Great concept - even a small amount makes a big difference
I love the concept of this charity and plan to provide a further ‘loan’ (which I fully expect to be recycled ad infinitum). I particularly like how many women are being supported in their endeavours and will continue to support this charity rather than many of the huge charities who pay chief executives vast sums and who, if you make the mistake of paying by standing order, will use the money I’ve given them to ring me asking for an increase in my donation (resulting in it being cancelled altogether as that wasn’t how I expected my donations to be used!). Ground roots, local and practical help seems to me to be far more effective. I’m a big fan of this charity and love the idea that my money goes on working to improve lives long after I’ve forgotten I gave it!

The website gives the strong impression…
The website gives the strong impression that you are directly helping a specific person obtain a small loan to improve their business and living conditions. You see their photo, their story, a funding percentage and messages such as “will you help them reach their target?”
However, the actual financial arrangement is considerably different and, in my opinion, should be made much clearer before someone clicks “Lend”.
Your money is provided interest-free to a local microfinance partner. That institution lends to the entrepreneur and may charge them interest. Some loans may even have already been disbursed before lenders on Lendwithcare fund them, meaning your money can effectively reimburse the financial institution for capital it has already lent.
Most importantly, some partner institutions charge very substantial rates. Lendwithcare itself publishes representative APRs which, for certain partners, are around 40%. The individual providing the money through Lendwithcare receives no interest, while the local financial institution retains the interest paid by the borrower.
I have no problem with reasonable interest being charged to cover the genuine costs of administering microloans, particularly by non-profit organisations operating in difficult environments. But providing interest-free capital to a financial institution that can then charge a vulnerable borrower around 40% APR is very different from what I initially understood from the presentation of the website.
I’m not alleging fraud or that anything is being hidden illegally. The information can be found if you research the partner institutions, FAQs and terms. My criticism is that these are material facts that should be prominently displayed alongside each borrower before someone lends.
For example, every profile could clearly state:
• Which institution actually provides the loan
• The APR the borrower pays
• Whether the loan has already been disbursed
• That the lender receives 0% interest
• That interest paid by the borrower is retained by the microfinance institution
Those facts would allow people to make a genuinely informed decision.
The concept of helping entrepreneurs through reusable microloans is something I strongly support. But after understanding how the system actually works, I believe the front-end presentation makes the relationship between the lender, borrower and financial institution appear much more direct than it really is.
Transparency shouldn’t require digging through FAQs and partner pages.

Thank you for taking the time to look closely at how Lendwithcare works and for sharing such considered feedback. We understand your concerns, particularly around how clearly the relationship between lenders, entrepreneurs and our local development partners is explained.
As you correctly stated, we work with carefully selected local partners that provide loans and support directly to entrepreneurs in their communities. 100% of the amount you lend goes directly towards funding the entrepreneur you have chosen to support. However, in some cases, our local partner may provide the loan before the entrepreneur’s profile is fully funded on the Lendwithcare website. This means the entrepreneur can access the funds when they need them, without having to wait for their profile to be fully funded and for this funding to be transferred internationally. This is really important as loans can often be quite time-sensitive.
Indeed, some of our local partners, though not all, charge entrepreneurs interest or fees. This is because many of our partners cannot rely solely on other forms of funding to cover the costs of delivering their services so they can continue supporting entrepreneurs long-term.
In this context, it is also worth noting that although loans may be small, they can be very costly to deliver. Loan officers may need to travel considerable distances to reach entrepreneurs in remote locations, monitor loans, collect repayments and provide ongoing support. Many partners also offer further support to borrowers, including financial literacy and business skills training. We recognise that some of the representative APRs may feel high, particularly when compared with borrowing costs in the UK. Interest rates are shaped by several local factors, including inflation, infrastructure, loan size and length, and the level of support provided.
The welfare of the entrepreneurs our lenders choose to support is always our priority. We only work with organisations that have strong social missions and a commitment to alleviating poverty. Before accepting a partner, we assess its governance, finances, safeguarding, social purpose and lending practices. Partners must follow CARE International UK’s microfinance policies, and every new organisation completes a pilot phase before the partnership is expanded.
We also examine how partners prevent customers from becoming over-indebted and how they support anyone who falls behind with repayments. Entrepreneurs should understand how much they will receive, what they will repay and the total cost of their loan. Our partners provide regular information so that we can continue monitoring their lending practices and financial sustainability.
We take your point about making this information easier to find before someone lends. We are committed to transparency, although, as a small team, it can be challenging to provide detailed information and all the relevant context without overwhelming or making the lending process difficult to understand. However, we recognise that details such as the local partner, representative APR, and whether a loan has already been disbursed are important when making an informed decision. We appreciate your suggestions.

