So this review is specifically about Hammerite Ultima.
I was painting some railings for a family member. I took a grinder, then wire brush and finally sandpaper to bring it to a standard as it had tears of rust.
I applied the red oxide primer. That stuff sticks like glue. No issues there.
Then I visited B&Q for Hammerite Matt black. The only one they had was Ultima. Sadly I didn't read the back to see it was water based. I'd have run a mile of I had. I picked it up and a week or so later, prepped the railing by sanding it and tried to apply the paint. It went on in streaks, like putting water on buttered bread. I tried a different brush, but no different. I tried a roller, same thing. It's terrible, in fact its worse than terrible. Hours upon hours I spent hours upon hours trying to use this stuff at the expense of my mental wellbeing and questioning my life choices as to how I got here. It dries really quickly, but I could see the red oxide beneath the watery streaks of this paint so managed a few coats on certain bits. I could still see red oxide after the tin was empty.
Last week I purchased another tin, but this time Hammerite black solvent based. I took to the fence today, it's had nearly two weeks to cure. Again, I prepped the railing by sanding to give it a key. It took loads of paint off. The Ultima hardly stuck at all!!
I completed the fence with the solvent based Hammerite. It looks okay.
The review. Hammerite Ultima is terrible! Seldom does the opportunity arise that you want to give minus stars on a product, but this is the product. Don't buy it. Your mental health will deteriorated and you'll consider chucking it in the bin only to buy a decent product.
Hammerite should be ashamed of themselves selling this rubbish.

Use Waxoyl, very effective and easy to apply. 4* not 5 because spray can be a bit gloppy.

I’m very disappointed with this paint "Hammerite Ultima Metal Paint Smooth Finish Light Grey 750ml – Advanced Protection, Direct to Rust, Water-Based, Durable Exterior Coating". Despite following proper surface preparation and cleaning the metal thoroughly, rust started to reappear after just 3 months. This is far from what I would expect from a product marketed as “advanced protection” and “direct to rust.”

The application itself was also frustrating. The paint does not cover well, tends to smear during application, and requires multiple coats to achieve even a basic finish. Even then, the result is inconsistent and not particularly durable.

Overall, the performance does not match the claims on the packaging. I would not recommend this product if you are looking for a long-lasting and reliable metal protection solution.

Using since 1975, their Waxoyl range in Black. Excellent product, needs the odd touch up from time to time. Motorhome now waxoyled since 12 years ago. A Ford Transit based Chausson. ,, STILL NO RUST, as Transits notorious for rusting. Many cars I have done over the years no rust another example a Datsun 120A coupe 1975 vintage, bought new rust proofed with it sold it 6 years later NO RUST, and they rust rusted away just looking at them. BUT only as good as the person who puts it on. Inside sills, inner arches behind plastic shields, inside doors engine compartment, box sections, basically any where you cannot see. A messy product to put on. Now changing to Dinitrol as have access to air line and ramp and Dinitrol do cartridges that fit the air line gun.

Ordered a 750ml of white paint got a spray can silver.
