I would highly recommend to NEVER in your life use M&T BANK bank. The tellers can’t tell you the accurate balance in your accounts, nor can they tell the difference between your checking and savings account. And if you plan to go to the bank on your lunch break prepare for to take your entire break. Yes that’s right on entire 60 minutes. You will be waiting in line with 3 to 5 tellers sitting with nothing to do and helping no customers, but they still make you wait in line for 15 minutes. I just switched over to Chase bank and the transaction that I did if I were to do it at MNT would’ve took in a whole 45 minutes. I walked in to chase bank and walked out within seven minutes and got done what I needed to get done if you have an M&T BANK account, close it and leave that bank as soon as you possibly can You will thank me later. Just to give you in idea how long I had that bank account… it was peoples bank and I was 16 years old I am now 35.
Unauthorized Block
I emailed M&T re a charge I didn't recognize. Without any authorization M&T blocked mt debit card. No one in customer service could manage the situation and unblock my card. This was an unauthorized block. NO notice! I'm working on changing to another bank.

Wish that I could give this “bank” a negative review!!! They are untrustworthy, at best. My mortgage and home equity line was sold to these creeps. They sent a refund check along with my mortgage statement. I did not notice as I paid online. After I opened the letter and saw the check that had expired I contacted them. Over two years later still no refund forthcoming. A lot of run around stating that it was likely in a state run holding for me. State says no. Came home from 5 months caring for an elderly family member and my homeowners insurance had not been paid before the due date but was paid by me before the deadline for payment, and it NEVER lapsed. They charged me big time for insurance I was already paying for. They will steal from you. Stay away! Worst bank that I have ever dealt with. Hateful bank.
poor service and fake reporting
Guess there was a mix up at my bank .I always pay in advance ,until feb 24 .I have been past due for the last 9 months ,but only 26 to 28 days ( thinking paying in advance).I was never notified by the bank ,text ,email ,phone call letter ..nothing for 9 months that my account was past due .I got a alert from my bank stating a new past due account posted to my credit ...What ??? I still have recieved no notice of my account from M & T about being past due .I called explained mix up and they refuse to take late payment off my credit .Main you ,this account has never been past due or even close ,I should have been notified in JUNE 2023 ,but nothing from M & T .I should been notified they were going to report me before then did !!
M&T deliverating posted misleading deceptive post
A few months after I retired, I received $40,000 annuities from my deferred drop/retirement plan. I got the check and promptly took it to M&T Bank for deposit. I am not sure why I was sent to "management" for this deposit but I was.Anyway, after much ado, I mistakenly deposited this amount to my checking instead of savings. But all seemed well. A few months later while reviewing the state of my account , I noticed that the description of my deposit transaction went from "Check from XXXXTransfers LL.C deposit $40,000 to simply "Trust". I came into the bank to ask why and they lied and told me it was customary to use that deposit phrase( then why didn't they do that in the FIRST place. At that time I had no hard qualms about it and continued my banking experience with M&T. Then I got the shock of my life while yet reviewing my statement again. his time the transaction change to "simply "Deposit" $40,000. Shocked I wrote and phone bank and they admitted that the source of the funds was from the Transfer LLC but they could NOT change the description/transaction that simply stated "Deposit". Of course this makes me look like I deposited forty thousand dollars in cash! I argued and argued and finally report to CFPB who notified MT. But they rolled over and just said it was correctly identified! I am not sure where else to go because this looks intentionally done! Not sure of legal ramifications( deliberately misleading post)? At any rate this is the worse banking experience I ever had . People are saying what is there to be upset over?
M & T Bank Corruption
Corrupt bank CEO and employees are Still pursuing the Taking of my home of 24 years ~ NOT for lack of monthly payments..., But for a ' side charge ', that could not be substantiated by anyone there at the bank ! They do this OFTEN to people! $65+ million in Mortgage Frauds!!!!!!

