Terms and conditions were blurred out and did not show that the trial would result in a subscription.
I read the reviews on the Facebook advert which had clearly been made by the company saying “at last a company that doesn’t automatically apply subscription” and one person wrote “I worry if the deal is too good to be true it usually is” followed by comment saying “oh no if you want to continue you have to contact”.
You have no idea how this impacts low income families- shame on you!!!

My 9 yr old grandson really enjoys his Phoenix comic. It arrives regularly and he looks forward to it coming.

My son absolutely loves these comics. He looks forward to them arriving in the post each week.

They certainly seem to appeal to a neurodiverse reader!

Great magazine always sent on time. My kids love it!

My granddaughter loves The Phoenix. She waits impatiently for it to arrive each week & reads it from cover to cover.

My son loves this comic. It's also getting him interested in art and drawing. He's been doing the online tutorials which he really enjoys.

I buy phoenix for my grandson who is 10. After over a year he is just as excited to receive his comic through the post now as he was when it started. His mother says he prefers to read his comic when it first arrives to the internet. For his birthday this year I bought him 2 mugs, a pencil case and 3 files to keep his comics tidy and he is really thrilled with them.

Pros- kids love it. Has launched some great comic authors. It's something a bit different. 6 issues for £1 promo works....however....

Cons- no immediate account created to manage subscription. Link in email just takes you to a sign in page and verification code emails never arrive. It makes it impossible to self-manage subscriptions.

- No warnings or notifications of renewal. Was not even given a next billing date on taking out the initial subscription to be aware of if I need to cancel before this date or to ensure I had enough money in my account.

- ABSOLUTELY IMPOSSIBLE TO CANCEL without contacting them because you can't make an account! It's an insane business model, I'd be more inclined to keep my subscription if I felt that I had control over it rather than being held to an office admin picking up my email and getting round to cancelling it on my behalf.

- it's quite expensive for what it is. It works out at about £2.80 per weekly issue. I'd rather pay double that, or just over, for a slightly bigger monthly issue.

It's such a shame because it is a great comic and my kids love it.

The excitement of it arriving through the post, the physical comic itself to read over and over brings so much joy and the characters relate to my boys. The Phoenix comic and all that comes with it is such fun!

We live in Australia and our 7 year old grandson lives in England so this is an ideal gift. He loves reading the magazine every week. The whole family have started to talk about some of the characters featured.

It's the greatest comic ever. Orders arrived fast and the site is easy to use.

Honestly the twins love these comics. They wait for them to come through the post every week.

The Phoenix is suc a wonderful comic; my children both love it (age 7 and 10) - they read it front to back again and again, and are constantly drawing using the tutorials or copying the pictures. It's just so lovely to see my son running down as soon as the post comes, or asking daily if its arrived yet! Definitely the highlight of his week!

The Phoenix has become part of the family, with our 10 year old waiting impatiently for the postman every week and pouring over every single page as soon as it arrives. We’re all huge fans, not least us as parents given that it drags him away from the dreaded screen time…!

My son says the writers are amazing and creative. He loves these magazines!

The good: The comic is good for kids of the right range.

The bad: Their cancellation policy is shameful. I cancelled in January 2026, and my subscription does not end until April, 12+ issues later (I guess 3 months, one comic a week.)

Its very sad because my son did love it once. But now it sits unopened and unwanted, and that's the memory we'll take from it. And the money they have taken.

Update: restored to three stars - see response below. Quarterly billing is the company choice for financial reasons but it's good to see they are open to cancellation via customer services. In retrospect, the web login (which I only set when U wanted cancel) does provide helpful information I wished I'd had earlier.

Some positive: it arrives each week, and the magazine was very good for ages ~5-8.

The comics are good but the commercial model is horrible. It's deliberately designed to lure people in via a cheap trial and charge large amounts through a long period auto renewal model with no reminder to cancel, and no option for a reaonable (weekly) subscription period. A real shame, as the artists and the publishers seem like really decent people. They could do to find a middle ground that also considers the customer.

Very disappointing service. I noticed a £69.99 charge on my bank which has made me go overdrawn so I contacted Phoenix to ask for a refund
Reply was sorry we can’t refund you you’ve renewed your subscription. I didn’t even know I had a subscription, and at this point I hadn’t even had any more magazines. So I will now receive magazines for 6 months that I don’t want, and am paying overdraft charges due to an unexpected charge. There was no email saying it was up for renewal, no information provided at the time of signing up about renewal, and from a comic that is for children you’d think they would have more friendly family policies, rather than a one line response and then being ignored in further emails. Dreadful service, be warned, do not buy this comic. They don’t care about their readers or loyal customers it’s a dreadful attitude to have. We have bought their comic for over three years and I feel so let down it’s ended like this.
