Extremely disappointing experience – small business owners beware!

I would strongly caution other small business owners, particularly sole traders, before entering into a contract with Localsearch.

I was in the early stages of establishing my own business when I received a phone call from Localsearch asking to arrange a meeting to discuss their marketing services. The representative was extremely persuasive, and the service was presented to me as a subscription-based marketing package, with the website made out to be essentially free. At no point did I feel it was properly explained just how restrictive and binding the contract would be.

Within a few weeks of signing up, I realised I couldn’t afford the ongoing expense. As a sole trader, I needed to take on employment to support myself financially while building my business at a slower pace. I contacted Localsearch to cancel, believing this was a reasonable request given how recently I’d signed up.

I was then told I couldn’t cancel because I was supposedly paying for a website over a 12-month contract. This was completely different from how I had understood the service to have been presented. By this point, I had already paid approximately $450 and had not even received a website.

I genuinely feel I was mis-sold the service. I’ve never encountered a subscription arrangement quite like it, where cancelling within the first few weeks, before even receiving the website, could leave someone facing such substantial charges.

What followed was months of stressful correspondence, pressure to pay and threats of further action. Eventually, following considerable back and forth, my circumstances were reviewed and a substantially reduced settlement of $995 was offered.

I reluctantly accepted the settlement, not because I believed the charges were justified, but simply to bring an extremely stressful dispute to an end.

I was advised that their accounts team would contact me to arrange a payment plan. Months later, I discovered correspondence that had escalated to threats of registering a commercial payment default with CreditorWatch, potentially affecting my business for five years.

The entire experience has left me feeling incredibly disappointed and taken advantage of. As a sole trader simply trying to establish a business, I never expected what was presented as a marketing subscription to become such a prolonged and stressful financial burden.

My advice to other small business owners is to be extremely cautious. Do not rely solely on what you’re told during a sales meeting. Ask exactly what you’re paying for, whether the website is genuinely included at no additional cost, and what happens if your circumstances change and you need to cancel.

I would never use or recommend Localsearch again.

He's respectful of my budget and has learnt about my business, makes commitments to get back to me in good time frames, and has checked in with me knowing as a sole owner operator, time is tight for me. I find him to be honest with the local search product and only offers me what honestly is a right fit. No pushy sales pitch..has great ideas where we have agreed or disagreed they are right for me ..but 8 can see he's learnt about what I need and has been flexible and suggestive ..not pushy.
