It’s a cool kit, but directions are very vague for first timers

Had high hopes for this kit. It was meant to be a gift but now it'll go in the garbage. The tutorial videos make it look relatively simple, despite the obvious intricacy. It is not simple. I watched every video multiple times. Read every section of the website. Read many facebook posts. It wasn't enough. There are things they don't tell you that you need to know to achieve success with the project.

The materials themselves, aside from the wire glue, are decent quality. The tweezers are fine enough to be useful (I picked up single grains of sand), the scissors worked, etc. Biggest disappointment there is the gold band wrapping the outside which acts as the frame. It's joined with an ugly cheap looking section. At the end of the project the glue sprayed there leaves spots all over the frame as well. Additionally, one of the colours they sent was wrong. I had to mix other sand colours to get something close.

The filigree glue smells awful and made me quite sick twice. I tried everything to reduce the fumes, over several days and attempts, but nothing worked. In order to complete the project I had to use a full respirator. Uncomfortable to say the least but I was determined. When I asked on facebook whether I could use a different type of glue, my post was never published. Guess they don't want negative feedback. So shady. I tried a couple of different types of glue that are less noxious but none held the wire enough. It just came off.

They don't explain enough about what the sand fixing glue does to the sand. Most importantly, it makes it hard. I decided I had to complete the sand filling in one day lest I end up with a wrecked project. Exhausting.

The final stage glue - again, not explained at all - makes the hard surface totally soft again! Through no fault of my own, as I carefully sprayed the surface from the directed height, some of the glue dropped onto the surface instead of spraying. 3 drops wrecked the surface further. The sand moved and I had one very bad spot where you could see the white plastic surface under the sand. There's no fixing this since I couldn't ask questions on facebook. It made the surface more lumpy too.

The shiny surface is not achievable with the kit. You need to purchase resin somewhere and apply that which is not an easy process and can be very toxic. I would've been ok with the gritty sparkly sandpapery surface which has appeal too IF I could've made it totally flat and smooth.

I also found myself picking up many single grains of sand that moved out of their sections. Again, following directions to the letter. Yes, the filigree was cemented down fully with any cracks filled in with glue and yes, I only filled the sections to the recommended height.

Because you are laying millions of grains of sand in a water carrier, you have to keep the project flat at all times. Therefore, you don't notice the bumpy surface until you're done and can hold it up. If I had known this beforehand, maybe I could've looked at it from table level across the surface and fixed issues before they were permanent.

Though this is also not real Cloisonné, which is made using a kiln and firing the sand to affix it, I thought it might be a fun pastime for me to make and give as gifts as I love intricate complex creative projects. It appeared to be a cool artistic endeavour in its own right that does require some artistic skill. Alas, this was not to be.

Extremely disappointed. Due to lack of help I also feel the company just wants sales and to hide negative experiences. What a mistake on their part. If the support was better, and another glue could have been found, it's possible this would have become a major craft for me.

Took awhile to get here, would have liked the paints to have been marked rather than trying to guess the color scheme and not have to share paints between the different bookmarks

Very satisfying hobby. The kits include everything you need and the video tutorials walk you through the techniques. Very pleased with the results and I have so much of everything left over I’ll definitely try something else.

I love this hobby. I ordered the bookmarks and the fox. I started with the fox and it has turned out beautifully. I am going to be ordering the more expensive tool kit and a supply of sand to work on my own designs. I wish I had found this years ago.
