Watch out for extra bulky items being delivered and then being made to pay for collection!
I went with Howdens West Bowling after it was suggested by the builder. We were going for two kitchens - a smaller one on the ground floor and an open plan kitchen downstairs. Both were measured out and plans sent through and prices negotiated - I managed to get some complimentary strip lights in the deal! With the larger basement kitchen as this was all being tanked out it had to be remeasured to make sure fitting was right.
Once this was all done there was a huge push to get everything delivered by the end of October as there a sale taking place. Items were delivered; we then found a dent in one of the fridges which was resolved with a reduction in the price and a couple of cabinets with damage which were quickly replaced.
The basement kitchen items had additional worktop which when I contacted the salesperson I was dealing with he told me it would be collected for free and that giving extra was fine as it could be returned with other items that was extra which I thought was great of Howdens. Even the kitchen fitter couldn’t work out why we had received so much of it which was also the case with the backboard. I informed the salesperson that we had finished the kitchen and provided a list of items to return.
Having got the complimentary lights with some plinth lights I had paid for it turned out the cost of getting these fitted was really high and just was not cost effective so I decided to return the items as we could not use them. I received a refund for the items.
A couple of hours later I receive a call back from the salesman who accused me of making complaints to their head office about pricing and items and that I had returned items earlier in the day. He told me the manager wasn’t happy and he wasn’t prepared to collect the items for free now and I had to pay for delivery if I wanted to return the items - I was being punished for returning the items I think. He also had an issue that I was returning the backboards. I was really annoyed with his tone of voice and that he was insinuating I had complained when in actual fact I had a query about pricing as I had been charged for what was complimentary items. I told him head office, his manager and he didn’t know the difference in what was a query and what was a complaint which I now felt I wanted to make with what I was getting accused of. He then started to backtrack stating this must have been miscommunication but failed to apologise for his accusations.
He told me he couldn’t book my collection and had to speak to the manager. I told him I returned the items as due to the connectivity issue and cost it would not work he then continued to patronise me by saying it’s really simple and needed an extra switch. I wasn’t prepared to keep items that I could not use and if his manager was upset he needed to get a grip! I explained that he had measured the area twice and it was actually his error that I had so much worktop as two pieces was more than enough. He failed to accept any responsibility for that!
The salesman called me back to tell me a couple of hours later that I would have to pay £40plus VAT for the collection which I agreed to as the items were over £500 and I had no other choice but to pay it as there was no other way I could get the items to them in my car.
Was was initially a positive experience became a nightmare with the manager becoming so defensive about queries and me contacting their head office which I had every right to ask and then a real poor attitude across the board for having returned items.
Poor customer service which left me feeling like I was trying to do them out of money when in actual fact I had spent over £11k on kitchens! This has made me change my review experience from great to poor as it’s left a very bad after taste.
