Absolutely appalling experience
Absolutely appalling experience with the manager of Ken Black Wexford. To be clear, the other employee who eventually assisted us was polite, helpful and professional throughout. My criticism is entirely directed at the manager.
We bought a Babylo bath and changing unit which, when taken out of the box and assembled, had broken components and a rip in the changing mat. We returned it within a week with our receipt and the fault was accepted. We actually intended to use the refund to buy a separate baby bath and changing mat from the same store and had already picked them out while the manager inspected the faulty unit.
Unfortunately, the manager went from zero to 100 almost immediately. In my experience he was rude, confrontational and raised his voice across the store at a soon to be father and a woman who is eight months pregnant. He told us it was repair or replacement and "that's that". When I asked, "So I don't really have a choice then, do I?" his response was simply "No". I became heated in response and I am happy to acknowledge and apologise for that, but we certainly did not enter the shop looking for an argument.
The manager flatly refused our request for a refund despite the product being acknowledged as faulty and returned within 30 days. Store policy does not override Irish consumer law. Under the Consumer Rights Act 2022 and CCPC guidance, consumers have a short term right to terminate for faulty goods within 30 days without having to accept a repair or replacement.
Instead, we were given replacement parts. In a moment you genuinely could not make up, one of the replacement parts was itself broken and had to be handed straight back and replaced again. At that point I had completely lost confidence in a product intended for our baby and was not comfortable putting my child in it.
I phoned Ken Black head office from outside the store. Credit where it is due, they listened, called me back and immediately told us to return the product for a full refund. I kept head office on the phone while we went back inside.
The manager who had previously been perfectly willing to raise his voice and argue across the store was suddenly nowhere to be seen once head office had authorised the refund. He left the other employee to deal with us and process it. She was polite and professional and should not have been left dealing with the fallout from a situation created by her manager.
Credit to Ken Black head office for ultimately doing the right thing and to the employee who assisted us. Unfortunately, the manager's handling of what should have been a straightforward return of an acknowledged faulty baby product turned it into an unnecessarily unpleasant experience.
After this experience, I will not shop in Ken Black again. What concerns me most is that this did not feel like a simple misunderstanding of our consumer rights. We were repeatedly told that repair or replacement was the policy and that we had no choice, despite the statutory rights that apply to faulty goods. That made the problem feel systemic within the store rather than an isolated mistake.
It should not require an escalation to head office for a customer to have their rights under Irish consumer law respected.
