I really lack understanding of tech and financial terms. Income and outgoings is as about as much as I know. So I did struggle to understand free agent initially. But the 2 times I've spoken to an operator about 2 different things, they were incredibly patient and were able to explain clearly what to do and what things meant. Even advise on what to ask my accountant. Cannot fault the human interaction... fantastic.

I am enjoying getting to grips with FreeAgent. The more I become familiar with what it offers the more impressed I am with the services it provides. The online guidance and support it provides is good. Communications are also very good. There is much more to come, but for the moment I am very happy. The company’s accountant is familiar with and endorses FreeAgent, an added and important bonus.

The free agent support adviser explained the way the app would work in relatively simple terms. I am tech phobic and dreading the whole thing. Their pricing seems reasonable. Initially £5 + Vat monthly for 6 months, then £10 pcm or £50 pa, then year 2 is £10 pa, all plus VAT. They are not part of the Nat West which the NW site led me to believe. The App will apparently take info required from my own input as I understand it. They offer a free 30 day trial to try it out.

FreeAgent can be difficult to use in a multi-currency environment (EUR/GBP). Transfers between internal bank accounts are sometimes treated as income or expenses rather than simple internal transfers, which can distort revenue figures and complicate reconciliations. Currency revaluation entries may also appear directly in bank accounts, making the accounts harder to understand and audit.
In addition, subscription billing practices can be confusing, with payment attempts sometimes made across multiple stored cards. There are also concerns about how payment details are retained and managed under GDPR.
Overall, while FreeAgent may work for simple single-currency businesses, companies operating with multiple currencies or international transactions may find the system unnecessarily complex and time-consuming to manage.

I have only just registered with FreeAgent, but I have been very impressed with their staff, who have answered all my questions professionally, friendly and have a good knowledge of the system. So far really happy would recommend.

I've been using FreeAgent for a few months to manage my limited company, and it's been excellent. The UI is clean and intuitive, and as someone who needs to stay compliant without it consuming my time, it delivers exactly that. Setting up payroll took under ten minutes. I recommend watching the YouTube video they have which is about 30 mins long to get the most out of it. Genuinely impressive for a first-timer. If you run a small business and want professional-grade accounting without the complexity, it's an easy recommendation.

Was hoping this would make our CIC's accounting easier. Didn't work for us!
You can't have an accounting software that you can't raise PO's? But you offer a very expensive third party to do that?
When raiding invoices, you have to manually type in your invoice numbers every time, it doesn't auto generate, nor does it make it easy to add a hunt for an item, which is very tedious and not straightforward. Raising an invoice should be a few minutes not take over 10!
We will be sticking with Quick file.

Its not the most best app I have used. I seem to be always search for where things are. Unless your money coming is all for Sales, splitting out payments is a pain. Creating a simple bill and telling it where it needs to be paid from seems to multiple clicks down the rabbit hole. Xero is much easier to use than this
Updated 18/03/26 - had to lower the stars. This software has so many limitations. Its 4x as long to do anything. You cannot copy expenditure, you cannot back date anything.
You certainly get what you pay for and if like me its free you spend more time sorting out issues, it might be worth just paying for a subscription like Xero where you can do eveyrthing in half the time.

The app is days behind the transactions - so i have to remember what they where - and there are no flexible categories where i can write what it was for specifically - again i wont remember in a years time?

Freeagent is a basic system that works worth bank transfers. If you use Stripe for payments, they reconcile. If you don't, you've got to keep track of payments yourself. It's not great if you run a shop. Best if your transactions are all different amounts, then easier to match on bank feed.
