Awful, condescending leadership and tutors.
Tutors were unprepared, inflexible, and played favorites giving some people resources while telling others to find it yourself; multiple people have been fired within the program for incompetence. It is very inflexible and especially for people with learning differences, they shame you into thinking you cannot do well or get into medical school; moreover, leadership characterized accommodations covered by the ADA (federal law) as "gifts" and "good customer service". Students also received threats from leadership and tutors refused to help with one blatantly ignoring students.
I did the whole Altius program and it was one of the biggest wastes of money. They have no material for you to study, you have to do your own research and just take tests. The tutors are often rude and tell you to review content on your own. Most of the people I met through the program did not get the amazing score that Altius claims you will get. Most people have to retake the MCAT and often study on their own and do better. The CARS section is either too easy or something that AMMC would not ask. All of the FLE scores are inflated. They have a guarantee and when you tell them you did not get the scores close to the FLE they won't contact you back. So what is the point of having a guarantee if you won't help students? Notice that there are no reviews of their products on their own website. They are just a money-grabbing corporation that is taking advance of pre-meds wanting to get into medical school. Please learn from my mistake!!!
I paid for a bundle of practice tests and completed the first one without any problems. The quality was ok, probably a little worse than the top tier companies but it still felt like helpful practice. When I returned to do another practice test a couple months later I wasn't able to log into my account. I e-mailed customer support and they took 19 days to respond and their response did not help with the issue. I replied explaining this and it took 5 days to get an almost identical response, nearly word for word, that obviously did not address the issue. At that point I replied but gave up hope of ever being able to access the practice tests.
I would avoid doing business with this company. They cut corners on their technology and put no effort into providing customer service. They are by far the worst of about 4-5 MCAT prep companies that I've purchased resources from. I would give this company 0 stars.
My experience with Altius was not the best. There are some great tutors, however, most of the tutors I had all ended up not responding to me. It happened multiple times. A lot of my time leading up to my exam date was spent trying to find a new tutor and making sure I had someone there to help me when I had a question. This was very stress inducing on my end.
Altius was phenomenal in helping me earn my dream score of 520. Their program is complete, structured, engaging, and interactive. I loved it and can honestly say it exceeded my very high expectations. If you want to score in the stratosphere, then this is the course for you!
I'm usually a bad standardized test taker, even though I'm great at excelling in my classes at school. I never thought that I could score well on such a difficult test as the MCAT, and I always thought that it would be one thing that would weed me out from my future goals. However, I ended up with a 513 on the MCAT!!
Think what distinguishes Altius from other companies is that they use actual science to keep up to date with techniques in memory and learning. They use spaced repetition, mastery of concepts and not just content, and Anki to cement everything in. In the end, I felt like I didn't just memorize everything but I understood all of the concepts which was much more powerful when it came to answering the questions.
Their exams are very similar, if not harder than the actual MCAT passages so you know exactly what you are going to get on the real day. I also love how they begin testing you in practicing passages from day one in a group setting, it really helps gain critical passage comprehension skills that most students struggle with. The one-on-one tutoring for me was awesome! My tutor wasn't just there for me to learn, but helped me out when I struggled and got me through some emotionally tough times. I think this is because they hire younger medical students who have completed the program and can relate to the experience.
However, I am not going to lie to you and tell you it's easy. The program is still one of the hardest things I had to complete. You have to be independent and learn most of the materials on your own (I think that learning in this way helped me retain the information). There is a huge checklist of goals to accomplish each week and its a huge time commitment. However I am confident that if you trust the process and follow their advice, you'll be able to score like me even if you're not the best standardized test taker
I didn't get to use all of my tutoring hours. This program isn't very flexible and shouldn't be purchased unless the student is prepared to commit to it and knows for sure that nothing crazy will come up in the following months. I purchased the gold packages and I regret it. I recommend only purchasing the book.
All they want is your money. Way better ways to do MCAT prep
I really loved Altius!! The only complaint I have is sometimes the small groups could be unreliable. The classes, practice test and material was far superior than any other test prep company.
Altius has built their program with a growth mindset as their core philosophy. They believe in each student, and they refuse to accept anything less than the best from each of their students and mentors alike. They have done their background research and built a curriculum that matches no more or less than what the MCAT tests. I felt confident that everything I was learning was valuable. Altius helped me exceed my goals and attain a score that seems unreal. From a diagnostic score of 503, I was able to score a 526 on my actual test.
