We banked cord blood for our son 19 years ago. We first tried cancelling last year, after paying these fees (that go up and up!) for nearly 2 decades. There is no “cancel” option on their website so I emailed. They refused to cancel and instead engaged in high pressure sales techniques, demanding I explain why I wanted cord blood services 18 years prior. After considerable back and forth and phone calls, they proposed to extend my cord banking for a year without fee, undoubtedly in a hope I would forget.

I went back this year and attempted to cancel. Same BS tactics. They tell me I can’t cancel via email, I have to call. So I call and get put on endless hold and then more sales pitches. When I insist I’m told I can’t cancel on the phone, I have to fill out paperwork to cancel and send them via mail. When I tell them they’d better not charge my credit card, they tell me if I don’t submit the paper forms for closure they will continue billing me and will send me to collections. Oh, and my now young adult kid has to sign the forms also.

They take their sweet time sending these forms which turn out to change the contract language from the original storage agreement and either A- you have to donate your child’s stem cells to them to do with as they wish or B- you have to pay them $200 to throw the cells in the trash.

These people are predators. Save yourself the trouble and don’t work with them.

I banked my two children's cord blood in 2001 and 2003. In 2024, we made the decision to end the cord blood banking for a variety of reasons that ranged with concerns about the viability of the samples from those early days, and also the expense. When you try to cancel your cord blood banking CBR makes it VERY DIFFICULT. Once you identify the purpose of your call, you are immediately put on a minimum 20 minute hold to speak to a specialist who can cancel your subscription. Once you finally get through, the specialist will not immediately cancel the accounts. She will pepper you with questions about your reasoning for ending the account and continue a very HARD SELL campaign to keep you from ending the subscription (AFTER 20 YEARS!!!). Finally, the specialist offers a free year of storage to "think about it." The following year I emailed them to cancel the accounts. I specified that I did not want to speak to anyone, to just please cancel the accounts. However, they would not just email me the paperwork to close out the accounts. They insisted that I call them first - for no apparent reason - as the paperwork requires no more than signatures and dates and checking a box about how you want the sample handled - nothing that any adult can't understand by reading the document. But CBR requires that you call them to get the paperwork sent which means you will spend another 20 minutes on the phone waiting to speak to them (only sales get fast service, not cancelations) and then you will have to go through the "specialist" once again who will work to convince you not to cancel. I think after 20+ years, CBR could just let you cancel without this ridiculous runaround. Most of us work during the day and don't have time for these games. BUYER BEWARE.

Please save yourself the headache.

My experience with this company was that communication was excellent when I signed up. Unfortunately, when I decided to close my account, the experience was completely different.

I was later informed that an account closure required a specific form, but that was not made clear at the outset. Despite communicating my request to close the account in writing multiple times, my account remained open because I never received the required form to complete. I searched all of my email folders and never found it.

What was most frustrating was that my account continued to be billed while I was actively trying to close it and repeatedly requesting the documentation needed to do so.

I understand that businesses need to generate revenue, but customers should not have to struggle to cancel an account after clearly communicating their intent to do so. In my opinion, the cancellation process should be straightforward, transparent, and supported by timely communication.

Based on my experience, I would recommend considering other organizations that make the account closure process simpler and more customer-friendly.

We banked our son’s stem cells 20 years ago when he was born. He was diagnosed with moderate to severe UC which stem cells treatment is a recognized treatment for this condition. I have called 4 times over two months, asked for supervisors and still get absolutely no response from them about withdrawal for use. After 20 years of paying them, I can’t ever get anyone to cell me back.

I have been attempting to cancel my account since October 2025 with no success. Despite multiple email requests — all of which have gone unanswered — the company has kept my account active and has now sent it to collections. My cancellation request was submitted well in advance of the payment due date, making this outcome completely unacceptable. I would not recommend doing business with a company that ignores customer communications and fails to honor cancellation requests.

They make it as difficult as possible to cancel a subscription. Requiring approval for cancellation by the baby AND mother to cancel. Unfortunately the only way you can get around this requirement is if one of them has passed away, then you must relive an awful event. Even after that, if you fill out the form and mail it to the address listed on the form, per the instructions, they continue to send you harassing email and voicemail.

CBR Cord Blood refuses to let us close our account unless we sign a “closure agreement” filled with unfair, one-sided terms. These include fabricated balances, demands to relinquish our rights over the stored samples, and clauses that replace the original disposition instructions from the sign-up contract; all while protecting CBR from any responsibility. If you attempt to modify any part of the agreement, they refuse to cancel the account.

We’ve sent multiple formal cancellation requests, but instead of honoring them, CBR continues adding charges and escalating threats about sending the account to collections.
