You are not guaranteed a refund
I completed the enquires and instead of a refund the HMRC informed me I owed them £300. Which is fair enough I am happy to pay what I owe.
However, my case was closed by the company in July without offering me the promised Amazon vouchers, for not getting a refund.
I spoke to a customer service advisor today who said, "I'll send you the link right now".
Still waiting.
Update,
I have had an email response that I was notified in an email how to apply for the vouchers. Never received.
Told me the HMRC billed me before I made my enquiry.
Not true, why would I make a claim of I knew I owed them money? It's nonsense.

Hi Craig, thanks for getting in touch.
There are a few things to unpick here, but lets start with the basics:
The first thing that we need to be really clear about (especially for our avid readers) is that we have not submitted a claim to HMRC on your behalf or contacted them regarding your situation in any way. So any money that you owe them has not been caused by applying to us to see if you are due a refund.
When clients apply to us, our application process is designed to ask some simple initial questions to get an idea of whether the client could potentially be owed a refund and it also gives them an idea of how much they could be due. Once the client has completed the information, our team will then review this and ask further questions if appropriate in order to ascertain whether or not the client has paid too much tax and could be due a refund. If they have, we submit a claim. If not, as in your instance, we close the application and email the client to let them know. This was done back in July as you have mentioned.
With regards to the Amazon vouchers: When you applied to us via one of our Amazon Voucher marketing campaigns, the email that you responded to initially contained all the details of how to apply for your Amazon voucher. Our apologies for any confusion, there is no separate email, it's all there contained in the first one. We'll look into things at this end to see why you were advised that we'd send you a link rather than referring you back to the initial email, and pick it up as a training issue. Thanks for letting us know.
And finally, with regards to HMRC letting you know that you owed them money before you applied to us, it seems that this could be a classic example of how confusing HMRC can be to deal with. Information regarding any tax that you have either under paid or over paid is usually sent out in a P800 document this is then often followed by a P2 coding notice to let you know that they will be claiming it back from you via your tax code over the coming year. Neither document is particularly user friendly to be honest.
We often get clients applying to us with no idea that they haven't paid enough tax, or, in some cases they know, but apply to us anyway in the hope that we can help them. Depending upon their circumstances we are sometimes able to reduce the amount that they owe if we discover that their tax code was incorrect in the first place - as they often are.

They take too big a cut of your refund …
Got a letter from HMRC telling me I'd a refund of £30 for one year & a refund of £60 for another year so £90 in total, they said they'd sent both cheques to the tax refund company who then sent me a cheque for £20 . I know they need to take their cut but would have thought 50% at the very most , wouldn't use them again

Hi Mr Clarke, thanks for getting in touch on this one as it gives us the opportunity to highlight an issue that many customers have in misunderstanding HMRC paperwork.
Allow me to explain:
When a client has overpaid tax for more than one year and it is subsequently identified (as it has been through using our service) they will issue what's called a P800 for each of the individual years that have been overpaid. So from what you have described, as you have overpaid for 2 tax years, you will have received a separate P800 for each of those tax years - so far so good.
Where it can get confusing is when a client is owed money in the first of the 2 years, it is then also included on the paperwork of the second year and added to the total in a cumulative manner. You should see a line called "less other adjustments" where the amount owed from the previous tax year has been included.
So in the example you are describing, you were owed £30 from both the first year and second year, but on the paperwork for the second year it will have also included the £30 from the first year as "other adjustments" so the total given on that letter of £60 is in fact for both years added together. You don't add the total amounts of each letter for each tax year together, as this has already been done for you, you simply use the total amount on the letter for the most recent tax year.
Hope that makes sense. I'm sure you can imagine how it can get even more confusing for clients who are owed up to 4 years worth of tax rather than just 2 like yourself.
Now, with regards to our fees - all our fees are laid out in our marketing material, on our website and are actually included in the application process too which all clients have to agree to so that we can represent them and carry out the work on their behalf.
You will know that we work on a no win no fee basis and do indeed take a percentage of any refund that we secure for our clients (obviously if there is no refund then the client pays nothing for the service that we have provided). Where this differs is when the refund is under £100, in this instance we have to charge our minimum fee which is just £38.
From what you have described, your refund would have been £60 (not £90 as explained above) so you will have fallen into this category and we will have taken our minimum fee and forwarded you the balance.
The part that clients often overlook is where their tax code will now have been changed as a result of our service and the work that we have carried out. This means that our clients are now paying less tax than they were previously and they keep 100% of those savings making the service they received from us better and better value as time goes on and they save more and more money.

Hi Marta, thanks for getting in touch but you seem to have missed some key details. Allow me to put your review into perspective for our avid readers.
We work on a no win, no fee basis. If there is no refund due, then clients have received a professional review of their tax situation and have the reassurance that they are not over paying (or under paying for that matter) and it hasn't cost them a penny.
Where a refund is due, we would take a pre agreed percentage of that fee. This is something that all clients agree to before signing up for our service and allowing us to look into their tax affairs on their behalf. It is set at just 38% - far from the 75% that you are quoting here.
However, where the percentage can creep up is where a refund is for a relatively small amount. Basically for anything under £100, we have to charge a minimum fee to cover some of our costs. This is usually £38 but in your instance you were paying an even lower rate, discounted down to just £30.
Part of our service that clients often forget about is that they also have their tax codes changed for them so that they will be paying less tax after we have completed our work and they keep 100% of those savings, so essentially our service becomes better and better value as time goes on.
So in your instance, although your initial refund was just £40, you now stand to save hundreds of pounds of tax over the next few years, all for the cost of a one off payment of just £30. Excellent value really.