I absolutely love Altius!! I have taken Princeton Review, as well as Kaplan, and hands down Altius is the best! The amount of resources, the 1:1 tutoring, the study groups, the planning and test prep to ensure you are as comfortable as possible before sitting for the MCAT... It is all very well done, and I could not have been happier! I took the MCAT after using Altius and my score increased by 11 points!! This program is amazing, and I highly recommend it!
The program worked well for me. I did the Silver Program, which included access to the book and practice tests, fifteen sessions with a 1-on-1 tutor, and a spot in classroom sessions. I ended up scoring in the 100th percentile on my MCAT, which opened lots of doors and helped me get into some really great schools. The classroom sessions were the most helpful part for me--they are great practice using MCAT-style questions, and having a tutor there to break down questions was so useful. My 1-on-1 tutor was less useful. He was a nice guy, but I felt like the one-on-one sessions were a waste of time since he wasn't always prepared. Besides, I tend to learn best on my own anyway. The practice tests were difficult but fair, and seemed to represent the MCAT well (except for maybe the CAR section, which didn't quite capture the tone of official AAMC materials).
One thing that I wish I had known before going in was how much time you need to put in to qualify for the guarantee. I didn't end needing the guarantee, but to even qualify to get continued help (if you score below 90th percentile) you have to complete a checklist of tasks every week, and it is a TON of work. Like, up to 30-40 hours a week depending on how much help you need and how easily the material comes to you. It really pays off if you can manage it, but be prepared to work REALLY hard.
Overall I would recommend Altius to anyone, just keep in mind those few things.
Altius provided me with excellent classroom instruction, individual tutoring, and program materials. The materials were highly reflective of the actual MCAT. With the help of Altius, I was able to score 99th percentile on my MCAT.
Altius is a MCAT preparatory course that offers classes and 1 on 1 tutoring. The classes are a really good at reviewing content and building strategy for specific questions. The 1 on 1 tutors were students who took the Altius class prior and scored a 515 or above score. 1 on 1 tutoring can be done in multiple different ways but I think it helped me the most with specific content and refining strategy for specific question blueprints. The course gives you everything you need to learn the content and does a good job at guiding you to the best strategy. This course is very difficult, i compare it to a full 12 credit semester of undergrad with all science classes. I took the spring short track in 2020 and wish i took the long track so that i could spread out the workload over a longer period of time. The course is also pricy so definitely look out for deals I got mine during the black friday event they had which reduced the price a lot for their gold program.
I loved studying with Altius! The whole program gave me direction and accountability. The classes are structured to be group reviews of practice problems so I wasn’t just sitting in a lecture, I got to participate and practice applying the content I was studying to test taking. I ended up getting me goal score!
I thought my first draft of my personal statement was pretty good, but I quickly learned that what I thought was good, was not the same as what admission’s committees thought was good. In doing the admissions package through Altius I saw my personal statement and 15 activity descriptions come to life through the extremely useful feedback that Altius provided. When I submitted my medical school application I did so confidently after the constructive feedback I had received.
I never achieved my MCAT goal despite retrying the ALTIUS program twice and studying for more than two years. I, and many of my University science professors as well as current medical students, residents, and physicians were not impressed with the layout of the program.
Honestly, you should not attempt this program unless you have no other obligations (ie. no job and no college courses). They mean well, but the weekly requirements are far too much to handle if you have anything else going on in your life. Yes, you may have a personal tutor or study hall times where you can ask for more in depth explanations about topics, but 80% of the time it is entirely self-taught and their book just gives bullet point lists of what you need to cover on your own in your free time. After trying to keep up with this for four months I was hopelessly behind and decided to drop it. Instead I used Memm and I learned far more content in a fraction of the time. Some people have great success with altius, but I was not one. Perhaps it just comes down to personality, schedule, and how you learn best. For me, Memm ended up being perfect, but for others altius may be the better choice. Choose wisely.
Altius Test prep coached me to an MCAT score in the 92nd percentile. I was retaking the exam and improved my score by 16 points through the individualized program that offered peer support, mentorship, interactive group practice sessions, and private tutoring. The spaced repetition learning plan solidifies knowledge and the lesson plans from Altius make MCAT material simplified and straightforward. Although challenging, if students remain committed to the program, success is nearly guaranteed.
