For all your professional and trade union support join the BDA.
I have been a member of the BDA since student days. During that time I have had professional support and advice when needed. There has always been a Section or Branch meeting to attend wherever I have lived and that has been fantastic, both socially and educationally.
We need the BDA to support us professionally and as trade union - I have no hesitation in saying "join today"!

Generally good
Generally good, but it’s a a shame that undergraduate dental students aren’t able to use the BDA library postal loan scheme (hence the 4 star rating).

We would love to offer the postal loan service to students, but as books are so expensive, it would mean we would have to significantly increase the price of student membership. We try to keep our student fees as low as possible (only £2.34 a month) and choose to focus on expanding our eLibrary for students instead.

It is fabulous to be part of the BDA as a student. The BDA offers so much however I think the most beneficial aspect is the library. In dental school, I think it would be good if more students were aware of what the BDA is and the advantages of being a member.

Recommend joining as a student
I would definitely recommend joining the BDA as a student. As well as getting access to the BDJ both online and hard copies, you get money off some great events throughout the year such as BDSA sports day.

BDA Review - Dental Student - Ameen Daywood
I really appreciate that the BDA works tirelessly to protect the profession of Dentistry, negotiating on behalf of us as our dental trade union.
It's great to that the BDA releases useful journals that we can make use of such as the student-BDJ, which I read regularly. It helps to give me an insight into topics that may not necessarily be covered within the curriculum of dental schools.
Another benefit is the support available to us students on the BDA website through eBooks, eJournals etc, which I know many students including myself have utilised.
I haven't made use of the next feature but can definitely see myself doing so in the future, which is the loupes insurance. When I decide on purchasing an expensive pair of loupes this is something I'll consider.
Lastly, BDSA sports days and conferences - these are always great events and a highlight for many dental students around the UK. It's a great opportunity to network and meet people you wouldn't come into contact with otherwise. They're also great fun!

I find being a BDA member very useful…
I find being a BDA member very useful to keep up to date with issues relevant to dentistry, as well as dental student related subjects. An example includes the changes in dental foundation training application. I find the BDJ journals very informative and interesting - a twice monthly perk of being a member. Also its great to get discounts on annual events arranged by both the BDA and BDSA (e.g. BDSA annual conference).
As a student it is very good value for money and I would consider continuing my membership into foundation training.
The BDA plays an important role in supporting all members of the dental profession (e.g. ensuring foundation dentist salary wasn't reduced when challenged) and I want to help continue with that support with my membership.

We were delighted when we succeeded in reversing a proposed £2,000 cut in foundation dentist salaries, as this means graduates now receive a significantly higher pay packet each year.

I find the BDA library the most useful…
I find the BDA library the most useful of my membership. Being a dental student it’s handy to have fast access to several books.
I also really enjoy reading the BDA magazine which I have sent as I enjoy being kept up to date with recent studies.

Thanks for your feedback. We will take on board your comments as they help us to shape the future of the organisation.
I’m sorry to hear that you don’t feel we stand up to the GDC as we have ploughed a great deal of resource into fighting them. In 2014, the GDC tried to increase it’s fees by 64% to a proposed £945. We vehemently challenged them at the High Court and were pleased when the court ruled that they had acted unlawfully. Despite winning the case, we were disappointed that the court then gave the GDC permission to raise fees to £890. This is because they felt it wasn’t in the public interest to block the fee increase.
These high fees are still in place and have been used to top-up GDC reserves to a level that the profession have deemed completely inappropriate. We believe registrants should not have to pay the price for mismanagement at their regulator and continue to campaign for change. In terms of our membership fees, we are a not-for-profit organisation. This means any profits are ploughed directly back into providing members services. We run a tight ship and our membership fees represent the real cost of providing benefits and services to our 18,000 members.
It's also worth remembering that our membership fees are tax deductible, so cost less than you may think.
