Two defective Land Rovers, a breakdown, a disrupted family holiday — and 25% off the opportunity to do it all again
Before booking with 4x4 Vehicle Hire, I strongly recommend reading this.
I don't doubt the many customers who have left positive reviews. I was one of them once. But the real test of a hire company isn't what happens when everything goes according to plan. It's what happens when it doesn't.
Ours started with a paid-for station collection that didn't quite turn out to be a station collection. After changing directions and even being sent a different postcode, we found ourselves dragging heavy bags across tram tracks, down alleys and along busy streets in the heat, trying to find the vehicle.
Not a great start.
Shortly after collection, we were advised by WhatsApp not to use the Discovery's parking brake because it had recently been replaced but was still having “some issues”.
Then came the coolant warnings.
Then the breakdown.
Eventually, the Discovery gave up completely in a busy junction, leaving my family stranded and requiring assistance from the police, a recovery operator and, remarkably, a passing former Land Rover technician.
A replacement vehicle eventually arrived.
It had problems too.
The consequences went well beyond losing a single day. This was a family holiday that had taken months to organise around work, university, school and three children aged 22, 19 and 14. From the collection fiasco onwards, far too much of our holiday was spent dealing with vehicle faults, waiting for assistance, changing plans, organising alternative transport and generally sorting out problems that weren't ours to sort out.
We also ended up out of pocket.
My favourite example is the coolant.
We bought coolant for their vehicle after the warnings started. Our 4x4 Vehicle Hire contact specifically asked us to send them the receipt.
So we did.
More than two months later, they haven't even reimbursed that.
It's a tiny amount of money. But, for me, it says rather a lot.
What happened afterwards was perhaps even more disappointing.
I submitted a detailed written complaint setting out exactly what had happened, supported by the WhatsApp messages, photographs, invoices and other evidence, and asked them to put things right.
They didn't.
Instead, we were offered 25% off our next hire.
After two defective vehicles, a breakdown and substantial disruption to our family holiday, 25% off the opportunity to do it all again struck me as an unusually imaginative solution.
I wrote back, pointed out what they hadn't addressed—including our out-of-pocket expenses—and deliberately gave them one final opportunity to sort it out.
Nothing.
And that is why I am writing this review.
I'm not suggesting every customer has this experience. Clearly they don't. Nor am I suggesting vehicles never break down. Of course they do.
My concern is what happens after something goes wrong.
Perhaps the most telling part of our experience was how often other people stepped in to help solve problems they hadn't created and had absolutely no responsibility to solve.
A police officer. A passing former Land Rover technician. Recovery personnel. Uber drivers. Complete strangers who simply saw a family in difficulty and helped.
Again and again, other people took responsibility for problems that weren't theirs.
The company we'd actually paid seemed rather less interested in taking responsibility for problems that were.
There is no embellishment in this account. I've retained the WhatsApp correspondence, photographs, invoices and other contemporaneous evidence.
Prospective customers can make up their own minds.

Provided a car last minute with a towbar as a different Company let me down. Quick turnaround and great customer service.

Beware!!! This company checked the SUV in and gave me a clean report. Two weeks later they tried to charge me an extra 100 Euros for “wheel rim damage”. I had videotaped the car before and after using. There was no damage. When I spoke to Patric on the phone, he could not defend his billing. This man cons people out of money since they have already returned home. I called my credit card company and filed a complaint. He shouldn’t have even had my card on file any more.
DO NOT TRUST THIS COMPANY.
