It's disgusting
It's disgusting. It's just disgusting. Especially if you're a foreigner, no one cares about you (if you're from Ukraine, it's even worse). You pay for a direct train, and in the end you get 2 or more stops. The train is delayed, but you are forced to pay extra.

This is a HORRIBLE train service
This is a HORRIBLE train service. I went from Budapest to Munich (7 hour trip) and they overbooked it so heavily that there were countless people having to sit on the ground. My partner and I had to sit on the ground next to the toilet. Uncomfortable, messy and no working wifi. Unacceptable for an international long haul train ride. To make it worse we had to disembark in Salzburg due to an issue, and were not advised. Luckily we were directed to another service in Salzburg which again was overbooked, probably with 3 or 4 times more people than seats. DO NOT USE
We are a family of 5 and booked tickets…
We are a family of 5 and booked tickets with seats from Budapest to Vienna three days earlier. The day of our trip, our car/wagon wasn't there! We asked the conductor who didn't speak any English what we need to do and he spoke to us in Hungarian. Basically, they decided to put one less car on the train which meant we had to sit wherever. Every stop the train made, one, two or three of us had to change seats because other passengers had them reserved!
Not only had we paid extra to reserve our seats, we had to change around the entire trip as if we were thieves!! We should've been refunded at least the extra amount we had paid!
1st class nightmare
1st class - no wifi, AC can’t be switched off (its 14 celsius), impossible to sleep because the train is so unstable

No transparency at all. Not using the service often, but when i do they are always delaying a lot or even more.
Pros:
There are couple of new trains well maintained and clean. Prices are considered cheap compare to other European countries.
State owned railroad company
State owned railroad company, has monopoly of passanger trains in most part of Hungary. They usually pose as some kind of authoritites, the conductors are often rude, try to fine you, usually threatening you with the police. If you answer with the same rude and threatening manner they usually step down. Trains are infrastructure are old and broken down, "vis maior" situtions are abundant, which usually means total chaos, trains are late, sometimes wouldn't come at all, information is zero.
Train conductor blackmailed me
In January 2013 I was traveling from Budapest to Vienna with an European train ticket (Interrail). When I had to show my ticket to the train conductor I realized that I forgot to put the code of the train on my international ticket but I told the controller that I will write it in that second. The controller insisted to give him the ticket without the code and also he asked for my ID. He took my papers and blackmailed me to give him 50 euros to receive them back, otherwise he will take me out of the train and call the police just because I did not filled in my train ticket!! I had to pay him the 50EURO and he did not give me any receipt for the money. I never used MAV again!

hi there, i try to buy the tickets online yesterday, but i made a mistake a few time, now the schedule that i want is gone. i’m wondering if i buy the ticket that is available now, can i get on the earlier schedule on the same day? looks like no :(
