Overall a complete disappointment
I have been thinking a long time about this review because I did not want to be so negative. There are some things I learned, but the longer I reflected on it the more I felt disappointed and like I should let others know. First things first, I need to acknowledge that I was given some support - I was able to suspend the programme and restart it twice because of family emergencies which was decent of them - though in actual fact it didn’t actually take a huge effort on their part.
I enrolled in this program with very high hopes and motivation. It was a significant financial investment, but as the daughter of a teacher I was taught from an early age that the best investment you can make is in education. I should also specify that I have been the fortunate recipient of some of the best education that money can buy having degrees from some of the best universities in the world, so I think I can recognise a good teaching environment.
The structure of the course seemed reasonable, but the teaching - videos by the founder Inga - are confused and confusing. A lot of time on each video is spent watching her trying to switch language preferences or remember where to click to changes settings or get things done. This might be charming in an Instagram post, but for what is supposed to be a professional guide it is frustrating and time consuming. Especially given that most participants are single entrepreneurs who are already struggling against time constraints. Then a lot of the specifics don’t work if you try them yourself - like how to set up google preferences, or shopify stores etc. When I asked for help when something wasn’t working I was just told that the internet changes very fast and I would just have to figure it out myself.
While it is true that the internet changes fast - it turns out that the videos were more than 2 years old, and Inga had been working on a new course structure rather than updating any of the materials her students had already paid for. I don’t think this is acceptable for a course that is so expensive.
As a jewellery designer I also found that the course was very much geared towards clothing fashion brands.
The support from the coaches was minimal and again confusing and unhelpful. Maybe I am too tender a plant but I found the criticism harsh and demoralising and distinctly unsupportive. When I expressed this and explained in detail how I felt to the coaches …. Crickets. Clearly I had had my allotted 5 minutes of feedback and I wasn’t going to get more.
Last but not least, it is outrageous that at the end of your paid year you lose access to the “lessons”. As the videos are the only didactic material provided for the extremely high cost, I feel that students should at least be able to keep them as one might keep old textbooks for reference.
Some of the most useful things I learned I learned from other entrepreneurs sharing their experiences. There would be a real opportunity to create a community of small entrepreneurs who can support each other, but there is no effort to do that by the course - and the one attempt I made to connect entrepreneurs was met by resounding silence - definitely not support by the company. The only effort made by I am Fashion was to upsell me more courses. All in all a very disappointing experience and a waste of money which with hindsight I realise would have been much better spent buying in real professional support.