I wish I lived where Miguel (below review) lives. I've experienced some very good customer service, but more horrendous customer service mostly from one individual the manager apparently won't reign in. The manager, nice when cornered, does everything in his power to avoid contact/work. Little to no follow up to concerns, complaints, issues unless....cornered. Unfortunately, on line CS provided completely bogus information as well while other on line CS clarified with facts. App and set up can is also touch and go. Just a massive unnecessary headache I wish I never walked into. These comments reflect at least a dozen experiences over the past year.
Won't correct escrow overcharging elderly people
My parent's mortgage was sold to M&T. The tax office forgot to file my parent's over 65 and homestead exemptions (they admit they had the paperwork for months and it didn't get entered). My elderly handicapped parents jumped through every hoop to get that resolved before the tax bill was due. M&T ignored that it was resolved and paid the taxes in full from the out of date amount prior to exemptions, raising my parent's escrow payment almost $400. My parents are in their 70's and 80's and on a fixed income and cannot make another $400. My mom has called the bank and tax office repeatedly for months because all the bank has to do is fill out the refund form from the tax office website to refund the overpayment. The tax office tells us no one has filed for the refund yet. M&T lies to her and tells her they check every 3 days and haven't been able to file for it yet. My mom has just started chemo and is sitting here crying this morning after being lied to again and trying to figure out how we're going to come up with this extra money again and looking at claiming bankruptcy.

Predatory Banking Practice, Avoid & Run
I have had no say in my dealing with M&T bank when my mortgage from People's Bank was sold to them.
1. They lost my mortgage information in the transfer charging me double mortgage for months without rectifying until I escalated the case after numerous attempts to resolve it.
2. One cannot update address online and requires one to call to have an agent manually do it. I did this multiple time but as of my 3/1/2024 statement my address remained unchanged.
3. Since they did not update my address, the letters they supposedly sent to document proof of insurance did not reach me. Ironically, they were in receipt of these documents as my insurance company had already sent these documents.
4. They decided to charge me about $8000 for insurance coverage for 3 years claiming there was no proof of insurance. This was proven to be false by documentation provided by my insurance company.
5. I re-submitted proof of insurance numerous times and called the insurance teams multiple time spending over 20 hours of my time to get this addressed. The first time I called they told me they had not reviewed my insurance policy thoroughly and will need to re-review to determine if I should be charged. Yet they were charging me already. Each time they would reject an arbitrary reason provided and no one could inform what was the missing information required.
6. Escrow analysis is disaster. A 5-year-old has more competent math skills than their team.
I foresee a class action lawsuit in their future. This is the most incompetent, predatory, inhumane and unethical bank I have had the misfortune of have to deal with. I take comfort that I am selling my home so I will not have to deal with them much longer. If you have a choice, please choose any other bank. Even if they had the best rates I would not voluntarily subject myself to this bank.
Terrible front line customer service in…
Terrible front line customer service in the escrow department. I was transferred to someone else (not by my request) when this initial rep became belligerent with me after about 30 seconds, cutting me off, talking over me, etc.
To be fair, the person I was trans6974ferred to was very helpful but unfortunately, an impression was made.
NEVER OPEN AN ACCOUNT WITH M&T!
I wish I had NEVER opened an account with M&T. I have had accounts with dozens of banks and credit unions, but my experience with M&T was BY FAR the WORST of them all. M&T acted extremely unprofessionally, locking my account for no reason, denying transactions even though I had evidence of those transactions, forcing me to go to a local branch several times, and being completely opaque with my account security.
I opened an account with M&T online one day. The next day, M&T locked my account. I called and got it unlocked. Two days after that, M&T locked my account again. Instead of unlocking it, M&T made me go into the branch, which I could not do until after Christmas, to get it unlocked (thanks for ruining my holiday with anxiety). The evening of the day I went into the branch and unlocked the account, I received a phone call from the branch that M&T needed to close my account, all while external transfers were still pending! A short while later, the branch called me back and said M&T did not need to close my account. Later that evening, M&T locked my account yet again. Customer service said they could not tell me the reason it was locked, and that I had to go into a branch again. The next day, I went into the branch, the agent called about my account, but then told me that my account was frozen and under review. She could not tell me why or for how long it would be frozen. This was after I had transferred thousands of dollars to my new account. I called the Fraud Department when I got home, but they also told me they could not give me any information on what was going on.
When M&T asked me to fill out a survey about my experience opening an account with them, I explained everything. Instead of an apology, they only sent me a generic response inviting me to contact them with any concerns. Pathetic.
M&T, how about you don't lock people's accounts for no reason and actually keep records of transactions that your customers make?
These are the most incompetent, unprofessional, and stupid people in the banking business I have ever encountered. I would advise NO ONE to ever open any account with M&T Bank!

