Disappointed

In 2022, I had a new Generac 22KW installed at my home when I remodeled. From the start there have been problems. The transfer switch has burned up twice. Both times during hurricanes. As a result I had no power. Now, the solenoid has gone bad and as a result the generator backfired and blew out the filter and broke the filter box. All need to be replaced. Now, the parts to repair the generator are not available. They are supposedly on back order for at least 10 weeks. So my generator has been inoperable for more than a month and will be down at least another month and a half because of parts availability. Hurricane season is fast approaching. I may be without it during the time of year that I need it. I paid for a 10 year extended warranty. What good is it? That was money wasted. This is no way to run a business. If this generator continues to be so unreliable, I will be changing it out for another more reliable system made by another company. I will also be requesting a refund for this less than acceptable Generac generator that I have. Generac, your reputation is rapidly headed in the wrong direction.

Buy a different brand!

March 13,2026 we had a terrible wind storm come through and lost power, Saturday came and we still had no power and it was cold we decided to go buy a generator because we didn’t want to spend another night in a hotel after much debate we decided on the Generac GP 8000e, and of course it doesn’t come with the cord it needs so we had to go and buy an $80.00 cord, my husband worked about 3 hours hooking this thing up, he came in and said come look at this, when I went out this thing was pouring out gas, not just a drip but pouring out! All over the ground all over my husbands hand, we could not use this at all! Brand new generator that we couldn’t use! We had to go to a hotel again because of this piece of crap! We called customer service and they said Generac would “ possibly” pay for someone to pick it up to fix it and “ possibly” pay for our hotel! We have been put out enough, we are not loading a generator that leaks gas into our car to have someone look at it, this is a horrible way to do business, we want our money back for the hotel we absolutely had to have because this horrible product gave us no other choice, we want them to either refund our money and come and get this defective product, or they pay to have someone to pick it up. We already got in touch with a Generac dealer who said it would be $72.00 to pick it up, we are not spending another dime on this defective product, this is all on Generac. Buyer beware!

They are the worst company

They are the worst company! Customer support doesn’t help with anything. Will not help u find someone who can help. Will never suggest them to anyone. Terrible products say it’s under warranty and then don’t want to service the product. I have been fighting this company for over 5 years!

Great Generac Service from Blose Electric, Dayton, PA

I recently had a service performed by Blose Electric in Dayton, PA, on my Generac 20K Home Generator. The service was exceptional. The techs were knowledgeable and personable, and the price reasonable. I highly recommend Blose Electric for anyone in need of Generac services.

No customer service

Non existent customer service. Their idea of customer service is done old lady working from home who has ZERO product knowledge. I purchased 2 $1500 portable generators and returned both to the store after wasting half of my day with their so called customer service.
Don’t waste your time. Look for a generator company that will be there to support you when an urgent situation arises and you need your generator

Generac Support is Awkward

I've had a 24 KW generator since 2022. My biggest issue is obtaining support. Shortly after we put the unit into service, a power surge fried the control system; that happens, but the Generac recommended installer no longer supported the unit - and no one told me about it even though I had registered the unit. The website was not helpful finding a replacement, but I did. Forward to late 2023 - need for annual maintenance. Same problem - the replacement no longer supported my unit. I went to website. They say a provider will contact me. Nothing. I called; same story. This went on for almost two years. Finally, I went on my own and found a service provider - the website was never clear. NOW, I'm transferring my service to the new service provider and that took a lot more work than it needed.

Extremely disappointed in Generac

I purchased a brand-new Generac GP18000EFI on 9/17/25 to keep my household safe as a new widow, now managing everything on my own without my husband’s help. I chose Generac for reliability and support during emergencies. Instead, I received a generator that failed immediately and a warranty process that places the burden entirely on the customer.

Right out of the box, the GP18000EFI would not start. I had to contact customer support and perform a factory reset twice just to get it running. That level of troubleshooting should never be required for a brand-new generator.

Since purchase, every monthly exercise run has shown the same issue: the generator bogs down and runs erratically, raising serious concerns about whether it would function during an actual power outage—the only reason this equipment exists.

This has not been my first time contacting Generac customer support about these issues. Despite multiple attempts to get help, I have received no meaningful resolution.

Generac’s warranty handling has been unacceptable. Despite the unit being faulty from day one, I was told the warranty only applies if I transport the generator to a dealer myself. Generac will not cover a service call to my location. This generator weighs approximately 450 pounds, making that requirement unrealistic and potentially unsafe. Expecting customers to move equipment of this size in order to receive warranty service is unreasonable.

Customer service made the situation worse. During one of these calls, the agent offered no real solution and suggested I “use a make shift ramp and maybe get a running start” to load the generator because it has handles and wheels. That response was dismissive, unprofessional, and ignored basic safety concerns.

