I instructed this one-person employment…
I instructed this one-person employment law practice, working out of the North East of England, to assist me with a complex employment dispute. I paid £7,800 on 23 October 2024.
On 5 November, I received an email from the respondent’s solicitor raising the possibility of costs against me. I contacted the practice immediately to seek advice and was told the director was busy and would respond when available. This was within the cooling off period.
I spoke to him on 12 November, outside the cooling-off period but within 14 working days of payment. I was advised to continue “if I believed in my case”, but I was not provided with clear written advice or a defined legal strategy at that stage.
On 13 November, the director contacted me asking to speak to me.
On 14 November, following further contact, I was advised to settle. From my perspective, the change in advice over a short period was difficult to understand.
I felt let down by the service and the level of client care I experienced, and I felt the firm dropped their duty of care towards me.
Following a previous review, I received a response which I found concerning. These included comments to make reports of harassment against me, and mental health slurs.
Recommendation:
My recommendation would be to consider alternative providers for employment matters.

Client care - 5 star!
I have had a few lawyers work on my case and know a few personally too. However, I am yet to come across anyone that matches Lee Betchley's work ethic and service. His dedication and professionalism towards the case have been second to none. In this technology-driven world, Lee takes the time out of his busy schedule to call and discuss the email he has sent, or is about to send; informing one on every little detail that may/may not be discussed at the hearing. To say the least, he is and will be the go-to counsel for the family, if ever needed.
