Premium Prices – Disappointing Warranty Service
Around one and a half years ago, I purchased a reversible Montblanc leather belt for approximately €330. The belt was bought through the Montblanc online store and was additionally personalized with my initials.
After just over a year, a significant quality issue appeared: the two layers of leather began to stick together permanently where they overlap. As a result, extensive damage developed across the leather. Since it is a reversible belt, the damage is visible regardless of which side is worn – even across the embossed initials. The belt has now become virtually unusable.
Even more disappointing than the defect itself, however, was the subsequent warranty process.
Although the belt was purchased online and I had already submitted clear photos of the damage, I was initially asked to bring the belt in person to a Montblanc boutique so that it could be forwarded to the quality department. The nearest boutique is a 4–5 hour round trip from my home. After I complained, I was instead referred to an authorized partner, which still required a 1 hour and 15 minute round trip. At no point was I offered the option of returning the belt by mail.
Only after further correspondence did Montblanc inform me that their quality department had confirmed the defect based on the photographs. Nevertheless, they still insisted that I visit a boutique in person. I was then told that my original belt was no longer available and that I should choose a different model at a boutique. At the same time, because of the personalization, the replacement belt would be shipped to me by mail anyway. To this day, I cannot understand why I am not allowed to send the defective belt directly to Montblanc if the remainder of the process is handled by mail regardless. What made this even more confusing was that I was still able to find my original belt available in the Montblanc online store.
I fully understand that quality issues can occur even with premium manufacturers. What matters is how they are handled. From a luxury brand such as Montblanc, I would have expected that a product purchased online could also be handled through a simple mail-in warranty process. In comparable situations with Hermès and Louis Vuitton, the customer service was worlds better!!
Despite an acknowledged manufacturing defect, I am still left with an unusable belt and, to date, have not been offered a practical solution. Unfortunately, this experience is completely inconsistent with the premium standards that Montblanc claims to represent in both its products and its customer service.
