I took a storage this month. I wanted to book online but I couldn't understand 1 step so I give them a call. Mandy promptly answer my question and make sure that everything went smoothly and fast.
She was very nice and I really appreciated her help.

Account was overdue and contacted by accounts department on 29th October.
Told them I would pay on 31st as that is when I receive my private pension.
On the 31st I paid with the email link that had only been sent.
Then after a week or so got message to say account is overdue as I had not paid the late payment charge of £20.
I normally pay that as I normally get another email with a link with charge added.
But couldn't as it was not sent and promptly at 5am on 31st with link supplied.
I rung Shurgard on 11th to explain what happened as I am now getting messages of futher charges if outstanding balance of £20 is not paid. I explained I have no money until Friday 29th November when I get my pension again.
Was told Shurgard would contact me. 4 days later no call but still being sent messages of outstanding balance.

Spoke to a representative today, Jalexia. Very impressed with the level of customer service. Helped me with the process of sorting out my storage unit, very informative with assisting me with the right unit as I’m moving out and not sure how much space is needed.

Quick check in from Mandy who was very helpful, I was able to get started with the storage in under 10 minutes. Very reasonable price/offer currently available too.

Online booking was straightforward and I was able to book the size of unit I wanted for a reasonable price with the first months rental of £1. Friendly helpful staff when I arrived at the centre who explained everything, helped me set up the app to access the site and showed me to my storage unit. Everything was working, trolleys were available to unload your vehicle. My only reasons for a 4 star instead of a 5 are: No lighting in the actual unit, you have to rely on the light from the main corridor and on the second day of renting (Sunday) I couldn't access my unit for 2-3 hours due to a fire alarm activation. I was surprised to find out there is no out of hours contact or cover for that sort of incident so I had to wait until the staff arrived on site at around 9:30 so they could reset the alarm and check for issues.

The rental fee seems reasonable for storage in this location, and the security seemed good. There is 24 hour security and there are cameras everywhere. I do wish that I had 24 hour access (make sure you note the opening hours, currently 7am to 8 pm), but I understand that no after hours access means that anybody found there does not belong.

I rented this place to store some things while I was living outside of the UK, so I no longer have a UK address or bank account. That was really no problem with Shurgard, they only needed to see my passport and some proof of address documentation.

The staff at the office were helpful and friendly and they communicated very clearly and effectively. For instance, they tried calling when I couldn't answer (I was on a flight over the ocean) and so they tracked me down over email to make sure I got the message I needed.

Purchased a unit online, received the contract, invoice etc, drove all the way to the storage unit after hours, to be told I couldn’t get in because I didn’t have a PIN code. Called the out of hours team who were useless and said they only help people who are locked in. Sent an email to info.Shurgard.co.uk who apologised for the lack of contact or making me waste my time driving down there to be told I didn’t get in. Was offered £50 off my next invoice which was to be applied that same day. I have received the invoice today with the discount not applied. So I have to email them again.

I have been renting a unit here for 7 months and in that time my rate has increased twice.
The first time I was not even notified but looked like the insurance had gone up £4 per month. It did not really phase me as it was a small amount and just let it go but now when I think about it, the base value was £20p/m and an extra £4 is a 20% increase. Quite a hike considering I was not informed.
The second increase is about to be incurred where i'll be going from £472 p/m up to £557 p/m. This time I was notified and the reason for the increase was "to provide great service in a clean, convenient and professionally managed facility."
So it would appear that this additional service is going to cost me an extra 15%.
Bearing in mind that I have not even visited my unit in 6 months and the unit can be accessed remotely through an app 24/7 so you may never have the need to actually speak to anyone, it seems that I'm not paying enough for the estate to be kept clean and managed!
When I first moved into the unit, the manager was so keen for me to write a review that they wanted me to stop my move on the day to take time out to do it that minute. I never write reviews on the same day for this exact reason, I can never know what type of service they will offer until I've tested the waters.
I've now tested the waters and here is my review. I'll leave it you you to decide if the increases are justified and if you still want to take on a unit with this company.

I used Shurgard for the first time and found the staff particularly helpful. I need to single out Shan who was charming totally professional and helpful in taking me through the whole process. Also John, at the Watford branch went far beyond what may have been expected of him. Thank you Shurgard.

I needed storage but wanted somewhere nearby, I'd seen Shurgard in the area as it's local . I arranged to view the facilities and was met at the Reception by Mandy . Although really busy she was happy to show me an example of their storage suitable for my needs. She was also keen to make sure she could get me the best deal . I found her professional, knowlegeable, friendly and willing to go the extra mile . Hence the 5 stars.