This review is being posted to document a pattern of poor quality control and inadequate customer support. I expect a response from Generac addressing how owners of the GP18000EFI—especially those with physical or situational limitations—are expected to safely access warranty service for a defective product. Until this is addressed, I cannot recommend Generac to anyone who needs dependable backup power and accountability after the sale.

I spent over $70K on solar and am Disappointed!!!

I spent over $70K on solar for my house, powered by Generac here in Hawaii and have had repeated issues. At times they do updates, which takes the system down regularly and I don't discover it's down, until I get my electric bill!!! Then it gets fixed either by me troubleshooting or them dialing in with a "fix". My latest issue was that the BMU is down taking half my solar batteries with it. The entire cabinet is not storing any energy! So I call my dealer and he says he's too busy with year end installs to even call Generac. I call Generac and they say to call around to other dealers for them to call Them (Generac) back... because the department I call is not the department the dealer calls and the two do not communicate with each other and nothing can be done for me till A Dealer calls them. Their system is really screwed up. Oh and here's the best part... it is going to take 4 - 6 weeks to get the replacement BMUs, then it needs to get to my dealer and then who knows how long before he'll install it. Great :(, I just bought an electric car and I wanted to charge it up off my house system!!! I guess I should have bought TESLA instead, the car is running terrific!!! All I have to say is I hope Generac gets their SHi..t together.

Purchased a whole home generator in August 2022, still not working

Purchased a whole home generator that was installed in August of 22, first hurricane that came through generator failed, 15 total hours used, 9 hours were weekly maintenance runs, 6 hours of power and generator failed. Generator failed in July 23, took until October 23 to get repair under warranty. Generator recently failed again FOR THE SAME REASON. The part Generac sent out to repair first failure was the same model/make part that failed the first time. It has failed again, I'm now 3+ years after paying for 'peace of mind with a whole house generator' and I don't have a generator.

NEVER BUY GENERAC PRODUCTS.

Purchased a solar system with inverter, panels and battery cabinet in August 2021. It has not functioned properly since it's been installed. I have a 25 year warranty which is totally useless. The electric company that generac is contracted with in my area, comes out and does a scope and determines what's wrong and that it would be a warranty covered repair. Generac denies it. It's been nothing but a headache. I have an active lawsuit with this company and open BBB complaint. Literally the worst experience of my life. Do anything but buy any generac product. I've been trying to get a single issue fixed for 7 months. According to the electrician they contracted and sent out, it's an easy fix but they are purposely denying it & trying to save money by not fixing issues. So it's blatantly intentional.

Generac Seris 5837 700O Watt

I purchased a Generac Seris 5837 7000 watt generator complete with a transer switch in August 2011. I had it installed by a competent person who wired it to run everything in the house except the AC unit. Through the 14 plus years it has been reliable to auto start and run 12 mins weekly under no load. Also it has never failed to auto start & operate during a power outage. I have done the required annual maintenance, replaced the starting battery 3 times, and replaced the starter solenoid once. I see several negitive reviews which I don't quite understand since my unit has been pretty much trouble free for all these years.

Warning - Don't Make My Generac Mistake

On July 31, 2025, I purchased a new Generac generator from Lowe’s in Houston, TX. The generator has never functioned properly since the date of installation. Despite multiple service visits by 2 different independent service companies authorized by Generac, the generator has not been repaired and remains non-operational since its purchase 2 months ago. One week after installation we incurred a power outage but still had no power with a brand new Generac in our yard. Meanwhile, we are making monthly payments for a generator that is completely useless.

The reason the generator didn’t work is because it was spewing oil as soon as it turned on so therefore, it could not be used or the engine would simply overheat and cause irreparable damage. There were several service trips where various seals and head gaskets were replaced. But upon the last attempt to fix the generator, it was discovered that the actual engine is cracked (I have video of the engine running with oil seeping out of the crack).

Throughout this process I did my best to allow Generac to exercise their standard restoration process, allowing for repeated repair visits although there was no apparent progress whatsoever.

After getting this issue escalated two levels, I communicated with someone (initials R.L.) in the Appeals & Grievances (A&G) department. But at this point (given the diagnosis of a defective engine on a brand new model, still under warranty), I made it clear that I was only interested in a complete replacement of the generator. But Ms. R.L. wanted to continue scheduling additional repair visits, apparently to no end. When I refused to go that route any further and inquired as to alternative solutions, she stated that my appeal would be reviewed and then a decision would be made. During one of those recorded phone conversations, Ms. R.L. stated to me that she did not know who would be involved in the decision, the factors they would consider, or the holistic list of options available but yet she knew that total replacement was not even up for consideration. How could she know so little about the review process, yet know definitive outcomes?

