I registered with Vibe Teacher Recruitment this time last year, being referred by a dear friend also my neighbour, and telling me that it’s worth trying. So, I went to their office in Hammersmith to do the registration. Everything was very fine in the first place, the staff, the office, it did give me a very good impression, or should I say, a very good VIBE..Although I did feel a bit strange that basically each time I received a call since then, be it a follow up on the reference check or a proposed allocation to schools around my area, it’s coming from a different staff from their team. They did a colour code and put me to black this time, peach next time, and back to black the other day, and each time I received a call from a different number, so I just couldn’t keep track of WHO was dealing with my profile and WHO was responsible to handle and follow up with me..I remember there was a day that I received calls from 3 different people, trying to follow up with me on the same issue, which was about my pay. And I had to repeat myself and give the same explanation again and again, about why I wanted to have a raise in my pay after having worked for them for a consecutive 3 months.
I was sent to a school based in Southwest London. The staff from Vibe told me at around 7:30 that it was only 35-45 minutes away from my home, and the school was just by the bus stop. It took me an hour and 15 minutes to reach the school because they just didn’t take into consideration the traffic and things like that. I was given a long face and being scolded at by the school’s office staff and the business manager, questioning me why I was late, and they said Vibe had confirmed with them early on that morning and so it wasn’t a last minute booking. It’s after I told them about where I lived and how bad the traffic was that they understood and apologized for their attitude earlier on. The school was quite good overall, I met some nice teachers and students there.
I remember on the day of registration I told them very very explicitly that I wanted to stay close to my area because I have children to look after and I want to be home as soon as possible after school finishes. On that trial day, by the time I returned home during the rush hour, it was almost 5:30. I called the person that assigned me to the school but another person picked up the call, she didn’t seem quite willing to talk to me, uttering at such a pace and tone that I just couldn’t stop her to make a query. Later that evening I received a call from their team that the school wanted me back the following day which should last until the end of the term, and they asked me to confirm……originally I hesitated but as soon as the guy said they didn’t have any other job and couldn’t guarantee one for the next day should I skip that one and wait, because of his persuasion, I chose to go back to that school.
Fortunately, I met a colleague in that school who helped me to get into another agency which is Special Needs focused, they are incredibly supportive and respectful. I love the fact that they follow me up after each week’s work at the school and they don’t push me, they make me feel a part of their family.
If you want to get a job quickly, Vibe can help you because I trust they have many linkage with schools, but if you want to feel treasured and respected as a supply worker, I suggest that you should go for smaller boutique agencies, one that would make you feel valued, not one that pass you around and send you far away without taking your major request into account.
Anyway, I still have to thank Vibe Teacher Recruitment, because it’s through working for them that I met the person that helped me find my current job, indirectly.
