Submitted an incorrect and unauthorised tax return ‘by mistake’ on my behalf causing a near £2K tax liability
After having seen some of the other recent reviews I can only assume they somehow manage to delete their negative trust pilot reviews. Sadly for me that was the only place I checked for reviews before using them.
It’s an awful service. They filed a tax return without my authorisation for a previous year, and filed it so badly I ended up nearly owing HMRC £1700, before managing to get it sorted out. The errors were completely on their side, as even though they had no authorisation to file for that year, they did anyway and they filed an incomplete form with completely incorrect income numbers, causing HMRC to recalculate tax owed.
When I got in touch with them about this, Gorilla tax rebated tried to tell me that they hadn’t filed anything for that year, which was a complete lie and there are many emails after they’ve said this admitting liability and that it was ‘accidentally’ filed.
They also then went on to tell me they’re tried to be in touch to sort it out, which was a couple of missed calls and a vague text - nothing at all about the actual issue (which they knew had happened despite denying it after the fact) and it was only when HMRC started sending me demand letters that I knew there was a problem. It was only after I made it very clear it was their fault and that HMRC had advised me to open a fraud case against them, that they decided they’d sort the problem out. I attempted to get in touch with the MD to escalate, who completely ignored me.
Having said that, it still isn’t completely sorted out.
After all of this, I didn’t ever receive the pension rebate owed to me.

We are sorry that you are dissatisfied with the service received. However, we feel it is important to clarify several points for the benefit of anyone reading this review.
We acknowledge that an administrative error occurred due to human error, and we have never disputed that this mistake should not have happened.
However, we would also like to clarify that our team identified the discrepancy approximately eight weeks before your formal complaint and made repeated attempts to contact you throughout this period. Unfortunately, these attempts went unanswered, which contributed to the delay in resolving the matter. We acknowledge that the purpose of our initial contact attempts could have been communicated more clearly.
Once contact was established, we worked directly with HMRC to correct the error and reconcile your tax position, with the matter resolved within just three days of receiving your complaint.
We strongly disagree with the suggestion that our error created the underlying tax liability referred to in your review. As explained in the detailed reconciliation provided to you, this liability had already been identified by HMRC independently of our involvement. Our administrative error affected how the liability was collected; it did not create the original underpayment.
We also dispute the suggestion that you received no benefit from your pension tax relief claim. The relief was successfully processed and applied by HMRC, and the financial benefit was reflected in your revised tax position.
Furthermore, in recognition of the inconvenience caused, we voluntarily waived our professional fees in full, without any request or prompting on your part, ensuring that you received the financial benefit of the work completed without incurring any charges from us.
Importantly, the overall financial outcome was more favourable to you than your original tax position, rather than the financial loss suggested in your review.
While we accept full responsibility for the administrative mistake, we believe it is equally important to acknowledge that we identified the issue, attempted to make contact well before your complaint, and took prompt action with HMRC to correct the position.
As a professional tax services provider, we are bound by client confidentiality and data protection obligations. We therefore cannot disclose further details of your personal tax affairs publicly, although a full explanation and financial reconciliation have already been provided to you directly.
We regret that your experience did not meet expectations. However, we do not believe your review provides a complete or entirely accurate representation of the circumstances, our efforts to resolve the issue, or the eventual financial outcome.