After about 2 months of dealing with a non-function ing generator, I still wanted to give Generac a fair chance to make this situation right. So I mailed a certified letter to Generac Headquarters letting them know that I would give them an additional 14 days to bring forth an equitable resolution to this matter. The letter stated that after the 14 days had expired, I would be escalating this issue beyond that of their process and that is why I am sending a warning to the public, particularly to those who are considering making such a large investment in something that could possibly be life-saving if a home owner has medical needs that require power in times of inclimate weather where traveling to a hospital is not an option. For what it’s worth, I also sent a certified letter to Lowe’s Headquarters requesting the same resolution. I have yet to hear back from Lowe’s.

Even though several Generac customers may come forth to exclaim the wonderful service they have received from their generator, my point is simply that this has not the experience that I have had. And despite the first-hand recommendations that I received to make this purchase, it is obviously not the experience of many others as consumer review websites show a 1.7 star rating for Generac. Just remember that there are other options out there. I don’t want anyone else to have the experience that I continue to fight. I would not recommend Generac to anyone, this has and continues to be a nightmare.

I have pictures showing 1) the generator on the day it was installed with oil spilled all over its surface, 2) the apparent engine crack with oil leaking from it, and 3) it’s current condition - disassembled in my yard and completely useless.

It seems that Generac Whole housGenerac WiFi Modulese…

Do NOT buy a Generac Gwhole house for features, WiFi remote monitoring,, It does not wotk for any length of time.

It seems that Generac Whole house Generators that have WiFi capabilities is a joke.. They just hobbled this feature together to use as a sales tool. The WiFi modules do not last long. I have had 2 replaced in the last 2 years ,

PS.. Generac did away with the WiFi module and going back to cell 4G device which will come with a monthy fee.

there SHOULD be t class action lawsuit specifically for defective Generac generator Wi-Fi modules,

Don't trust the green light

When the green light is on, the generator should work. Well, it didn't on August 16 when we lost power. It kept cycling on and off. It turns out that the battery was weak. The issue is the green light never went red to warn us of this weak battery. If we had seen a red light, we would have acted to get the generator fixed to prevent the failure we experienced. We can no longer trust that the green light is anything other than a green light -- it means nothing! Bottom line is that we have paid a ton of money for a piece of junk that takes up a big space on our property. What's the point of having a stand by generator that doesn't work when it's needed?

Worst company ever

Worst company ever, I bought over 80K cash in Pwrcell equipment with standby generator in Dec of 2022. Still does not work in 2025, never has worked and they just keep sending people out here to do nothing. I was part of the BETA test program and assured by Generac I would be upgraded if anything needs it to ensure the system would work. I live in SW FL and so far during every power outage this thing just fails and the inverter trips and fails. Major run around, never buy this Pwrcell junk, just get a regular generator and skip the green energy nonsense. Try Briggs and Stratton, better equipment and better warranty.

Update: On October 1, 2025, we finally got new batteries that are supposed to work. Unfortunately, Generac didn’t bother to replace the faulty BMU, so the system still doesn’t work. It’s junk.

Do not buy a Generac solar system. It’s junk. We live in Hawaii and have had a Generac solar system for the past 5 years. It has malfunctioned 10 times. Each time, it takes a month or more for parts, and the only company that services it doesn’t want to do it anymore. Generac used to be based in Wisconsin and had a 24 hour help line we could call to reset the system EVERY DAY while we waited for parts. They have now moved to Canada, 6 hours ahead of us. The system isn’t discharging at night. Since they are so far ahead of us timewise, now we can’t get it reset when we need it. It’s been over a month since we were told a part was sent. We are really frustrated and don’t know what to do at this point.

Have a transfer wire warning

Have a transfer wire warning, just get the run around from Generac. The closet tech is 60 miles away, and will not come out because Generac does not pay them enough for their time. I live in a rural area hence the reason for the generator. Will use someone else next time

The purchase was a poor decision

We purchased from a local dealer. The unit we received was installed by the dealers representative. It didn't work, not even for a minute and made a horrible noise. We sent it back and asked for a replacement or our money back.
The unit was sent for repair, a local tech repaired it, not in the factory or anywhere with a quality system. Now they tell us we must take the repaired one. We asked for a one year warranty instead of 6 months (a warranty readily available from other suppliers) because we want extra protection against the potentially unreliable repair. This request was turned down. The equipment is poor and the service/backup is horrible

I had my whole house Generac installed…

I had my whole house Generac installed by Lee Legler Construction and Electric on 4/28/25. They were so polite and did an amazing job of installing my generator. I am extremely happy with the work they did and can rest now knowing I'm covered if there is a power outage. This company was highly recommended to me and I can see why! They're the best!