Horrible. never seen at this level
1- Account gets locked as notification never comes.
2- For zelle ,had to call fraud dept and got enabled finally after more than 60 minutes on call.
3 - Bank to bank transfer is also blocked. guess what. another 60 minutes on call.
4 - zelle got enabled for few days , just to be locked again and same process need to be repeated for every action on website .
5 - wait time is never less than 30 minutes
6- customer service does not know how to add mobile number on profile that got deleted mysteriously. ticket created with no SLA .
7 - had to go to branch for ID verification after uploading driving license via provided link and getting success message.
This bank is failure at so many levels. either shut down app and website so we have no false expectation or make it work for atleast few consistent days

From out of nowhere and for no damn reason, both my accounts were cut off by these buffoons! As of this writing, I have a date to meet and these clowns are about to ruin everything and I am not getting any answers! These bozos are telling me that I have to wait 6 to 9 days for my money, of which I said I do not have that kind of time! In one ear, out the other! Somebody is gonna get held accountable and I am gonna dare anybody in corporate to come run their mouth toward me, I am denouncing M & T as of right now and the next step is a formal complaint to Attorney General William Tong, as if he doesn't have enough headaches from these knuckleheads!
Use anybody else
I had no choice but to go through this lender as I was attempting an FHA assumable loan that the original buyer had purchased through this mickey mouse outfit. Patrick Santora and his staff were highly inattentive throughout the process. It was difficult to get him on the phone and he acted like I was wasting his time when I did speak to him.
After 45 days of not being able to even obtain a pre qual (yes you read that right) the sellers and I agreed to mutually cancel the contract and move on. Then I get a letter the next week claiming I was denied credit due to a collection that was illegitimate and literally had already fallen off my credit report during this lengthy process due to how old it was. This is after we submitted paperwork stating the deal was canceled and I have an 814 FICO. I can't think of a worse lending experience. Please use anybody else in this time when mortgage originators need your business more than ever.
M&T Bank is a joke
M&T Bank is a joke. There is no due diligence on fraud protection. Unable to verify if a business providing their ACH has any validity. Other banks will verify to confirm that I am paying the correct business entity and that what was provided to me was not fraud. M&T need to figure out how agents should respond and prevent fraud. I was not asking agent to verify account #, but rather the business name matching the account. Agent was unable to assist. I will ensure to steer clients from banking with M&T.
Inappropriate Handling of Funds
Do not open an account with M & T Bank. Yesterday, I deposited a check, and the branch said a 1 day hold. No problem. Woke up today. The money was there. I paid bills, transferred money, and went to store #1. All good. Went to store #2- card declined. Impossible. Tried again, declined. Must be the chip, I'll tap. Declined. Step aside to call the Bank. Turns out they randomly decided it shouldn't have been cleared & put an additional hold on the money until Tuesday. Account overdrawn, and I'm going to have a problem with bills. My husband can't transfer me money, because the overdrawn funds will drain it. Supervisor on the phone, Emily, tells me to go to the Branch because they can overturn it. LIE!!!!!!! Justin at the Coram Branch was a condescending jerk who saw I was angry, and he escalated the situation. First thing Tuesday morning, I'll make sure all fees are reversed AND get my money & close the account!!!!

I was told because it isn't people's bank anymore and I could roll my own and bring them in. Take away reasons why I kept my accounts there at people's for 30 years. What's next. Looking for new bank