I recently joined and started lending. It seems a great project. Having read a little about the loans I’m disappointed that there is interest paid by the borrowers. I’m also confused by the repayment period! I’ve loaned to an animal and farming group with a 4 month repayment period. How are they going to grow crops and increase productivity in such a short period of time?

It is important to note that this is only to cover the cost of their work, which can be significant when serving communities who live in remote locations. The administration required on small loans does not differ from the admistration on large loans, so the higher volume of work can be challenging to manage without a system in place to cover costs. Unfortunately without knowing the details of your exact loan, it's hard to advise on what might be happening behind the scenes, but from experience running Lendwithcare for over 15 years, there is always an answer to every question. For example, many group members engage in multiple businesses, and that could be one of the reaons why they might be able to repay on a shorter time scale. Don't log in for a year and they steal all your cash. OK, it is no doubt buried in terms and conditions, but the money is gone.
They do contact by email, but with such a flurry of spam it is automatically filtered out by the email provider and you never see the warning.
Treat it as a donation, its not a loan

I much prefer microfinancing through Lendwithcare than donating to very large charities. I love that for the price of a takeaway, I can help someone to stand up on their own two feet, with dignity and pride. Some of the local partner interest rates are a bit steep, but overall, are still reasonable. Certainly, getting an unsecured loan in the UK would be much much higher. Plus the partners invest in training and helping the entrepreneurs. I don't have much, but I can afford to be an Angel and to have one less takeaway every few months, and support another entrepreneur instead.

I was introduced to lendwithcare by my partner. I haven't invested much and I add a little when I can. Yes there's been a little lost on repayments (due to exchange rate at the time). ,but it's been pennies really.
I fully enjoy lending to entrepreneurs who have a drive to do better, not only their lives but the community around them.
Micro loaning is an excellent idea. It means I can help in the little way that I can and with many others we can chip in and lend to these entrepreneur

When I first came across Lenwithcare, I though of the proverb, "Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime. " I have made a number of small loans and it is really rewarding when you get an email saying that a certain person or group have successfully paid back their loan, as this means they are now operating their business. I love that I can recycle my loans to use them for someone else, once repaid, and that I can make voluntary additional contributions to the running of the charity if I wish. There are so many loan sharks in developing countries that it is good to support ethical lending instead, as people try to better their lives without getting caught in a high interest trap. I hope to support this charity for a long time to come. You lend with a return of 0% interest, but 100% satisfaction that you are doing something worthwhile.

I don’t understand all these mentions of ‘Lending Partners’… what is a ‘Lending Partner’? I don’t want to give money to a ‘Lending Partner’ - I want to give it directly to a person trying to start a small, struggling, ethical business. There is no mention of these mysterious ‘Lending Partners’ on your glossy advertisement.

Lendwithcare is a wonderful idea
Lendwithcare is a wonderful idea. I don't have a lot of spare money but last year I managed to rake up £15. I first loaned this to a tailor in Pakistan and now it is with some farmers who want to install a solar powered pump which will allow them to water their crops regularly and increase the yields. When they pay the loan back, I'll lend the same £15 to someone else. It's wonderful that the same £15 can be used over and over again to improve the lives of people around the world.
