Local rental company
Local rental company. This is the second time I've rented a car from them and I'm more than delighted. They are very attentive to the weather (Iceland is a country where driving can be dangerous from October onwards) and they know what they're talking about. The staff has always been available and friendly. Always a warm welcome. Check-in and check-out were very quick and easy. The car was perfect with incredible handling, and the prices are unbeatable. I'm so happy to have found this rental company and to have visited this magnificent country that I love with one of their cars. Thank you, Geysir, and I sincerely hope to see you again very soon.

Two warning lights were already on when we picked up the car — one for maintenance and another for tire pressure. We were told not to worry: the first one was “normal,” and the second was just a “display bug.”
Result: we ended up stuck for 24 hours because of a flat tire :)
A bit later, the windshield cracked for no apparent reason — no impact, no stone hit. They immediately claimed it was our fault, said it wasn’t covered by insurance, and charged us $1,500.
When we got back home, we showed pictures to a mechanic who confirmed it was most likely due to heat stress on an old or poor-quality windshield that had never been replaced.
I strongly advise against renting from Motorhome. The cars are in poor condition, the prices are high, and worst of all — they’re not honest.
Motorhome/Geysir — no need to reply, I’m just warning your future customers.

Pleasantly surprised!
We were pleasantly surprised with this car rental company. After having read the reviews, we were a bit uncomfortable with the booking we had already done. We arrived and were welcomed by a very kind and helpful young man. We received a free upgrade, and it was clearly stated where all the previous damages were. Still, we made pictures of the car and send in the damages that were not stated. I'd recommend to do the same, just in case. The car drove very well, and had all the comforts we could ask for. We cleaned the car thoroughly and returned it in good conditions, would also recommend. We didn't hear anything back from them. All in all, a great experience!

Review of Geysir Car Rental – A Complete Scam
1. We rented a compact hybrid Jeep from Geysir in Iceland. The car ran for only one hour.
2. We made a short 10-minute stop at Cairo Crater. When we tried to restart the car, it wouldn’t turn on at all. A message appeared saying “System Default.”
3. We called roadside assistance. They asked us to pay €100 just to open a case.
4. After paying the €100, they told us we had to pay an additional €500 for them to send help. They also made it clear that if we didn’t proceed with the extra payment, the €100 would not be refunded.
5. They initially said the tow truck would arrive in 25 minutes. Once we made the full payment, they changed the estimate to one hour.
6. In reality, the tow truck arrived after two hours. We were stuck in freezing temperatures in the middle of nowhere.
7. Because of this, we missed all our planned expeditions for the day.
8. To make things worse, they did not refund our car insurance at all.
This was one of the worst rental experiences we have ever had. It’s a complete scam. Avoid Geysir at all costs.

Failure to communicate the times of the shuttle that was supposed to take us to pick up the car. Some sensors on the overtaking control malfunctioned. The windshield washer did not work only with temperatures above zero, despite the known cold temperatures of the area, for several days it was not possible to wash the windows.

They rent cars with over 100,000 km on the odometer and without proper maintenance.
If you try calling them, they don’t answer. If necessary, it’s better to send an email, but be warned: emails reporting problems are ignored.
Document every issue thoroughly, because when you return the car, they will contest every report you make. They will rudely deny all responsibility (e.g., tire maintenance issues and unanswered calls).
Our experience in detail:
After landing late due to wind and snow, we arrived outside the airport at 5:50 PM but found no shuttle to take us to the rental location, despite their claim that shuttles run until 6:00 PM. After speaking with several bus drivers and taxi drivers, we had no alternative but to walk to the rental office.
Dragging our luggage through the snow and wind, we arrived after 6:00 PM to find no staff present. Thankfully, their self-check-in system (the only promised service that actually worked) allowed us to retrieve the car keys.
Upon starting the car, a warning appeared: "TIRE PRESSURE MONITOR SERVICE REQUIRED." Given the cold, wind, and the urgency of reaching our hotel, I verified that the tires were intact and drove off. At the first open gas station, I checked the tire pressure—it was lower than the manufacturer’s recommended levels.
(Note: Upon returning the car, the operator accused me of tampering with the tire pressure, claiming that even if the dashboard showed a tire issue, I should not have checked it!)
I expected the warning to disappear after correcting the tire pressure, but even after several kilometers, it persisted. The next day, the warning was still present. Using the car manual and Google Translate, I discovered that the message was due to lack of maintenance on the pressure sensors. I tried resetting the warning, which worked temporarily but reappeared after a few hours. To be safe, I continued checking the tires at every fuel stop.
On the 27th (a non-holiday), I attempted to contact the rental company for clarification. I called at 11:54 AM and 12:16 PM (the time in the photo reflects Italian time, which is one hour ahead), but no one answered. I then sent an email and received a response late in the afternoon.
In a second email, I reported the issues mentioned earlier, but I never received a reply to this follow-up message.
As for the reception during the car’s return, I’ve already described how unpleasant it was.
After reading other reviews, I found that at least one other customer reported receiving a car with dashboard warnings a few months ago.
While I acknowledge that choosing to drive the car despite its condition was my decision, delivering cars with unresolved maintenance warnings, ignoring emails reporting issues, and the disrespectful treatment at drop-off clearly demonstrate a lack of professionalism.
Problems can happen, but a good company knows how to handle them. This one does not. Avoid it at all costs.
Schlechtes Preis-Leistungs-Verhältnis
Wir haben ein Auto in Reykjavik gemietet. Die Abholung lief problemlos. Wir haben das Auto online eingecheckt. Da wir Verspätung mit dem Flug hatten konnten wir den Schlüssel selbstständig in einer Schlüsselbox abholen. Als wir losfuhren, sahen wir sofort dass die Motorlampe und die Service-Lampe leuchtete. Da wir nach Mitternacht anreisten und niemand mehr im Büro war, riefen wir die angeschlagene Notfallnummer an. Die Telefonnummer war nicht besetzt. Am nächsten Tag riefen wir nochmals an und es wurde uns mitgeteilt, dass die Problematik bekannt sei und es sich um einen Sensorfehler handle weil das Auto schon sehr alt sei. Laut Autovermietung sollten wir damit weiterfahren. Das Auto war zudem bei Abholung sehr dreckig von aussen und der Schaltknüppel war defekt. Zudem waren die Dichtungen der Türen nicht richtig dicht, es zog und war enorm laut beim Fahren.
Während des Aufenthaltes hatten wir keine weiteren Probleme mit dem Auto.
Für den eher hohen Preis den wir bezahlt haben (mit Vollkaskoversicherung) sind wir enttäuscht über die Leistung. Wenn das Auto etwas älter ist, ist das grundsätzlich nicht schlimm, jedoch erwarte ich von einer guten Autovermietung, dass das Auto vor Übergabe kontrolliert wird, der Service gemacht ist und keine Kontrolllampen leuchten. Wir kamen mitten in der Nacht an (wir teilten dies dem Büro frühzeitig mit) und waren verunsichert. Wir hofften zumindest auf direkte Unterstützung über die Notfalltelefonnummer welche jedoch auch nicht besetzt war. Wenn so ein Self-Check-In und Self-Pick-up Service angeboten wird, wäre ich zumindest froh über eine besetzte Notfallnummer.

