I hired Resume Pilots specifically because I wanted to effect a carefully-timed, slight career shift and hoped that an expert outside perspective would help make it a smooth transition. I believed the hospitality expertise that the company highlights would be a critical component to their ability to help make my case. I’ve not hired a resume writer in the past.

While the process helped me strengthen the presentation of some of my accomplishments and think about how to amp up my LinkedIn page, my assigned writer did not seem to know the hospitality industry and associated lingo. Despite the requested front-end paperwork, they put focus on career experience that wasn’t relevant to the target jobs I was asked to provide or career path we discussed. I ended up providing substantial redline edits in response. After a few couple of drafts, I wrapped the process before I felt the documents were as polished as they could be, because I was treating them more like a copy editor.

I started my job search putting trust in the product despite my misgivings and met swift and uniform rejection, which is unusual for me. Once I entirely rewrote the formulaic cover letter and made a few significant modifications to my resume, responses immediately changed for the better. I am now considering rewriting my documents entirely because my work experience still doesn’t seem to register in advance to interviewers.

I followed the process more than my gut told me to do, because I wanted to believe I was paying to work with people who knew the tips and tricks for applications, career changes, and translating my industry experience better than I. Not sure now.

If you are someone who struggles with presentations or writing, this is a great service for you. But if resume writing has been one of your strong suits in the past, you may be better off going it alone and forgoing the hefty fee and long process.

Matt spent additional sessions with me in helping to assess my current CV, distill new skills from my experience, expand upon existing milestones in more relatable ways, and helped me in building out a net new executive summary for my CV.

I originally had hesitations re: experience in the marketing industry and the fact that all employees are contractors and not FTEs. I think I was right and made a mistake choosing resume pilots.

The resume: it came out fine, but was highly focused on my previous positions and not on the newer role types I was looking for even after providing that feedback. Additionally I continually have issues with ATSs parsing the data correctly which is the most basic function I would expect. The writer did a decent job of synthesizing about 3 pages of notes into the resume.

The cover letter: I've used it once. It's essentially just a narrative resume and completely didn't address my ask if talking about why I'm looking to shift industries even with copious notes provided on that topic and a specific request from me. Overall ChatGPT could write one just as easily.

LinkedIn profile: by this point in the process I didn't provide much feedback. The LI profile update was just a regurgitation of my resume which I could have easily done myself. It didn't position my LinkedIn as an authority in any way or provide additional content recommendations. Pretty displeases with this services.

Overall, if you need a general resume rewrite my writer was fine but there are significantly less expensive options that do just as good of a job.
