.