KEEP AWAY FRAUD AND SCAMMERS. We hired a Mitsubishi Eclipse, a 2WD hybrid car, covered with a GOLD insurance and they did the following:
1) They charged us for a 4WD instead of a 2WD
2) The car wasn't hybrid because the battery was faulty so we had to spend a massive amount for fuel ⛽.
3) They gave us a very dirty and smelly baby seat 💺 which we had to do a deep cleaning before using it. When we asked for another, they offered a even dirtier which we refused.
4) They convinced us to get a gold insurance instead of the full cover (zero excess).
5) They charged us for two dents on the door approximately 1000 euros.
6) They charged us an excess for a 4WD car while we had a 2WD.
7) They did not provide evidence that they replaced or repaired the door with the two small dents.
8) They don't reply to emails where we requested a refund of some of the amount due to the reasons described above.

STAY AWAY! They aware supposed to give us an hybrid but the battery didn't work at all. They convinced us to get a golden insurance and then they charged us 821 pounds for two small dents on the door while we had the insurance and a 2WD car and not a 4WD.

Now they are not answering our emails.

Rented a Hyundai Tucson Hybrid for a week. It was a great car, ideal for Iceland's sometimes difficult roads.
Yes, there were dents, some damage and a chipped windscreen when we picked it up, but again, this is not surprising given the state of some of the roads.
This damage was all listed by the company in their e mailed report to me.
The trick is to carry out a thorough check of the vehicle yourself when you pick it up - I would recommend filming the vehicle.
That said, the staff were helpful and friendly.
This is the second year we have used them and will be back again.
Bad experience
Bad experience. Did not help us find the car in the parking lot. Pointed us in the wrong direction. After wandering around I went back into office and it was right outside the door. We noticed it had a cracked windshield- it was given to us that way. In hindsight we should have not taken the car. We were unfairly charged for damage we did not cause. I wonder if they routinely rent cars with damage in hopes that the renters will not notice. I would never rent from them again and plan to tell everyone I counsel on travels to Iceland to avoid this company.

La irresponsabilidad de estas dos empresas ayuda a condenar el Futuro de la Vida como la conocemos.

Bad renting experience ever
I picked up my car during the night whit self check in, for this reason it was not possible make any remarks, car had more than 240.000km, whit some sign of car accident, frontal light didn’t works, tires were completely wearned out and after 120km clutch pedal remain on the bottom point, clutch was broken, After five hours they arrive whit another car, it had 252.000km and frontal window broken, no gasoline tap and one tire completely different from the others, more wearned.
An experience i don’t want repeat.

I rented a Geysir car and at pick-up at Reykjavik airport, I had to change it because was in bad condition, it had the low tire pressure alarm light on too. I paid the difference to get a bigger car and also this one had the low tire pressure alarm on!!! I asked to fix it, but I was told that the tire was okay and no problem taking it. This was not true and the tire was defective at pick-up. In fact, after a few days, when I was hundreds of KMs away from Geysir offices, I had to inflate that tire several times for few days, until the tire went completely flat.
Geysir personnel misjudged the tire conditions assuming it was ok, even if I told them it was not, and then the tire went flat.
I had to call the 24/7 service and spend about 1000€ !!!! to change a defective tire, for which I’m not responsible.
I asked Geyisr for a refund explaining all the facts, but Geysir refunded me only the cost of the brand-new tire and refused to take responsibility for the tire repair costs of about 750€, without justifying the why.
In summary: I’ve done everything required by the contract detecting the defect and informing Geysir of that at pick-up. The problem was underestimated by Geysir personnel who insisted that the car was ok, and then I had to suffer the consequences of their misjudgement.
To be clear, mistakes can happen and if they misjudged the tire status it can happen. What is not acceptable is the Geysir management behaviour which does not recognise the mistake of their personnel in a very unprofessional way undermining Geysir credibility.

I've used a lot of car hire companies in different countries. Geysir has to be the best company I've ever used. They were very friendly and helpful, they didn't try and up sell me. They made the whole experience stress free and quick. If I return to Iceland I would use them again.
